My partner and I were married at the Highlands Inn on September 24, 2011. This hideaway in the New Hampshire woods at the edge of the White Mountains is a truly special place. The land is quiet, well-kept, and steeped in all the magic that only a New England town on the edge of a mountain range can bring. The Innkeeper, Grace, has owned the Highlands for over 25 years and has turned it into an oasis for women. Her concert series, one of which we experienced on the night of our wedding, is known throughout the area for its high quality and diversity of performers. I loved being able to get married at 5pm, have a fantastic dinner in a nearby town, and return at 8pm for a lovely acoustic concert with a local musician from Massachusetts.

Our room was comfortable and cozy, with private bath, overlooking the spectacular backyard of the Inn. Breakfast is served every morning in the dining area just off the living room and offers fresh juices, coffee, pastries and cereal in addition to a hot item which changes daily. The food was fresh and tasty and during non-meal times, there is always juice, tea and water available for guests. We stayed for three days and the meals served at the Inn never disappointed.

The hot tub room is a special addition to this quiet and serene place. Reserved by the hour, it was the perfect place to relax post-wedding with our friends. After a hike at nearby Franconia State Park, coming back to the Inn and luxurious hot tub was a perfect compliment to our day.

Perhaps the most unique thing about the Highlands is its women-only focus. Male guests are only allowed during weddings and group gatherings, preserving one of the only women-only Inns left in the United States. The combination of female camraderie, amazing landscape and the laid-back feeling that New England towns can bring make the Highlands a place that my wife and I will return to again. We are hoping to return in the wintertime for hiking, cross-country skiing and the enjoyment of a New England Christmas.

Room Tip: The rooms are smallish - the Inn sleeps over 40 guests. Ask the Innkeeper for the largest room available if space is something you cherish.

Every year we go to the Highlands Inn for some part of the Thanksgiving holiday. The friendliness and warmth of this lesbian inn is legendary, from the turkey dinner to the Friday leftovers to the delicious and leisurely breakfasts and wonderful company - a favorite place to stay.

We had our wedding and honeymoon at the inn and it was beyond perfect! The inn is beautiful and relaxing. Our room was very nice. We stayed in the main inn and our room was a queen with fireplace. The bed was very comfortable and the furnishings were lovely. The shower was small, but I know they have rooms with larger showers/baths. The fireplace had a remote control so you didn't even have to get out of bed to light it! ha! The grounds are breathtaking, especially during the fall when we we were visiting. Grace, the innkeeper, happened to be out of town when we were visiting but Jackie treated us just like family. She really made our trip remarkable!! There was a concert the weekend we were there. The setting was intimate and the talent was amazing. The breakfasts were some of the best we have had. Everyday was something different and Jackie is an amazing chef! Hot coffee was available all day, which was nice! In a nut shell - our stay at The Highlands Inn was the best time of our lives and our wedding day couldn't have been more beautiful. Thank you to Jackie, Grace and The Highlands Inn :)

My partner and I went on a weekend trip for the leaf peeping and just to enjoy a peaceful colorful countryside. Wish I could have spent more time. The Inn is very friendly. We stayed in the farm house since we had our 2 Corgies with us. There were other couples with dogs in two other rooms but it all were behaved so no undue barking even through we were bringing in 2 dogs. We enjoyed the live music at the main Inn. We really relaxed in the indoor hot tub. Peaceful night sleep, The dogs even slept well and were not restless. Yummy breakfast and nice chat. The room was clean and fresh, bathroom was roomy even through it was the second floor. Bed is a bit harder than I have at home. If we had more time we could have hiked the grounds. I would stay there again. The only bit of advice is to get dinner reservations, we had a hard time finding a place to eat that had a table available. The Inn has notebooks with menus and list of places that offer discounts too. Great place.

Room Tip: The rooms at the farm house are in a build away from the Inn and take dogs. If you don't travel with your dog, the staying at the Inn would be closer to pool, spa and reference stuff. I would like to try staying there.

Our three days at the Highlands Inn were wonderful! My partner and I were blown away by the incredible natural beauty of the area. Franconia Notch State Park is only 10 minutes away, and even non-athletes will find plenty of walks with gorgeous views that are easy to access. We especially loved the Flume and the Basin, as well as Kinsman Falls. The Inn was a perfect base, close to everything, welcoming, comfortable and romantic. It has a great history, ask Gracie for the story. We loved the hot tub, and also enjoyed the Saturday night singer-songwriters concert. It is always fun to meet other women couples, and we love the comfort of knowing we are among friends.
