“great stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2012

I stayed as part of an activity weekend and can't wait to go back. Fantastic food and even though it's a "family" atmosphere, it was not over run with children. Staff is great. Guided hikes are well worth it. Only complaint is that if you are in a room with a connecting door, you can hear your neighbors word for word. Next time I'll ask for a room without the connecting door. Otherwise, I look forward to returning.

Wow - this really is hotel-style camping . . . not to mention even a great day stop for their education center and learning more about the area. And, with a conference center on site, it can make a great destination for a small business retreat, which was why I was there.
The food was better than some restaurants - hot spicy soup and hearty sandwich selection was superb. The rooms also surpass many regional hotels -- and the emphasis (and building design) is "green" and lovely. Curl up with a book in an oversized armchair next to the fire, and gaze out at the mountains from the convenient location tucked into Crawford Notch . . . the only thing off-putting were the eco-conscious restrooms ( there was a moment of disconnect between the modern gleam of the restroom and what looked like an outhouse 'seat,' a lot lower than usual). Well worth a visit - but plan ahead as understandably busy during prime hiking/visitor seasons.

AMC L, General Manager at Highland Center Lodge at Crawford Notch, responded to this review, 16 November 2012
Thank you for posting a great review for AMC's Highland Center! We appreciate the time you've taken to offer your feedback, as we value input from all of our guests. The Highland Center is indeed a "green" building, as we strive to minimize our ecological impact at all of our destinations. With regard to the low toilets, you may have been referring to the bathrooms in Thayer Hall, the red building adjacent to the Highland Center that we use for conferences and other meetings. In Thayer Hall, as one of our "green" features, we have composting toilets. These are modern, dry toilets that use aerobic processing systems to break down waste. We've had great success with these and are happy to reduce our water and energy usage wherever feasible. We do have traditional flush toilets in the main lodge and private guest rooms. We hope to see you back at the Highland Center or another AMC destination soon!

Having sheets on the bed, fresh towels, someone else doing the cooking and a hot shower after a day of hiking is unheard of. AMC also provides very interesting evening programs and also has 4 electronic guided tours from the lodge. A small supply store for items you may need to purchase. They also have a gear room where you can borrow supplies while staying at the lodge. This "green built lodge" is a master piece.

Room Tip: There are both stairs and an elevator to all floors. All rooms are equal with views to the surround...

This AMC lodge is one of their newest & most posh, with great spaces to lounge & learn. It is conveniently located activities at Franconia Ridge, Cannon or Loon mountains. We stayed in a private room with private bath. It was pricy ($103 pp if AMC members) but worth the money. Included in this price is a complete dinner (with vegetarian options) served by their cheerful staff, full hot & cold breakfast, nature talks. We also had a open bar reception that night to meet other people. Unlike other AMC lodges & huts where you can bring your own wine & beer to drink with your dinner, here you have to purchase their liquor. That said, they do have a good & varied selection to choose from.
This is also a great place to plan your hikes from. Their knowledgable staff will help you choose the routes, get the appropriate map, make sure you have all the right gear - which you can borrow from their LL Bean gear room or purchase at their store. It's really perfect for families. They have a playground that simulates hiking situations (how to cross a bridge, etc.); campground fire-building instruction with camp fire songs - really so much to do there & get re-charged before you venture out to the huts or the trails.

Room Tip: For couples, I would splurge & get the private room with private bath. Our room on the third flo...

We stayed in a private room with bath on the 3rd floor of the lodge. Our window had a view north where we could see the Bretton Woods Resort. The room was extremely pleasant, with all new, hardwood (oak?) furniture, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable platform bed with cozy comforter. The rate ($90/person with AMC membership) includes an all you can eat buffet dinner and breakfast. The lodge has a small hiker supply store in case you forgot any essentials. Has library and reading rooms on each floor, with comfortable sofas. Delightful place.

Room Tip: Upper floor private room with bath.

If you want to explore the White Mountains, have kids but don't want the hassles that camping brings (i.e., tents, cooking, bugs), this is the right place. The friendly AMC staff who work here really make people feel welcome and it is also a great way to meet other like-minded, outdoors-oriented people.

My friend and I stayed at the Highland center August 10th..the night before setting out for a hike to the summit of Mt. Washington. Unfortunately we were unable to take advantage of the great outdoor setup because of torrential rain that fell all evening. We had a private bunkroom (2 bunks). The beds were comfortable, the room was clean and spacious enough for us and our hiking gear and the section we were in was very quiet. The shared bathroom was very clean. Dinner on Friday night consisted of an all you can eat buffet. The food was tasty and hot and there was plenty of it. We had several inquiries regarding shuttle schedules and the best trails to hike to the summit given the forecast. The staff was very curteous and more than helpful. Breakfast the next morning was hot, tasty and once again there was plenty of food! The location of the Highland center is fantastic if you are a hiker or want to do some cycling in the area. I can't comment on activities because we only stayed for one evening. You might think that the Highland Center is a bit pricey. However, when you consider the comfort, location and meals, it really isn't much more expensive than a motel. I agree with the comments made by Hiking Yaking, it's worth getting an AMC membership to take advantage of the discounts.

Room Tip: We had a private bunk room (two bunks) with a shared bathroom. We were located on the third floor...
