The Highland Center, operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, is a lodge that offers meals, outdoor activities including guided nature walks, bunk rooms and private rooms. The accommodations are somewhat spartan, but provide everything you need after a day of hiking. The Center also has a gear room provided by LL Bean where guests can borrow everything from a backpack to hiking boots. There is an amazing amount of stuff down there. You could come completely unprepared to hike and gear up down there. Then buy your snacks at the small store at the front desk and you are ready to go.
Another cool thing: astronomy interns who give talks and let you use their telescopes on clear nights. The guides, for nature walks and hikes (free and open to the public) are very knowledgeable and kind.
This is a great place for kids. Don't miss the ping pong table in the basement or the all-natural climber outside.

Room Tip: If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, the bunk rooms in the lodge or in the Shapleigh House are the best deal.

Another rainy weekend in the mountains, and it was awesome to be able to borrow LL Bean gear for free at the AMC Highland Center. Hiking boots and rain pants for everyone, including my 3 year old and 7 year old. The food is only fair (but plentiful), and the lodgings are sparse and rooms small, but more than adequate. The facility is really nice though. Doors are thin and you can hear lots of activity in the halls at night.

Years ago I stayed in the AMC huts but now prefer some creature comforts. I wasn't familiar with the Lodge at Crawford Notch and was pleasantly surprised to have an option of a very comfortable room with private bath. Fee includes buffet style breakfast and dinner, which were excellent. Usual traditional breakfast offerings and an excellent choice of fresh fruits and yogurt. Always a vegetarian option at dinner and one night the main entree option was beef and the second night it was chicken. Nice choice of salad options and vegetable sides. You can purchase wine by the glass also. Coffee and tea included (throughout the day and evening). Excellent location (about 3 miles from the Omni Mount Washington Hotel) with a lakeside trail option right off the parking lot. Other trails also close by. I booked as part of a group but would consider returning as a couple--enjoyed my stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the notch and river.

The Highland Center is a wonderful facility located near Bretton Woods ski area, the Appalachian Trail, and in the middle of NH's mountains. Run by the AMC, the people are friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms are large with private bathrooms (some) or you can select the bunk option. Unlike Pinkham Notch, the center has a liquor license so you have to buy their beer and wine rather than bring your own. Like PInkham, the center offers buffet style dinner and breakfast. I understand that people don't want to dine "family style" so much any more, but something that made the AMC special has been lost. The buffet quality is not as good as you would get at the standard business hotel, e.g. Fairfield, LaQuinta, etc. Breakfast was trays of scamble eggs, pancakes or french toast. The syrup was cold and unappealing. Dinner was a tray of ham, rice, polenta, etc. You get the idea. Too bad. Book your stay and try to avoid the dinner package at least. Go down the road for dinner.

Room Tip: Unless you need it, I would avoid the handicapped accessible room.

We stayed there for a Road Scholars program during the last week of February 2014 and it was wonderful! Our room was a private with a queen bed and a private bath. The view from Room 303 was of Mount Washington Hotel surrounded by the mountains. Bedding was flannel sheets from L.L. Bean. Bathroom area had a large counter top, and the shower stall has a built-in seat, similar to handicapped accessible stalls. Nights were quiet; we never heard noise. Large and small public spaces highlight the views of the mountains through the windows. The family style food is healthful and delicious. Great cross-country skiing down at Bretton Woods Nordic Center, which is about 4 miles away, and at Great Glen Trails, which is a 45 minute drive. Beautiful winter hiking using crampons in the surrounding trails.
