Simple bedroom furnishings, that's what grabbed our attention, when searching for somewhere to stay in or near Franconia. The pictures on TripAdvisor showed the Horse and Hound to be tastefully but simply furnished, with narry a swagged curtain or swirl patterned carpet in sight, and that suited us Brits down to the ground. And so it was. The Inn is a delightful renovation of the 1940's lodge it once was, the furnishings generally simple (the sitting room being the exception, with a nice eclectic mix of sofas and chairs and tables making it all very cosy with lots of books and magazines to read, and plenty of places to read them - oh, and a neat area for residents to make themselves an early cup of tea or late night coffee), and the gardens very pleasant to sit out in on a summers evening. While our room (No 1) wasn't big, it was big enough for the 4 nights we stayed, and very comfortable in a Shakeresque style. The evening meals were tasty and well prepared and presented (mains like scallops, chicken or pork) and served by friendly waitresses. The wines were good and sensibly priced too.
Oh, and the White Mountains are a great place to walk (or "hike" as our hosts would say). In June the mountain sides are many shades of green and the paths (trails) run up through them along side tumbling streams, cascading over rock sheets and waterfalls. Beautiful.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- THE RETURN OF A CLASSIC. The Horse and Hound, located in the rugged White Mountains of New Hampshire, first opened in 1946 as a tasteful inn, tavern and restaurant. With three fireplaces and knotty pine paneling throughout, the inn welcomed everyone from Hollywood stars to local outdoor enthusiasts and quickly established a reputation for great food, elegant lodging and warm hospitality. Now celebrating its 65th anniversary, the Horse and Hound was closed from December 2010 through June 2011 while undergoing a comprehensive restoration to its classic lodge style. Now completed, the cheerful tavern, gracious dining room, elegant lobby, handsome library/lounge, and nine restful guest rooms once again invite you to unwind and relax after an active day in the Great Outdoors. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to welcoming you back. FOOD, SPORT & STEWARDSHIP OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS. ... more less
