Simple bedroom furnishings, that's what grabbed our attention, when searching for somewhere to stay in or near Franconia. The pictures on TripAdvisor showed the Horse and Hound to be tastefully but simply furnished, with narry a swagged curtain or swirl patterned carpet in sight, and that suited us Brits down to the ground. And so it was. The Inn is a delightful renovation of the 1940's lodge it once was, the furnishings generally simple (the sitting room being the exception, with a nice eclectic mix of sofas and chairs and tables making it all very cosy with lots of books and magazines to read, and plenty of places to read them - oh, and a neat area for residents to make themselves an early cup of tea or late night coffee), and the gardens very pleasant to sit out in on a summers evening. While our room (No 1) wasn't big, it was big enough for the 4 nights we stayed, and very comfortable in a Shakeresque style. The evening meals were tasty and well prepared and presented (mains like scallops, chicken or pork) and served by friendly waitresses. The wines were good and sensibly priced too.

Oh, and the White Mountains are a great place to walk (or "hike" as our hosts would say). In June the mountain sides are many shades of green and the paths (trails) run up through them along side tumbling streams, cascading over rock sheets and waterfalls. Beautiful.

Room Tip: Room 3 seemed to be the biggest. Our room, Room 1 was dual aspect, but at the top of the stairs, whi...

After reading of the Inn's renovation, we headed up for a ski weekend to check it out. All changes were extremely positive. The staff was great, the entire place is immaculate, the rooms, although spartan, are very nice with new furniture. The best? The dining room. We had a superb dinner one evening, quite a change from the "diner food" served years ago before the changes. Overall, a very good experience on all fronts, and very convenient to Cannon Mountain. Although I don't need a phone or TV in the room (there are none), it would be nice to have one TV available in the common areas.

We shall return.

The owners truly showed respect for the integrity of the Inn and it's long history by restoring it to it's original "charm". Everything is done with quality from the food to the decor. The attention to detail is evident throughout.

A great weekend. Beautifully renovated old Inn.

The place was spotless with great common areas - a wonderful library/lounge with a great selection of games and local maps for hikings, x-c skiing etc.

Challenging Snowshoeing and Cross Country skiing right from the door. The owner (Doug) was very helpful with suggestions, maps etc.

Restaurant was excellent. Not inexpensive but fair for the quality of food. I had Beef Wellington one night and Chicken Marsala the other, my wife had Lobster Risotto and Pork Schnitzel. All were excellent. Nice bar area also.

Our room was quite small (we booked fairly last minute and got the last room available) but spotless and well maintained.

Overall, a great find and we'll be making this place (at least) an annual event!

If you're into hiking, snowshoeing, X-C or back-country skiing this is a destination that would be hard to beat.

We visit the area often on business, and we always go back to the Horse & Hound. Uncharacteristically, it is better than the description on its web site - for the simple reason that the owners, staff and chef are better in person. As is the facility. Everything first rate - the food, ambience, outdoor seating (in season), herb garden, local produce, decor. Bravo all round.

We stayed at the H&H Inn a few years ago after they renovated, it was lovely. This time we went for NY Eve dinner and weekend. What a fabulous time! The proprietor, Doug, was so lovely he greeted us when we arrived and made a huge effort to assure our time there in total was not only what we expected, but more so. Excellent dinner all round, service was great, a wonderful atmosphere. I've already recommended to many of my friends to go to this Inn...so clean, neat and professionally managed with heart and care.

Room Tip: If you want a queen bed, choose accordingly, otherwise all are full sized.

This was not the first time I've stayed at the Horse and Hound Inn, and it certainly won't be the last. We had a fantastic dinner on New Year's Eve in front of a a warming fire, and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet of the lovely secluded setting. Doug M (our Innkeeper) was the most gracious host, and the service all around was top notch.

This is a simple and elegant New England roadside Inn, beautifully appointed with furniture and decor collected locally. The food is fresh, the staff is friendly and Katie and Bean (the "hounds" are adorable.

This place is a step back to a simpler time, and not to be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the back yard.
