The food was tasty and the wine selection was great. The servers were very attentive to the table. I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere. I would definitely eat here again!

I don't know why there are two sites. but we posted a review on the Inn....the restaurant on NYE was bustling, I had the filet and lobster combo, I've never had lobster cooked so well, ie not OVER cooked. Very tender, as was the filet. My husband had the duck and he loved it.
Great meal, not a 10 course gourmet, but just what you want on NYE up in NH....would go back anytime. Doug, the proprietor was wonderful as well, you gotta love the guys that run this Inn!

You will wonder where you are going when you turn onto a hard packed dirt road, but don't let that deter you. First thing you will notice is the wonderful restoration of the building. Bright wood floors, nicely furnished rooms, and welcoming lighting and fireplaces. We did make reservations and were seated immediately at a window table. Not cold at all though because a radiator is right next to it, providing just enough heat to keep the chill off on a winter night. The food, small menu but something for everyone. We both got the beef tenderloin however which was probably the best steak I have had in years (and yes I ate at the Capital Grill and Chris Steak house). The steak was cooked perfectly and served over a delicous sauce with fingerling potatoes and the veggie of the day. Everything was wonderfully seasoned. Both our plates were completely clean when she came to take them away (not kidding not a sliver of anything left). We opted for the pumpkin cheesecake (all made in house) and coffee. Both were excellent. I have to comment too on the presentation. The fresh baked rolls came in a small metal bucket with butter in a ceramic dish with a lid (very cool). They served fresh veggies with a dip to get you started. The coffee came in little pots (only down side is these get really hot so you have a bit of a problem pouring your second cup). With a bottle of wine, after dinner drinks, salad, main dishes and dessert we spent under 140.00. Thats pretty amazing. For the same quality of meal I have paid close to 300.00 for two. I will be back and would love to stay there at some point to try breakfast : )

I was taking some friends out for dinner after they drove from Vermont to spend the day with me in the Franconian Notch area. We had not made reservations nor were we "dressed up", and were told that the restaurant was booked. As we were being escorted out, the chef made it known that we were welcome to stay. As it turned out we had a delicious dinner including a maple bread pudding to die for, and the place was still half empty when we left. Thank you to the chef. So food is 5-star, but welcome process dropped rating.

I want to thank this reviewer for thinking of the Horse & Hound Inn when selecting an establishment to dine. Based on this review and the one preceding it, “Stay away if you’re ‘real’ people,” we felt it important to provide information for potential guests who may consider dining with us.

The Horse & Hound welcomes all for lodging and dining. Located on a quiet country road, surrounded by eight private acres and bordered by Tucker Brook, the inn consists of a cheerful Tavern, gracious Dining Room, elegant Lobby, handsome Library, and eight restful guest rooms. While our Dining Room is primarily an amenity for our in-house guests, we also embrace our local community and visitors and strive to provide a pleasant dining experience for everyone.

Reservations. During our slower seasons reservations are not necessary, but recommended. However, during the busy foliage season, when the recent reviewers decided to dine with us, they are especially necessary.

Reservations help us provide praiseworthy food preparation, staffing and service. Although our Dining Room is open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., most of our guests prefer to dine between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. This is a small window of time for our chef to prepare excellent fresh food for our customers and for our servers to serve them in a relaxed but ordered atmosphere.

Food. The reason so many reviews compliment our cooking is because we’re dedicated to cooking fresh. We’ve developed an extensive Kitchen Garden with Greenhouse because the freshest ingredients always make the difference. Our chef prepares enough food each day to accommodate the estimated number of guests on any given night, so we do have a limit on how many folks we can serve per evening.

Service. Arranging for diners to be seated throughout the evening allows our servers to provide consistent and personable service. It also assures a leisurely dining experience as we do not book more than one party per table per night – the table is yours for the evening to relax and enjoy.

Inn. As a full-service inn with eight (8) restful guest rooms, we attempt to complete service in our Dining Room and Tavern no later than 9:30 p.m. This assures our inn guests can comfortably enjoy the inn without the ambient noise dining service may generate.

The reviewer from “Stay away…” (see preceding review) arrived early (around 5 p.m.) with eight (8) other people during foliage season. Although the Dining Room was empty at that time of their arrival, all tables were reserved as we had been booked for days. Additionally, the kitchen was not prepared to accept nine (9) diners without reservations on a night we were fully reserved. (For the “The chef made it happen!” guests, although the dining room was completely booked we were able to accommodate (4) additional people as the chef had over prepared for the estimated number of people that evening.)

We did invite the folks to stay for a cocktail and enjoy the tavern. Guests are always welcome to have a drink in the Tavern or outside on the Patio. They are also welcome to stroll the grounds and the Kitchen Garden.

Our tables in the Tavern are for patrons who choose to have drinks and for those diners who specifically request to dine in the Tavern. We encourage folks without reservations for dinner to join us in our Tavern for beer, wine or cocktails and perhaps dine with us on a subsequent evening when we can assure a leisurely and enjoyable dining experience.

One more side comment on “real” people:

While we are proud of the Horse & Hound’s celebrated history and classic style, we are foremost about the Great Outdoors. Our servers, bartenders, hosts and owners (whether welcoming guests or bussing tables) wear jeans. We have no dress code – we just ask that you be comfortable. For some that means dressing for dinner and for others it does not. The manner in which a guest is dressed or in what vehicle they arrived in is not a consideration. But we do request you call for a reservation during our busy season so we can plan for your arrival and provide a memorable dining experience while you are with us.
