We just returned from a five day trip through the Green and White Mountains. Spring is alive in the forests and the trees are just beginning to bud. The mountain scenery in both areas is spectacular. The Flume trail at Franconia Notch was a highlight of our trip ($29/person). Walking through that narrow gorge along the waterfall was really a treat.
We decided to stay at the FN Guest House because of the mountain views mentioned in previous reviews. The views are stunning. It was wonderful to wake up each morning and the first thing to see were those beautiful mountains. The photos don't do the place justice... inside or out. We stayed two nights in this lovely home and felt comfortable in every way. The hosts are so warm and friendly, and were wonderful about helping us with suggestions of what to see in the area, which we really appreciated. And I got to see the bear our last morning. What a fun surprise! It stayed far enough away, but in great view.
The Flume trail is only about fifteen minutes away, so quite convenient. In fact, the cog railway at Mt Washington is only about fifteen or twenty minutes away as well. Most of the highlights in this area are pretty close. We took our time driving the Kancamagus Hwy and still had lots of day left to explore. For dinner, we tried the Cold Mountain Cafe (on Rt. 302 just east of Rt.142). It was excellent. David is the chef and his dishes are eclectic and inspired. The salad du jour included Briati cheese, roasted pears and toasted almonds, just to name a few of the ingredients. I also had the apple, leek, walnut soup and enjoyed it very much. I don't know if they take reservations, but it's a small place and filled up while we were there even though it's very slow season (the locals usually know the best places).
All in all, it was a very nice leisurely trip with plenty of beautiful mountain scenery and warm hospitality.
Thank you Pauline and Tom!
