“Civilization right next to the wilderness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2013

Joe Dodge Lodge offers rooms on the edge of The White Mountains. I
Rooms come in a full range of private to bunk rooms. Baths are shared - very clean and spacious.
Unlike a hostile, there are linens provided, and no common kitchen. There are 2 lovely common rooms - one The Library that has a nice selection on books and maps about the area. cozy chairs and tables and a gas fireplace. The other also has a fireplace and comfortable sitting but more of a family atmosphere with games available.
Meal plans are available, served in the building next door. We had the breakfast and it was all you can eat, starting at 6:30 a.m. eggs, bacon, beans, French toast, fruit, mussili, bagels - they had it all and it was yummy. During breakfast someone came around and asked if we needed any advice about hikes in the area, and also provided current weather forecasts.
A good value in an unbelievable location!

I booked a room at the lodge hoping I would not regret it when I got there. Our entire experience was enjoyable and pleasant. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room and bathroom were very clean. The meals were fabulous in every way! We loved the nearby hiking and highly recommend the Jioe Dodge Lodge to everyone who warnts to get lucky and stay in a wonderful place in the White Mountains of NH!

We spent one night at Joe Dodge Lodge while hiking the Whites. Our room and bed were both very comfortable. Both our dinner and breakfast were AMAZINGLY good!!! Great, great breakfast buffet!!! The staff were incredibly accommodating as we were running late getting off the mountain in time for dinner. We called ahead and they set aside 4 dinners for our group.

This is a great base camp in a hikers' paradise - at the bottom of Mt Washington - what more could you ask for? The service was good but sometimes it is assumed that you already know the drill. We opted for the dinner, breakfast & room plan for 1 night. We were assessed a $25 surcharge because there was only 2 of us in a 4-person room. There are 2-person rooms but book these early. The bath & showers are down the hall but clean & well lighted. The noise level, considering the number of people in the lodge, is very good. You will hear the early risers because the breakfast buffet runs from 6 to 9 AM. This facility is owned by the AMC, which is a club. They do a great job of taking care of the outdoor & hiking masses with this facility. Yes, we are proud to be members!

I've been hiking Mt Washington for ahem... more than 20 years, and this time decided to stay at the base of the Tuckermans trail.
The lodge and adjoining restaurant are obviously in an amazing location, loved the breakfast. There are only two showers to share amongst all the bunk rooms however, so some delays can be experienced in the a.m. I opted for the shower next door in ground floor level of the hikers day lodge, where there are three.
Overall I found the experience to be pretty cool, communal setting was really interesting. Just a couple of drawbacks to be aware of:
First, price. $64 for a bunk and breakfast is ridiculous. And I was apparently getting their "best deal"
Second, light sleepers (and I am not one) should definitely avoid this lodge. Walls are paper thin and hardwood floors echo sounds (in my case mostly children running) up and down the corridors.
If you care to sleep in until say.... 8am, forget about it.
Enjoy the area, and hit the trails!

We take a small group, mostly retirees, every winter for a few days. It's like returning back home!! The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Joe Dodge Lodge is always reasonably priced, but go midweek and it is an even better deal. Our group enjoys downhill skiing at Wildcat, x-c skiing at Great Glen and Jackson, and winter hiking right out the front door. There are always a few who hike to the base of Tuckerman's. BYOB for a social hour in the fireplaced living room before dinner. Sometimes other guests join us, perhaps it's because we have a piano player among us.

Absolutely the best value.
This is no 4-star hotel, it caters to hikers.
Shared bathroom and showers.
You can't beat the price for a clean and comfy room, good food for supper and breakfast, especially after a long hike in the area.
The mattress was a little bit hard.
Will definitely be back.

Room Tip: We had a large family room with one double and two bunk beds. Facing east, the sun helps get you up...
