“This is one of the best places in the region to swim”

Moose Brook State Park

The big problem in this part of New Hampshire is the lack of good swimming. There are swimming holes here and there if you know about them. But in Moose Brook State Park there is a real beach, with respectable swimming, suitable for family use.

We camped at Moose Brook because I had seen mention of mountain bike trails on the internet. They have a fair amount of fun single track riding right from the park. We rode around 10 miles over a mix of double track and single track. The campground itself was quaint and very well cared for and the setting is beautiful. There is a nice stream fed pond for swimming though we didn't use it as it was bit cool when we were there.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in July. The outer sites that ring the road are private with plenty of space between sites. The inner sites overlook a grassy meadow. Water spigots are well placed and the bathrooms are a short walk away. During our stay we experienced a torrential downpour and the site drained very well. One afternoon we went swimming in the "pool" which was really cold but very refreshing.

Walmart and other stores are a 5 to 10min drive away. I had 3G service to my phone, something I wasn't expecting.

The campground staff were friendly and easy to deal with. Wood and ice can be bought at the office.

Perhaps the largest and most private campsites we've seen in the East. Facilities very basic (fine with us), but they did have hot showers. We were there on a very hot weekend and the swimming hole (they call it a 'pool', but in fact it's a very large swimming hole) was great. It is "pre-warmed" via an intriguing very shallow pool. It was still cold enough to make us think twice about recommending to anyone with a heart condition.
