“Good food, great atmosphere”
Reviewed 12 September 2012

We had another good meal tonight at the Hancock Inn. Usually I would say great meal but I think my grilled spiced chicken had been grilled earlier and then reheated in mircowave with a bit too much BBQ sauce for me. Also felt Calamari was cooked a little too long. However love the atmosphere, normally over the moon about the food and can't wait to try their fall menu in a week or so. I am sure next visit will rate a 5. Good bar drinks and reasonable price.

On Saturday, August 11, 2012 my husband and I had 6:30pm reservations in the Tavern at the Hancock Inn. These reservations were confirmed by the Innkeeoer on August 8, 2012.

You can imagine our disappointment when we were relegated to the dining room after being told by the Hostess as well as a person I assume was the Manager.

We were informed that a table for 2 was not available in the Tavern only a table for 4.

After being seated in the dining room we again approached the Hostess and asked how long we would have to wait for a table in the Tavern. At no time was this offered to us as an option. After checking she said a 5:30pm resefrvation was leaving and we could have that table.

At 7pm a party of 4 was seated at the table beside us and interestingly enough this group of people were tended to not only by the Manager, but also the Hostess, our waitress as well as the bartender. It was clearly evident that they were VIP's.

Bottom line is we soon realized that these VIP's were given our table reservation since no one came in after them and this was the only table available. The Manager did say initially that the table was set for 4. There were 2 other tables of same size with 2 people and simply the setting was for 4.

While our dinner was excellent it certainly did not start our the way we planned our 44th anniversary dinner.

Certainly and apology and explanation should be in order.

Unfortunately, it was clearly the case that your request for tavern seating was left off the reservation. We are very sorry for this. We try and accommodate special seating requests, whether for the taven or dining room, and are usually successful. It does require that we get it right when we take the reservation, which we did not in your case. Again, we very sorry.

We assure you, however, that we did not give away your table to another party. There were no tables available in the tavern at the time you arrived; there was an unoccupied table that was reserved for a party of four at 7:00 p.m. All the other tables were occupied. Somewhat to the point of all this, we don't give away reserved tables - unless the party is significantly late and we haven't heard from them.

Sadly, it is simply the case that we did not take down your reservation correctly the first time. We are glad you enjoyed the food and hope you'll come back to enjoy the tavern from the outset next time!

We found the Hancock Inn through the Deneen Pottery "Find Your Next Mug" website and what an incredible discovery it was. We arrived for a Sunday night stay when the chef was off, but the innkeepers offer a delicious home cooked prix fixe dinner that was absolutely delicious that night. We had chosen one of the smallest rooms, and while it was cozy, it was immaculate and beautifully appointed with a very comfortable bed and nice bath. It was pleasant enough that night so that A/C was not necessary and the windows were open to the beautiful New England breeze. Dinner was served in a beautiful dining area overlooking a beautiful landscape. We awoke to a gourmet breakfast which included the choice of several entrees. I mentioned that I was having a hard time choosing between the French toast and a delicious sounding egg dish. She said, "You don't have to choose, you can have both." to which I said, "Indeed I shall." It was vacation and I broke bad. A better breakfast I cannot remember. My wife, who used more restraint, said hers was outstanding as well.

People who were regulars were saying that the new owners have apparently made a number of changes that make this delightful inn even more attractive than ever. It is obvious that they enjoy doing what they do. Permeating throughout the inn is an atmosphere of gracious welcome and friendliness. One could feel it among the guests all of whom seemed to be enjoying their stay. The staff is attentive without being in any way intrusive. A beautiful, well mannered Golden Retriever was there to greet the guests and to offer his companionship to those who wanted it. We took him up on his offer. The restaurant, rated one of the best in the country, attracts people from a wide area and looking at the menu, we could see how that could be. We can't wait to have dinner there on our return next year.

We had only one regret. We hated to leave and next year will stay for more than one night. The Hancock area is beautiful with so much to see. If you're looking for city night life, this isn't the place, but if you are looking for a quintessential New England country inn experience, the Hancock Inn will be a great choice. In every way, this is an outstanding country inn.

Our stay at this beautiful old inn was wonderful in every way. The historic little town of Hancock was fun and interesting. There is a lovely lake for swimming and boating just a few steps away from the inn. Our room was extremely clean and comfortable. The innkeepers were cordial and as helpful as could be, but in no way overbearing. The breakfast they prepared for us was gourmet. Absolutely the ONLY negative was having to leave. One could not ask for a better experience. We have stayed at many Inns and B & B's and this was the best EVER.

We have stayed at the Hancock Inn many times for family get-togethers, as we have some relatives in the area and we love this unspoiled part of New England. The most recent renovations by innkeepers Jarvis and Marcia are improvements in several respects: they created several comfortable common spaces for talking or quiet reading; relocated the bar, breakfast and dinner areas, with a newly opened patio and rear yard; the air conditioning is better; the staff (including a few family members) is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area; and the new menu choices are well-executed and exceptionally tasty. Rooms vary, and feel as comfortable as at home! The photos are honest, reflecting the crisp and inviting appearance on all fronts! Our visit in late July was wonderful despite a bit of rain.

Room Tip: If you like to sleep with open windows, there are several rooms with great cross-ventilation. There...

I have been to many places that were on the select registry. However, the Hancock Inn is absolutely incredible! Jarvis and Marcia were so wonderful it made our stay so relaxing. We brought our dog Jazzy which is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They actually accomplished something that no other bed and breakfast has ever done... the food was sooooooo good that we actually made sure that we were up early enough for breakfast. We usually sleep in and miss the breakfast portion of our bed and breakfast but since the food at dinner was so incredible we made sure we were up early for breakfast. Let me tell you it was well worth it! Jarvis makes a homemade hash that is awesome. Everything is made fresh and is homemade. It is absolutely worth it. If you stay here I would advise that you make reservations to have dinner here because the food is outstanding! We can't wait to go back!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hancock Inn is a historic property in Hancock, New Hampshire. Built in 1789, it is New Hampshire's oldest continuously operating inn. The inn has 14 rooms for overnight accommodations that are exceptionally well-appointed with period antiques and inclusive of modern amenities, such as in-room chargers, waffle-weave spa robes, flat screen televisions with built-in DVD and wifi throughout the building. Many rooms have gas or electric fireplaces. There are numerous common areas around the inn for the enjoyment of our guests, upstairs and down. The two sitting rooms on the first floor, one with with a Rumford fireplace, are hallmarks of the inn's warmth and hospitality, separating it from the usual of being away, making it feel closer to home. Outside, the inn's 1.5 acres of gardens and field (which includes a professionally maintained croquet pitch in the summer) connect visitors to the Monandock region's preserved landscape and scenery. In the winter, join countless avid snowshoers and cross country skiers and, other times, experience the lakes, rivers and trails that crisscross our corner of the world. The inn's fine dining restaurant, The Fox Tavern, is open seven nights a week. The farm-to-table menu features New England favorites relying on locally raised beef, pork and poultry, plus cheese, fruits and vegetables from area growers, including vegetables from our own gardens. The Tavern's reknowned, cooked-to-order breakfast is served complimentary to house guests. Come to the Hancock Inn and learn why it has been characterized as "the near perfect expression of the New England village inn." ... more   less
