“Great Inn !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

Having been Innkeepers ourselves, we love to stay at B&B's and Inns, but are selective to say the least. The Hancock Inn even surpasses what we hope to find. The Innkeepers, Marcia and Jarvis are genuine, delightful and make their guests feel welcome and comfortable. This positive feeling is carried on by the staff and certainly makes for a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the town, the goat farm next door and a cute play at the Peterborough Players. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent and very nicely presented. Great Place !

Wow! So nice to hear from fellow innkeepers. Thank you for your kind words in your review and your encouragement while you were visiting. Hope we can see you again if your summer allows time to take in another production at the Peterborough Players!

The Hancock Inn is spectacular! Everyone is friendly and they all go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Potter, the house dog, is adorable, sweet and good company. Our dinner and breakfast were insanely delicious. All the rooms are charming, fresh and clean. Our family of five stayed in the Hancock Suite. It was very pleasant. It is difficult to locate B&B's willing and/or capable of sleeping a family of 5 in one room. We wanted the children to experience "quaint" New England. From the historical value of the inn to the goats out back, the Hancock Inn delivered in so many ways. The gentleman next door who owns the goats is perhaps the kindest man on the planet. The only problem is it is not closer to Colorado!

Thank you for such a lovely experience.

Thank you for such a nice review! We can't wait to share it with Stefan next door, who is indeed one of the kindest people around, as are the rest of his family. Any time we THINK we may be working hard as innkeepers, we just look next door at what's required to raise 25+ goats. Not sure we'd manage to remain as nice as they do.

Please come again!

We had stayed at the Hancock Inn in 2012, had planned to stay again last year but had to cancel to return home to be with a sick dog. Marcia and Jarvis were so understanding about having to cancel last year and we knew we would return this year. It was several years ago now that the current owners/innkeepers acquired the inn and what they have done to the place is quite remarkable. The rooms are inviting and most comfortable. Coffee is available on each floor even before breakfast is served. This year we had dinner both nights at the restaurant which is on location at the inn. We can safely say both nights were among the best dining experiences we've had anywhere anytime. My wife had the fish and chips and she said it was incredibly good. I had lamb one of the nights and it was equally outstanding. The first night for desert I had the strawberry rhubarb sponge cake. It was possibly the best dessert I've had on this planet. Their chef is a genius. The dining experience, of course, is further enhanced by the atmosphere of the inn. Then, there was breakfast from which one can choose from a number of options, all incredibly well prepared and delicious. I broke bad and had the pancakes with blueberries one day and French toast the next, both with bacon, of course. Fresh fruit preceded the breakfast entrée.

All of the staff from the front desk to the dining room to those who care for the rooms are most attentive, friendly, and helpful in every way. They all really go out of their way to make guest feel welcome and at home.

Of some 36 country inns we have visited, the Hancock Inn is now our favorite. What Marcia and Jarvis have done to this place makes it a truly remarkable B&B experience. In addition, it is located in a beautiful part of New England. And if you are a collector of Deneen Pottery coffee mugs, the ones from the Hancock Inn are beautiful and come in a variety of colors! Somehow, coffee tastes better when it comes from these stoneware mugs with the inn's design on them.

We just hated to leave after two days and simply can't wait to return to this beautiful place again next summer. And Potter, a very well behaved golden retriever, is there to welcome those of us who love dogs, yet will respect those who for whatever reason may not be dog lovers.

The superlatives in this review are not overstated. It is simply an outstanding inn in every respect.

Room Tip: Any room will be a treat! They are all beautiful. One is even dog friendly and one is suitable for...

Thank you. This is a very generous review, and it fills us with a great deal of satisfaction. We appreciate it.

We should be able to review our guests, too, sometimes. We can't, of course. But, if we could, I suspect our reviews would reflect the same level of enthusiasm and generosity that we so often see in the people that visit our Inn. On balance, our guests make our job easy. You would be a very good example of that.

Thank you.

Jarvis & Marcia.

We used to have a July 4 tradition of staying at the Hancock Inn, but hadn't been back since it was sold. The good news is that the renovation is magnificent: all of the rooms are spotless, charming, and comfortable. The public spaces are extremely well-planned, including a really useful map of the area on the second floor, as well as a charming nook with two comfortable wing chairs, where we happily spent a rainy July 4 reading (if you forget to bring your own books, there is a much- better-than-usual selection on loan, as well as a good selection of DVD's which can be viewed in your room). It took us a bit to get used to the Martha Stewart perfection. Dining room is still quite good, our only complaint being that breakfast was a bit disorganized due to holiday staffing. We will return!

Room Tip: Even the small room we stayed (Jed Fox) in was charming, comfortable, and with a very retro-looking...

Thank you for your kind words and we are so glad you chose to reinstate your July 4th tradition. We try to stay on property during high season, but had one of those once in a lifetime opportunities for one of our children that spanned July 4th weekend and while I'm sure everyone pitched in superbly, it is hard to be short a pair of experienced hands.

We've been staying at the Hancock Inn for many years and have always enjoyed our stay but Marcia and Jarvis, the current owners, should be commended for maintaining the historical feel of the Inn while adding modern improvements such as the warm, friendly tavern, excellent cuisine Wifi and much-needed cosmetics. We love it!

Room Tip: There is no pool, however, there is access to Norway Pond which is a short walk down the quaint main...

The Hancock Inn provides a great getaway and break from conventional hotels and larger venues. It is roomy, yet intimate, offers a variety of room types and sizes, is decorated charmingly, is spotlessly clean, has lovely outdoor spaces and a nice dining room. The Inn is a perfect base for touring the countryside and visiting interesting sites and adjoining towns. All in all, a stay there in summer was delightful, but the Inn beckons for autumnal and winter visits.

Room Tip: Just look at website, which offers realistic photos of each room.

Took a spur of the moment trip to the Monadnock region for some hiking. Found great reviews fore the Hancock Inn on-line and was not disappointed. If anything, staying at the inn helped to make the trip one to remember. The inn keepers were very attentive and made sure we had maps and good directions for our hikes. It was mid week with a few available rooms and we picked one with a claw foot tub (great soak after 7 hours on the trails). it was so great to come back to the inn and have food ready - no need to walk or travel again by car, although the Fiddlehead cafe and market across the street are good too. Our room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The bed was firm, but not hard, which was welcome to two 40-somethings with back problems from injuries.

The breakfast was the best. Excellent food and accommodating to food allergies. The baby goats on the property next door made our mornings as we could wander over and watch them get fed and play around their yard. Highly recommended vacation spot.

Thank you very much for the review. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay at the Inn, and - may we say - you were wonderful adventurers while you were here. It is always nice to see people that are here to explore the trails and streams of the region. Likewise, it makes us happy to see people using the gardens at the inn.

Come back soon.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hancock Inn is a historic property in Hancock, New Hampshire. Built in 1789, it is New Hampshire's oldest continuously operating inn. The inn has 14 rooms for overnight accommodations that are exceptionally well-appointed with period antiques and inclusive of modern amenities, such as in-room chargers, waffle-weave spa robes, flat screen televisions with built-in DVD and wifi throughout the building. Many rooms have gas or electric fireplaces. There are numerous common areas around the inn for the enjoyment of our guests, upstairs and down. The two sitting rooms on the first floor, one with with a Rumford fireplace, are hallmarks of the inn's warmth and hospitality, separating it from the usual of being away, making it feel closer to home. Outside, the inn's 1.5 acres of gardens and field (which includes a professionally maintained croquet pitch in the summer) connect visitors to the Monandock region's preserved landscape and scenery. In the winter, join countless avid snowshoers and cross country skiers and, other times, experience the lakes, rivers and trails that crisscross our corner of the world. The inn's fine dining restaurant, The Fox Tavern, is open seven nights a week. The farm-to-table menu features New England favorites relying on locally raised beef, pork and poultry, plus cheese, fruits and vegetables from area growers, including vegetables from our own gardens. The Tavern's reknowned, cooked-to-order breakfast is served complimentary to house guests.
