For nearly ten years now my wife and I have stayed at the Hancock Inn on an annual basis due the relaxing and quaint environment it has always provided. The previous owner, Robert Short, provided the utmost in hospitality. The current innkeepers, Jarvis & Marcia Coffin, have since continued to maintain that caring and hospitality without missing a New England style beat! Add in the scenic and friendly charm of the Hancock residents with their annual "Old Home Day" event in August and you have a slice of a time gone by in these rushed times. The improvements to the inn and the property have been impressive and wonderful in such a short period of time! See you in 2015.

Room Tip: Try a different room each time you visit since they are all unique in their own way. The Inn even h...

It's wonderful that you were here for Old Home Days, it's quintessential small town Americana and is such a fun example of the spirit the inn aims to embody all year-round for visitors and guests. Thank you for your generous words and we'll keep working over the winter to maintain the building and grounds, improve the guest experience and honor the authenticity and personality of the inn.

Two nights of great atmosphere and wonderful service. We dined both nights at the inn and the food was excellent and unique. We could not have asked for a better experience. We hope to come back very soon!

It is so gratifying to see the work of so many players here at the inn come together to make your visit be all that it can be. We are so glad your stay was rewarding and very appreciative that you shared it on TripAdvisor. Thank you.

This was the best inn - cozy, comfy and homey! From the quaint rocking chairs on the front porch, to the traditional sitting rooms scattered about the house, to the warm and welcoming Innkeepers (including a golden retriever who will be your best friend in an instant, Potter!) you hardly want to leave the property since everything you need is right there! Perfect for a mini reunion with friends or a romantic getaway for two - this place is ideal for a weekend escape. Enjoy a great breakfast served up by Jarvis, one of the Innkeepers, then read the newspaper or book on the rocking chairs on the front porch, go out for a walk about town or the lake, get an afternoon snack at Fiddlesticks across the street, play a game or two of Croqui, relax on the adirondack chairs on the lawn - wash up for dinner and meet for a fabulous drink at the bar then head to the dining room where I recommend the lamb burger or one of the many dishes that are made with locally grown ingredients such as goat cheese. If you're lucky the sky will be clear for a night of star gazing! We will be back!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Every room is unique! You can't go wrong, but I would recommend booking one with the largest bed...

We stayed four days and could not have been more pleased with The Hancock Inn. We enjoyed this inn under the ownership of the previous innkeeper, but the new owners, the Coffins, have brought a happy friendly vibe to the Inn as well as many new improvements.. The Coffins and the staff could not have been more accommodating. We thought we would have to change rooms at the end of the first day but they arranged things so that was not necessary. We were in the Drovers Room, little patio with French doors, three other windows, very comfortable bed, nice shower with heavy shower curtain so you were not fighting it. My impression was that they stayed in the room to make sure the room "worked". And I did not mention the fireplace which would make this room a lovely stay in the winter.

Leslie was great in finding the directions to where we wanted to go...obscure private places. We had a full agenda when we arrived but the innkeepers leave suggestions for activities for the next day which would be great if you had not planned your activities in advance. I want to return and do Medal Day at the McDowell when the studios were open...I had no idea that was a possibility until it appeared as the daily suggested activity.

The breakfasts were delightful and definitely prepared you for the day...fresh fruit, home made granola, juice, coffee, home made breads and muffins and the ten or so items that Jarvis was whipping up in the kitchen...those blueberry pancakes were to die for and the homemade cornbeef hash with poached eggs was a personal favorite. My husband ordered their "stackers" with the locally sourced cheese.

The dining room or the tavern for dinner were delightful...full of happy people enjoying the food...it was a good environment to enjoy the dinner. The dinner menu was varied and all of our choices were delicious. We ordered off the Tavern menu as well as the formal dining room menu. They were very flexible...two appetizers for dinner so I could squeeze in a dessert I had been eyeing was no problem. Ask Jarivis about the apple distilled vodka...became a favorite of my husband.

We did not get to the croquette so we have to come back! And anyone who visits should bone up on Rufus Porter before coming!

For the price the room was nice but not exceptional. Disappointed in small things- towels that appeared to be purchased from a discount store. Location is great for most activities in area. Breakfast was ok but again not exceptional. Stayed in Norway. Room was noisy. Could hear the dinner hour in room. Would probably not return to Inn. Started staying at B&Bs 5 years ago and glad this was not our first experience.

Thank you for the review and comments. We are SO sorry the Inn didn't exceed your expectations during your stay. We promise the towels weren't from the discount store, but it was time to replace them and you missed by only a couple of days delivery of new Turkish towels for all the rooms. It is undeniable that there is noise that comes from the kitchen during service. For the comfort of our overnight guests we try and mitigate against the clamor by making eight o'clock - as opposed to the usual 9:00 o'clock - the last seating for dinner. Generally, this means the kitchen staff is out of the building at a reasonable hour. Our kitchen is otherwise, unavoidably, at the heart of the building, and really at the heart of our business as an Inn and gathering place.

We're very glad you chose the Inn to stay while you were attending a wedding. Please think about coming back and seeing us again.

Even though the term 'Bed and Breakfast' can conjure up images of cozy , antique filled rooms, they usually disappoint. Rooms are generally too small, beds are uncomfortable, and 'antique' furniture looks shabby. The Hancock Inn is a sophisticated, lovely place to stay, with clean, comfortable accommodations and amazing, authentic décor.I try to visit every year, and always look forward to the incredible breakfasts served by the new owners. Love it!

Room Tip: The Rufus Porter room has an authentic wall mural from the 1700's on the wall. Unbelievable that...

We stayed for two nights at this beautiful inn. The building flawlessly combined modern conveniences with the beauty and dignity of the time in which it was built. We felt as though we were living in a simpler, more gracious time.

The staff and innkeepers made us feel completely at home and welcomed. And, to top it off, the food was superb. This really is a very special place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hancock Inn is a historic property in Hancock, New Hampshire. Built in 1789, it is New Hampshire's oldest continuously operating inn. The inn has 14 rooms for overnight accommodations that are exceptionally well-appointed with period antiques and inclusive of modern amenities, such as in-room chargers, waffle-weave spa robes, flat screen televisions with built-in DVD and wifi throughout the building. Many rooms have gas or electric fireplaces. There are numerous common areas around the inn for the enjoyment of our guests, upstairs and down. The two sitting rooms on the first floor, one with with a Rumford fireplace, are hallmarks of the inn's warmth and hospitality, separating it from the usual of being away, making it feel closer to home. Outside, the inn's 1.5 acres of gardens and field (which includes a professionally maintained croquet pitch in the summer) connect visitors to the Monandock region's preserved landscape and scenery. In the winter, join countless avid snowshoers and cross country skiers and, other times, experience the lakes, rivers and trails that crisscross our corner of the world. The inn's fine dining restaurant, The Fox Tavern, is open seven nights a week. The farm-to-table menu features New England favorites relying on locally raised beef, pork and poultry, plus cheese, fruits and vegetables from area growers, including vegetables from our own gardens. The Tavern's reknowned, cooked-to-order breakfast is served complimentary to house guests. Come to the Hancock Inn and learn why it has been characterized as "the near perfect expression of the New England village inn." ... more   less
