Went to Pine for a casual dinner to close out a rainy Labor Day weekend here. Simple orders all around. The easiest order - kids grilled cheese and fries-- took over an hour, despite our several inquiries about it. And, it was served AFTER my husband and had I finished eating our dinners. Seemed the kids meal was completely forgotten about. Bummer. And, to top it off the waiter - Michael- faded into the background once the kids meal was officially proclaimed "missing", as he Promised extra chocolate milk and a "desert on him" to no avail. Disappointing.

The Pines has a very sophisticated menu that is different from any place in town and yet varied enough to appeal to a wide audience. The gnocchi with peas and bacon was outstanding as was the beet salad. The rack of lamb is also well-prepared as is everything on the menu. The atmosphere is not the cozy one you would expect in this New England college town but it is warm and inviting none the less. Not cheap but worth the money.

Spacious, elegant without being stuffy, and truly imaginative and thoughtful food. Mezzaluna were hand-made pasta stuffed with ricotta, light as a cloud, sauced with a fragrant fresh pea puree, and plated with tiny fresh mushrooms and lovely wilted swiss chard--imaginative and luxurious without blowing the calorie budget. Veal medallions tender, flavorful, woodsy mushrooms and superb demi-glaze. Service attentive and friendly.

After attending the reading of a new play (needed lots of work) at the Hopkins Center, we walked next door for dinner at Pine in the Hanover Inn. Quite the find! Farm to table menu prepared with care. Everything we ordered from pasta to scallops to beef was delicious.

Although somewhat pretentious, Pine is certainly at the top of the list for restaurants in downtown Hanover. I've been there several times and have not been disappointed. The veal and halibut are particularly good. The menu doesn't offer a large number of options, but the options provided are fairly diverse. Dessert is okay but I wish they'd bring back their fabulous banana dessert.

Service is a bit slow so be prepared to spend the evening.
