“What a Waste”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2013 via mobile

Canoe Club is a nice atmosphere with a good wine list. Too bad they don't do food to match.

We came for a late lunch. Small plates - here's the rundown:
--gnocchi: goopy and bland
--beet salads: wilted bag spinach from the grocer, virtually undressed.
-- curry chicken salad: better but still sitting on curled dead greens.

Ever hopeful (and still hungry) we ordered dessert:
-- apple galet: in the freezer too long, we had a hard time cutting it with a knife. My parents indicated they preferred the apple galet at the dining room of their retirement home!
-- chocolate pecan torte: good crust/ but what is that brown gelatinous stuff?
-- ice cream-- really? Out of a flavor listed as a staple on the menu. And there must be someone in the kitchen whose afraid of running out of everything else: how else does a $2 teaspoon happen in the land of dairy?

All served with that smug air of "aren't we special" and the truth is, no, you are not.

“Excellent evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2013

We have eaten here half a dozen times, and it has never failed to please. They do Italian very well. Most recently the veal ravioli special and the seafood pasta were superb. The appetizers were also excellent - the chef has a way with calamari. They had a small jazz combo, which was pleasant and not intrusive - we could still talk over the music. Prompt and friendly service. A most excellent evening.

“Loved it!”

Great spot, very good food fairly priced, service excellent and the music an added bonus, interesting but not obtrusive. Eclectic selection of beer and wine. Intriguing and welcoming decor.

“Overrated and bland”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2013

The menu isn't very exciting at all, and the prices are justifiable for so-so food. Some of their items are really heavy and for a restaurant that USED to consider itself the best in town (sorry, you've been knocked over by PINE), the food is not creative and inconsistent.

“Awesome mussels!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2013

We found this restaurant several years ago, by accident and have returned every year since then when we are in Hanover. It's an excellent restaurant in a college town so it doesn't necessarily need to provide incredible food - but it does! We always seem to gravitate back to the steamed mussels which includes french fries and a sauce over the entire dish that ties it altogether. It's hard not to use your bread to soak up every last bit of the wonderful juice at the bottom of the dish! We actually ate here 2 nights in a row during our last stay in Hanover - it's that good! And despite being homecoming weekend, the staff was incredibly personable even with the busy environment.
