“Unsurpassed view for very little effort!”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

A short walk up to the top of Rattlesnake Mountain (no, there are NO rattlesnakes!) is a must for anyone who travels to the Squam Lakes area. The hike up to the top takes no more than 45-50 minutes, and the view is amazing. I have been up too many times to count, in all seasons. My favorite time to walk up is on a full moon night (and walk down with a flashlight). So nice! So, for very little effort, you get the best view of the Squam Lakes area in my opinion. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the view! You won't be disappointed.

“Spectacular view of Squam Lake, with modest effort”
Reviewed 4 February 2012

This is one of the "best view for the effort" hikes ever!! A 30-45 minute walk up a gentle wooded trail brings you to a cliff overlooking Squam Lake (of "On Golden Pond" fame - 1981 movie with Katherine Hepburn, andJane and Henry Fonda). There is also a much steeper trail up from the lake side if you arrive by boat. The trail is on the northwesterly shore of Squam Lake, 6 miles NE of Holderness. Look for small dirt parking area on the north side of Rt. 113. The trail starts on the south side of the road and is 1.8 miles round trip.

“Great winter hike with fantastic views”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

I'm a very slow and plodding hiker, but I love hiking in the winter. Rattlesnake Mountain makes a wonderful hike - whether you just go up West Rattlesnake or get a bit more ambitious and take the ridge trail to the summit of East Rattlesnake! Even though the weather had been warm, we still encountered icy conditions and I was glad I had my micro-spikes! (One member of our group didn't and he slipped and slid all the way!) Spectacular views from both peaks!
