Delightful breakfasts, meticulous and charming rooms and great local advice from Sally and Dick. Dudley was charming as well.

We spent a four day weekend at the Carter Notch Inn in late June; it was the second time in 5 years we were able to get away for a few days from our kids and careers. A weekend like that is so rare that the inn needed to be perfect. It was. Everything about our visit was a success. The Inn is exactly as advertised on their website. The rooms are even more charming than the photographs, and the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed the large porch, the hot tub and the adirondack chairs in the yard, all in a gorgeous NH mountain setting. The entire Inn is immaculate - it may be the cleanest inn or hotel we've ever seen - and full of extra touches (cookies and tea in the afternoon, wide selection of DVDs, complimentary beer and wine in the fridge, and binders overflowing with area attractions and menus). Last but not least, Dick and Sally are perfect hosts. They seem to love their guests (many are repeaters) but also let them be; if you want suggestions for activities, restaurants, hikes, etc., they have a wealth of information. If you tend to figure things out for yourself, they let you be. We got to looking forward to hitting the front porch of the inn late in the day for a beer or glass of wine, because often Dick and Sally will be there too and their company is so enjoyable. We followed their restaurant recommendations every night and were extremely pleased. Dudley, the resident sheep dog, was a fantastic inn keeper in his own right. Using the inn as our base, we hiked Mt. Jackson one day, explored Franconia Notch another and swam at the falls/ledges in Jackson itself. My only regret is not having time to play the 9 hole country golf course across the street from the inn. We have stayed at a lot of inns and hotels over the years and this one is really special - it is the kind of inn that makes you want to stop trying new inns. We will return as soon as we can.

Room Tip: We chose one of the smaller rooms and it was lovely. If the economics are tough for you, choose a s...

Maybe it was the weather, which was glorious—or the setting, which was picture-perfect. Or perhaps it was the inn itself with its attractive rooms, gracious hosts (Dick and Sally), and endearing four-legged ambassadors (Dudley and Lulu)—not to mention the hearty breakfasts, complimentary wine, and numerous other amenities. Whatever the reason, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate our wedding anniversary last month. Actually, this was our second visit to the Carter Notch Inn and it turned out to be even more memorable than our first—thanks, in part, to the brazen intrusion of an uninvited guest—a very hungry and cheeky black bear—at breakfast one morning. Also, we were able to make the drive up Mount Washington this time, something we couldn’t do on our last visit since the road had just closed for the season—in mid-October! On that occasion, Sally and Dick very kindly mapped out a day’s worth of alternate activities, so we had a delightful stay despite our initial disappointment. This time everything worked out perfectly, including our decision to splurge a little on the room. For this special occasion we chose #6, which has a comfy king bed and overlooks the back yard with lots of light and a small private deck. While it would be hard to top our experience on this visit, that certainly won’t prevent us from returning.

My husband and I love this Inn. We have been coming since 2007, so we can say the excellence is long-term. Sally and Dick are the best, most entertaining innkeepers you'll ever meet. I only wish we could spend more time with them! Drinking a glass of wine on the porch, serving up fabulous breakfasts, advising guests on the best places to go for their interests, or just chatting with you, their friendly professionalism and charm make everyone feel at home, whether you've spent the day shopping, riding the Cog Railway, or hiking up Mt. Washington. They know and love the area, and they are thrilled to make sure you have the best time possible. We started our hiking careers based on their advice! And no matter where else we go, the Carter Notch Inn, particularly Room 8, is our home away from home. Two tips: you will encounter a dog and a cat here, and if you have any food restrictions, all you need to do is let Sally know and she'll be happy to comply. It's the best Inn for so many reasons!

Room Tip: The rooms with jacuzzis are extra-special, but there's a hot tub for everyone to use, too! Each...

This is a bed and breakfast hotel run by Sally and Dick with some help from Dudley the Old English sheepdog and Lulu the cat. Beautifully decorated and located near the delightful town, some might say village, of Jackson in New Hampshire, this is a welcoming home from home with two great British hosts. Bed comfy, air con quiet but effective, excellent travel support, good hot tub and great breakfast.

Carter Notch Inn is a fabulous B&B. Beautiful house, perfectly appointed. Sally and Dick were born to be B&B hosts. They genuinely like people and enjoy having guests. They love the area and giving advice and directions to area attractions and local restaurants. You simply cannot do better for a get-away, and for a lovely home base from which to explore the White Mountains.

Room Tip: We poked around the house, and all the rooms we saw were lovely.

When you are the 271st 5-star rating out of 280 ratings total on TripAdvisor, that really speaks for itself.

It would be hard to overemphasize how wonderful the Carter Notch Inn was. Sally and Dick have a way of making you feel like you are their personal friends and guests in their home (which, I suppose, you are). They are kind, friendly, and generous. They are knowledgeable about the region, and excited to share it with you. The place is immaculate (I have never seen a cleaner bathroom), elegantly and thoughtfully outfitted, quiet, and beautiful. The breakfasts were incredible (Sally's banana bread is out of this world, and if you tell her so she'll give you two extra pieces for the road! :D ). We had just about the best time imaginable, and would return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: We stayed in the "treehouse" room 8, and it was adorable! Then again, so were all the oth...
