“Charming old seaside resort, indeed!”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

We spent 3 nights at Wentworth on our first stop of a Fall trip through the New England states. It's located about 10 minutes from downtown Portsmouth, NH. A bit off the beaten path, to be sure, but right on the ocean. The grounds are quite beautiful, with a large garden and many flowers and plants in the area fronting the hotel.

We had a standard room with a king bed, and while a bit tight, we expected this from an older hotel. The bathroom, on the other hand, was quite spacious. The accommodations were comfortable.

The hotel has two restaurants on site: Salt, the main dining room in the hotel proper, and Latitudes, a more casual setting overlooking the harbor with a terrific view and outdoor seating available. We dined at Salt our first evening and enjoyed a terrific meal in an elegant setting with great service. A lighter meal two evenings later in the bar was also more than satisfactory.

Service at Wentworth is about as good as it gets. The staff is quite friendly and engaging, and the woman who staffed the concierge lounge during the evening was a veritable wealth of information on local activities and attractions.

One note regarding the location: if you wish to dine in Portsmouth, be prepared for a drive along unfamiliar two-lane roads. We elected to stay on site after dark.

This place was just lovely and we had a fantastic weekend. We had a stunning view from our room (but I take it every room has a great view). Everything was really done well. We loved walking around the grounds, reading on the nice chairs on the decks, and watching the ball game in the lounge in the evening.

For food, we had a delicious dinner in Salt on our first night. Excellent food and beautifully presented. On the 2nd morning we ordered a light breakfast from room service. I was a bit annoyed that they estimated 35-40 minutes for coffee, juice and toast, but in fact they delivered it in 15 minutes.

The workout room was a bit small for a place of this size, but that said, very few people were using it so I had no problem doing my workout.

I would definitely return to this lovely resort.

Stayed at the hotel one weekend with my daughter, had a great father-daughter bonding time in a classic old hotel. This year, the Wentworth marked its 10th anniversary under the Marriott brand; the ancient hotel was dormant for years until it was renovated and reopened in 2003 after a six-year, $30-million-dollar rehab, that added a spa wing with indoor pool and jacuzzi, fireplaces in 18 suites and a waterfront hideaway, Little Harbor Marina Suites. Among other accolades, Wentworth earned National Trust for Historic Preservation recognition, an AAA Four Diamond award, and an Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.

Which is all well and good, but it has to live up to all that. The Wentworth does, with 165 rooms, well appointed and clean, and a staff that was unfailingly courteous and helpful. I'd never been there before, so not sure what it had looked like, but one of the more recent renovations was opening the hotel's restaurant, renaming it SALT Kitchen + Bar, a contemporary culinary space with enough rustic leftovers from the old to provide a unique and rather tasty balance. They busted out walls to open the place up, doing away with the dark Roosevelt Room and adding a magnificent long bar and open chef's area, maintaining antique molding and a marvelous rotunda above the dining area that is a signature architectural defect from the old place.

The food was exquisite, the menu the brainchild of Chef Ken Lingle, heavy on seafood, a natural given it's seaside location, that featured some amazing seared scallops and a 2-pound lobster dinner that was one of the most succulent I've ever tasted, the meat taken from the shell and poached in vanilla butter. Pretty amazing stuff. As is the wine room, with long chef's table, a great spot for big parties.

The hotel has some pretty cool history as well: It was host to Russian and Japanese diplomats negotiating an end to the 1905 Russo-Japanese war, staying at the hotel at no charge while the formal negotiations proceeded at the nearby Portsmouth Navy Yard. On September 5, 1905, they signed the Portsmouth Peace Treaty that ended what would be known as World War Zero, the first global conflict of the 20th century. Theodore Roosevelt got the Nobel Peace Prize for orchestrating the negotiations – at a distance. He never came to Portsmouth so local citizen diplomacy made a significant different in the outcome, according to hotel historians.

Wentworth is also located hard by a local shopping Mecca, the retail outlets in Kittery, Maine, hundreds of stores offering fairly decent discounts on a variety of wares, which made my 27-year-old daughter quite happy, as did her mani-pedi at the hotel spa.

The hotel is a short jaunt from Boston, less than an hour (depending on abysmal Boston traffic), and a good jumping off point for trips north into the upper reaches of New England.

Room Tip: Upper floors have better views of harbor. If you don't like walking, get room closer to elevator...

We stayed here during the first week in October 20013 and our stay couldn't have been any more enjoyable. This is one of the few remaining old lumber/shipping-era grand hotels in the area so, yes it is old but while it feels historic it never feels old or run down... it just feels grand.

We never ate at any of the hotel's restaurants, so can't speak to the dining aspect, but the service, attention, and room amenities were always top-notch. We didn't have any concerns as everything was already attended to.

You'll experience great views of the little harbor and if you visit at the right time of year, as we were, the changing leaves are stunning.

Parking gets a bit crowded if you come in late at night (we visited in peak season) but were always able to find a space. There is free wi-fi in all the rooms, a luxurious spa with indoor pool, and outdoor pool, and a wonderful wooden porch with rocking chairs that wraps around the entire building.

i would definitely recommend a stay in this grand hotel is in the area.

What a Fantastic Experience we had at the Salt!
The decor is sexy and exciting. The service was equally impressive. The appetizers and meal choices incomparable and enticing! We enjoyed everything. But the meatballs, they were amazing. The marinara sauce coupled with the almonds and watercress was a absolute must try!
The Dinning Manager Dean was engaging and disarming! A remarkable addition to the Wentworth By the Sea management staff.
