“Calm and lovely”

This is a beautiful place from spring through fall (I haven't gone in winter). The gardens are lovely, as is the house. I have volunteered here, so I may be biased, but it's a gorgeous place.

Occasional events, like plant sales or outdoor concerts.

“A very lovely place to spend time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2013

I visited The Fells yesterday afternoon and was very impressed. Took the house tour and learned a lot, not only about the house and grounds, but also about the family's place in national history. The grounds are just beautiful, a combination of planned landscape architecture coupled with natural beauty.

“History, gardens, and a walk in the woods”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2013

What more could ask on a lovely day than to visit this beautiful garden and historic house in the Sunapee region of NH? The half mile walk from the parking lot to the main house is pleasantly downhill, but if you can't walk that far, you may drive your car and park near the house. Guided house tours by trained volunteer docents (at 11, 12, 2 and 3) are included in the $10 admission price. A guided garden tour at 1 pm may be your choice, or simply stroll through the gardens by yourself. The rock garden enjoys a view of Lake Sunapee and is over 100 years old, carefully tended by an army of volunteers. The perennial bed is gorgeous in summer. The "Old Garden"--built in the early 1900s, is a hidden gem. Several walking trails on the property let you get into the woods--find the wildflower loop, or the longer trail that goes to the lake shore.
This was the summer home of Sec of State John Hay (1838-1905) and his descendents until it was deeded to US Fish and Wildlife in 1987. Since then a cadre of locals have sought to maintain the house, furnish it in period style, and bring the gardens back to their glory. Enjoy anytime from spring thru fall, and snowshoe the land in the winter. House is open for tours Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Check the website for hours: thefells.org
My one disappointment this year is the limited number of outdoor sculptures (only 5, I think). Has been more exciting in the past.

A nice way to spend our afternoon. Beautiful flowers. Nice walk down to the lake. Beautiful flowers for sale there. And a nice walk up a hill behind it.
