“Nice Hotel, Convenient to Outdoor Winter Activities”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2009

We just got back from a week-long stay at the Eastern Slope Inn, and had a great time! We booked a studio room through RCI's last minute deals. Our room was in the Carriage House Suites, which is directly behind the main Inn. The room was very spacious... a few things to note about the room:

The first day we got there, there was definitely a strange smell... I think it was the cleaning solution they used for the carpet/couch upholstery or something. It aired out fine, but was a little irritating for the first night.

The bed was a queen sized murphy bed; not the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, but not the worst either. Definitely didn't have any trouble sleeping in every morning! We never pulled out the sofa bed, so I can't really comment on that.

There is a gas fireplace in the room; however, the fireplace is the heating source for the room, and only comes on when it senses that the temp is below the thermostat setting. It did a good job of heating the room, but you can't just relax with the fireplace on; once the temperature in the room hits the thermostat setting, the flames go out.

There is a very large jacuzzi tub in the bathroom (this was also the shower); nice for those who want to soak, but might make it difficult for people who can't step up very high to get into the shower.

There was a small kitchen area with a dishwasher, refrigerator, two burner stove, and microwave. We ate out just about every day, so we didn't really take advantage of this.

The hotel also had a nice indoor pool and jetted jacuzzi, as well as an outdoor jacuzzi that was more of a soaking tub. All were very clean and nice and warm, nice to soak in after a day of outdoor activities.

The location of the hotel is great! We spent the week xc skiing and showshoeing. There is a great xc ski area across the street, and a state park right down the road as well with great views of two rock/ice climbing ledges. It is only 20-30 mins to Great Glen trail area, which is also the base of the Mount Washington Auto road. The inn is a very convenient walk to many restaurants and shops in the village, and the outlet shopping is only 5 mins away. There were also quite a few ski areas within a 30 min. radius (we are not big downhill skiers, so we didn't explore these on our trip).

Overall, we had a great trip and would not hesitate to come back to the Eastern Slope Inn!

ESI is a timeshare/hotel that has gotten mixed reviews. We are here as I write this. Staff has been very helpful and friendly. We booked 2 separate rooms because there were no 2 bd available at time. Asked for upgrade and got a 2b/2ba unit in the Robert building across from the main hotel. I had heard that there were issues here but the unit was clean and had more than enough amenities.
It is a basically a 2bed lockout with the 1 bedroom having a full kitchen and washer/dryer and the 2nd being a studio with a mini kitchen.

It is not "luxurious" but is very comfortable with plenty of room for 4 people.

The front desk has board games as well as a game room with ping pong, pool, etc. There is also an indoor pool and outdoor heated jacuzzi. This is an older building on the Nat'l Register so don't expect brand new and fancy. There are many different rooms so it is important to ask about what is or is not in the room. I must say that we were a little worried as we usually stayed in very nice condos on our ski vacation but we are extremely pleased with everything about Eastern Slope.

This is a review about the Suites at Eastern Slope Inn and the Whittaker House to be specific. We booked a studio through RCI.

Check-In was a smooth process once we found a parking space in the front lot. We received our room assignment and the normal packet of local information, etc. For those who have commented on the elevator in the main building - it is currently being completely replaced.

We drove back to our unit in the Whittaker portion of the property. Upon entering the room we were impressed with the size of this studio unit. The room was freezing cold so first thing we did was locate the thermostat. We then discovered the room was heated by a gas fireplace. Unfortunately, the resort does not have digital thermostats so finding an exact comfort level proved to be almost impossible throughout our 3-day stay. Also, in the middle of the night the fireplace would kick on and by kick on I mean "explode" on causing me, a normally very heavy sleeper, to awake each time.

The bathroom was a good size and had no real complaints with anything in there. The floor and shower tile look like recent upgrades while the lighting fixtures look to be originals.

The kitchen area was large complete with a 6-person table, refrigerator, two-burner stove top, microwave/convection oven, coffee pot, tea pot, and dishwasher. We ate out but if we were there for an entire week likely would have spent some time at the kitchen table!

The bed (a queen size Murphy) is not very comfortable at all. The fitted sheet pops off the top corners every 30 minutes. The pillows are comfortable and plentiful (in the closet near the bathroom). We did not try the pull out sofa as this was only a two-night stay.

In the main lobby they have binders of restaurant menus which came in handy for us. The resort documentation also said they have lists for hiking, waterfalls, etc. but since it rained the entire time we did very little hiking.

I would definitely stay here again but would shoot for at least a one-bedroom to get a real bed. Also, I hope the resort upgrades the thermostats to digital to help its guests try to find a nice comfort level instead of the generic, "old school" thermostats currently in place.

  • Liked — the overall atmosphere of the resort
  • Disliked — the murphy bed and loud fire place

Please know that the Eastern Slope Inn is really two different operations at the same physical location.....and knowing that can help you make your reservation and match your expectations to what you may actually encounter.

The Eastern Slope Inn is an old (on National Historic Register old....) New England Inn. Most of the rooms tend to be on the smallish side, with an aged, slow elevator and oldish fixtures in some cases.

The Suites at Eastern Slope Inn is the second business at this location. It includes timeshare condominiums in two modern buildings (10 years old or less) behind, and separate from, the original Inn. These units tend to be much more spacious than those in the Inn itself, have more modern plumbing fixtures and amenities (including gas fireplaces), and can be much more comfortable.

Both the Inn and the Suites have use of the same pool and hot tub, are serviced by the same Front Desk, and share a common general telephone number.

A word to the wise -- when posting reviews to this site, or reading reviews posted by others, try to differentiate between the Inn and the Suites. That will make your comments and their usefulness much more meaningful.

To say we were disappointed with our stay here is an understatement. We expected great things considering the location and the reputation, but unfortunately there is nothing good to say. The AC made a horrible clanging noise which made it impossible to sleep, the bathroom had hair all over when we first checked in, and a t-shirt was missing from my room after housekeeping cleaned. The front desk did not seem to care about my concerns. I'll never stay here again.

I am so disappointed with this resort to the point of absolute outrage. This place was VERY expensive so I had high expectations and they were not met in the least. I have had better stays at Motel 6. It started with the internet directions being wrong/hard to follow. When I finally got there the Resort looked nothing like in the pictures. The pictures were definitely taken YEARS ago because the place has become very run down since then. The girl who checked me in was on a personal call when I came in and ignored me for close to 10 minutes before finally asking me "do you want anything?" Why yes, young lady, I want to give you money for goods and services. Do you see how that works? Check in went very slowly but finally we were off to see our room. When we got to the door the lock was broken and we had to return to the desk to ask for help and the clerk was on the phone again chatting apparently chatting with her boyfriend/husband. The maintenance man happened to be standing by and he assisted me. After he fixed the door handle we had no problems getting in after that. Upon entering the room we were disgusted by the hideous and outdated decor. it was a nonsmoking room but there was a large very noticeable burn hole in one of the comforters and the room had a strange odor, not quite like smoke, but more like mothballs. There was trash in the trash can. There was no remote for the television. There were only two towels in the room and they were ratty and rough and weren't white at all. They obviously had not been replaced in YEARS. There were stains all over the ceiling from water damage and visible mold. The carpets were filthy as well. When I lifted the toilet lid there was a bowel movement still floating in the toilet!! I was shocked and appalled. When I called the desk to inform them of our problems the phone rang and rang with no answer. We decided to go about our day of tourism and let them know of our problems later when someone more attentive would hopefully be on shift. We returned that evening and the woman at the desk would not change our room even though we had not touched a thing in this room. She did give us a remote control for the tv, which was nice. We were told we could speak to the manager the following morning. That night we were very itchy in bed and after a while of itching we turned the lights on and discovered bed bugs! I slept that night across the room in a chair. The next morning the manager was not in as promised. We cut our stay short and left that first morning. Later that week I tried calling back to speak to a manager and again there was none in. The next day, still not in. I have left messages to call back and have received no calls! Save your money and stay elsewhere.

  • Liked — The view from my rearview window as it got smaller and smaller
  • Disliked — Everything was equally horrible, but it's the bugs i'll have nightmares about for years to come

NHAMSCO, Front Desk Manager at Eastern Slope Inn, responded to this review, 22 October 2008
We are sorry Jason350 did not enjoy his stay in North Conway. As the manager
of the Front Desk at Eastern Slope Inn, I feel that this review is not an
accurate portrayal of our resort, or of our team of Guest Service Agents.

Our team at the resort strives for excellence and has been recognized on
trip advisor as well as on other hotel rating sites for our response to
guest's issues or concerns. We have a team of two or more guest service
agents on every shift, so a guest checking into our resort would never wait
10 minutes to be checked in. Our guest service agents are very professional
and use break times not company time to address personal issues.

We have a member of the management team on almost every shift between the
hours of 8am and 11pm. On the rare occasion where a member of the
management team is not at the desk, our team of GSA are available to problem
solve and offer solutions and know that if need be, a member of management
can always be reached by phone. In addition, we never go more than 24 hours
without a manager at the desk.

Our rooms are cleaned by a well-trained team of housekeepers and inspected
prior to our guest's arrival to ensure the level of cleanliness our resorts
guests expect. Although the Inn is a historic building on the national
historic registry, we are constantly updating and improving on our rooms
including a recent upgrade of all our beds in the Main Inn and our Randall
House building to queen pillow top beds with plush white comforters. If
this guest were here at our Inn in August, they would have been sleeping on
a bed that was less than 3 months old, under brand new white linens.

Again, I am truly sorry that a visitor to our valley did not enjoy their
stay at one of our area establishments, however based on some of the
comments made, I feel it is highly likely that this comment was incorrectly
entered under the Eastern Slope Inn Resort.

We have tried to contact this contributor through Trip Advisor and have not had any luck with them responding - we would certainly go out of our way to address these types of allegations.

The hotel staff is great. Very friendly and helpful.
The main building is very old and the elevator is slooooooooow beyond belief! Be prepared to climb stairs.
We had a king size bed and it was wonderful. Top of the line linens. I didn't have a Murphy Bed, I heard those were awful.
The room furnishings are old and the chairs and carpets are stained.
The pool and hot tub where disappointing. The hot tub jets don't work and the pool is dirty and full of screaming kids.
