Take a coat. Wool cap. Wool face mask. Gloves. Bring ear muffs. Wear long underwear. Hiking boots are a good idea. On June 9th it was 26 degrees with the wind chill factor. Ride the cog railway, tip the brakeman. Hope for clear weather.

Kidding aside, it's well worth the trip up to the top regardless of conveyance. It's truly a memorable experience.

I've been visiting the summit since I was a kid and every few years I still go back and it's always a new experience. The weather conditions can vary to the extreme. My Wife and I took one of the final trips up on the railway in 2017. It was the best day I've experienced up there, the weather was clear and warm at the top. I would recommend you at least take one trip up either on foot, railway or vehicle. Each has it's own unique experience.

After traveling up to the summit of the mountain, we spent at least two hours enjoying all the information that was shown us in the various sites. The mountain house display was informative , and the weather station site was really in detail of why you would not want to be up at the summit in the winter. The actual drive up the highway is NOT for the weak of heart, but the sights from the summit were breathtaking!
