Certainly nothing to look at, inside or out. The tables and chairs as well as the building are run down and cheap, but the food was excellent. The bread is heavenly! We tried the orange cinnamon and raisin. I had a breakfast skillet special, which was scrambled eggs with veggies and smoked ham on top of fried potatoes and cheese. My partner had two eggs, perfectly cooked to specification, thick smoked bacon, home fries and toast. The portion and taste were outstanding. The service was great and quick, coffee was continually refilled and our order was correct and piping hot. If they rehabbed the place, they could get five stars. We even noticed on the way out that they don't have a dishwasher, they do all the dishes by hand. A decent business loan could propel the Northwood Diner into 2013. It has great potential.

Thanks for your review. We DO have a dishwasher which rinses all the dishes at 180 degrees. What we think you saw was the kitchen help pre-rinsing the dishes before they go into the dishwasher. Hope you stop in again soon.

We eat here regularly and have not found a better breakfast place in the area. The decor is typical for a New England diner, but no one goes here for the decor. People go for the food and the people. The homemade breads are fantastic and are worth the extra charge. I frequently get the spinach and cheese omelet - the spinach is always fresh! This is usually my test for whether a breakfast place is any good; if the spinach isn't fresh, we never go back. I've never eaten lunch here, but the lunch menu looks delicious!

Plenty of choices for breakfast and lunch. The burgers are very good and they'll cook them "your way"! Typical diner decor and a great place to catch up on the local gossip. Daily specials. Prices are reasonable.

We come here often and are never disappointed. The breakfasts are huge and hearty and the waitstaff is friendly and efficient. Daily specials are always delicious--but so is everything else!

Tucked away on a gentle curve of Route 4 we spotted this place with visions of country breakfasts and hot coffee in our heads. The pickup trucks and local license plates were a good sign. The place is small, simple, clean, and welcoming. Our breakfast orders were not extraordinary despite the offer of a custom made breakfast "bowl " however things got interesting when we were offered an unusual selection of home baked breads. My toast of anadama bread was wonderful, and it came with an explanation of the recipe and the why and wherefore of the unusual name. Something about a settler called Anna who could not bake bread, unlike the talented owner operator of 18 years who obviously loves to bake.
I chatted with the owner/ baker and was quickly faced with the dilemma ...what to take back to Toronto. We settled on the last loaf of their latest offering...Jalapeno. I can happily report that it was a hit here at home.
This road is my favorite way back to Canada if you choose the Vermont route (89) towards Montreal. There had been excellent state Rest Areas, but in June the buildings were shuttered although the grounds remain as do the picnic tables. This had been a favorite stop on the way to Southern Maine for many years.
This stretch of state road from Portsmouth to Concord has many attractions aside from the antiquing available along the way. At Dover Point , the eastern end of the road, you will find the original Newick's for lobster and seafood treats. At the Western reach you will find the state capital. Just look for the golden dome. Plenty of interest here too. But now it's the heavenly carbs at the diner for me...next time I get to choose!
