“Best food in the North Country”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

I've stayed at Tall Timber a number of times over many years, and while the cabins are a bit pricey, the lodge rooms are comfortable and affordable. The restaurant is excellent and the tavern attached is also. The Rainbow Grill is the best food north of the Notches in NH, in my opinion, but be sure to get a reservation if you go on a weekend.

Thank you Paul for your recent review of our lodge and dining at the Rainbow Grille.

Yes, the food is very good (the Rainbow Grille was named a "Best of NH" this year by NH Magazine, and we also received another Editor's Pick from Yankee Magazine), and reservations are a great idea if you're looking to enjoy Chef Dave's great Prime Rib or wide array of fresh Maine seafood when you venture north again.

Thank you again for dining and staying with us and we hope to have you back again in the future!

Tom Caron

We stayed at Luk's Lakeview, just up the road from the main lodge. Loved the privacy and the view. The cabin has a king size bed and jacuzzi, along with a gas fireplace. Well-equipped kitchen and very comfortable great room. After a day's hiking, the jacuzzi was much appreciated. Could hear the loons from the lake, and we were there for the supermoon, which rose right to the left of our view. Great deck. Only problem we had was there are no closets. A place to hang coats when you first walk in, but none of the rooms had a closet. Or if they did, it was locked. Tall Timbers manages this for the owner, but I do think there should be one closet available. We were only two people so we could use the other bedrooms (2) to lay our clothes out. We would definitely stay here again. Free wi-fi, too.

Room Tip: If you're looking for a king bed and a jacuzzi, this is just about the only place in Pittsburg w...

Thank you again for your recent stay with us, and we're glad that you enjoyed Luk's Lakeview. The jacuzzi is a huge bonus at the end of a long day out in nature, and it looks as though you took advantage of it, and the view of the lake from the deck is pretty special too.

Thank you also for your comments regarding the closet space - we will certainly look in to trying to improve this aspect of the cabin.

Thank you again and we hope to have you staying with us again in the future!

Being from southern California, Tall Timber is almost as far from from home as I could get in the U.S. I was traveling with my husband and two teenagers and it was our first visit in this part of the world. We chose it precisely because it offered something radically different from what we have experienced in the past. Having been to thirteen foreign countries and 27 U.S. states, I'm always looking for something new.

Tall Timber did not disappoint. Our cabin, Mallard Rock, was clean, comfortable and afforded us outstanding views of the lake from the house and back deck. Even better, our cabin faced directly west giving us the best sunset views every day.

Kayaking on the lake was great fun, and so much easier than kayaking on the ocean! Getting up close to the jumping fish, ducks, loons and the water lilies made me glad to be alive.

So much unspoiled beauty was almost overwhelming. But when we got a little tired of outdoor actives our cabin had reliable Wi-Fi. In other words, a perfect balance of access to pristine nature and technology. Perfect!

Treat yourself to dinner at the lodge if you are in the mood for an excellent, special meal. Their menu is as large and varied as their food is good. The service was terrific as well.

Thank you for staying with us recently, and you definitely came a long way to get here!

This part of New Hampshire and New England offers something that you often can't find in many other places - tranquility is the word that comes to mind, and it appears to be something that you were looking for when you came here. We're glad that we didn't disappoint when it came to this.

Mallard Rock is a special cabin to experience Back Lake from, and it sounds as though the local wildlife were definitely participating in this too. Throw in the delectable meals from the Rainbow Grille, and it's a pretty good place to be.

Thank you again for staying with us and we hope to have you back again when you're in our part of the country in the future.

We had an excellent stay. The cabin was roomy and clean. Staff is very friendly. Boats are priced right. Fishing was great for 13 year old son that couldn't get enough. Food was excellent. Highly recommend. Also saw a huge bull moose just off the road. Did some fly fishing with local guide Dave. Perfect place for us for a 3 night stay.

Room Tip: We were in Tamarack (#6) with 2 adults and 2 teens. Plenty of room for all. Wifi in lodge office...

Thank you again for staying with us recently.

Sounds as though you had the full north country experience while you were with us - some fly fishing with our guide Dave, meals at the Rainbow Grille, boats, and most importantly, a bull moose in your travels. We're glad that you had a nice slice of what our area has to offer travelers and we hope to have your family back again in the future.

Our one night stay at tall timbers lodge could not have been better. 3 children wanted to go to north woods and look for moose and they were not let down. We stayed in spruce, cabin 7, and it was extremely clean and well situated. We had breakfast in the lodge, rainbow grille and it was incredibly delicious. Would definitely recommend tall timbers to anyone and we are also considering staying a week next summer.

Thank you again for including us on your northern New England itinerary, and we're glad that you were able to enjoy a small slice of Tall Timber and the wildlife in Pittsburg while you were with us.

Moose sightings have been less frequent this summer, so it sounds like you did well in your moose encounters while you were here, and hopefully you can stay longer when you visit us next time.

We just returned from our 4th visit to Tall Timber lodge. Our visit was once again amazing. My children love to fish from the docks, go out on the lake with the pedal boats, or even a kayak (supplied by the lodge). There is always something to do and is perfect for kids. We have 3 children (8,12,15) and they can each do their on thing or be together. If they aren't fishing they are swimming, and back lake is the perfect place for everything. Tall Timber lodge has an amazing staff, they are very helpful and pleasant. Anything you need just ask. We stayed in White Birch and love it, very spacious, it has a full kitchen with all the utensils and dishes included. There is plenty of space for the five of us and it is perfectly located near the canoe launch and swimming area. A grill and fire pit are just steps away from the porch and the lake, which make the view at night fantastic. Nothing beats a sunset over back lake while sitting around a camp fire, the stars are amazing and the sounds of the loons are peaceful. We fished the CT river and hiked the Cohos Trail. Caught and released lots of fish, and the water temp was perfect. I cannot say enough positive things about Tall Timber Lodge, it is a gem, and truly special. Breakfast at the Rainbow Grille is amazing, the food is fantastic. We also ordered from the tavern and food is to die for. If you go to the bar, make sure you ask for Tanya, she is best bartender ever! Can't wait to return, our family has made so many memories here, memories to last a lifetime. Tall Timber Lodge has become a family tradition, one that I hope my children continue with their children.

Thank you once again for returning to stay with us last week. We're glad that everyone in your family had a good time, had plenty to do, and experienced some of the things that help make our part of New Hampshire special.

We're also happy that your family made some good memories while you were here too - that's what family vacations should be about! I'll pass along your kind comments to Tanya - yes, she's a wizard with a mixer in her hand!

We just returned from our 4th visit to Tall Timber Lodge and once again it was a wonderful vacation. The addition of a Gluten Free menu was such a wonderful surprise and made the trip even better. There were numerous and very tasty options on this menu and I recommend it even for folks who don't have to eat gluten free. The breakfasts were hearty and tasty and we spent a few nights in the tavern as well.

I recommend staying in Aspen if you can. The cabin has everything you need, plus the whirlpool tub and it is pet friendly. Our golden retriever loves coming to Tall Timber and we love how welcoming everyone is of our pup.

Finally, the fishing last week was fantastic on the CT river. We caught (and released) a large number of fish and the river temp was perfect at about 60 degrees.
I can't say enough positive things about this gem of a lodge and restaurant. Thank you from an amazing visit.

Room Tip: all of the cabins are wonderful - i prefer aspen which is on the road side of the property, but it i...

Thank you Mariah for returning to stay with us once again. We're glad that you enjoyed Aspen and also the new gluten free portion of the Rainbow Grille menu - it has definitely become more popular with our guests lately.

That's great that you had a good time on the river - the fishing has been very good, and it's always better when you have a guide like Angus to help you out along the way.

We look forward to hosting you again next summer - we'll try to make sure the trout cooperate too!
