A fun excursion and picnic to this island, ten miles out and another time and world. Run by a church trust, this is idyllic for reading, sitting and looking out to sea from the hotel porch.

Our conference group took this cruise and it was quite enjoyable. But, the buffet offered no local seafood - just barbequed chicken, pulled pork & hot dogs - hardly what I'd consider to be representative of the area food.

We took the Heritage boat to the islands. Drew the capt.. did a narration of all the points of interest on the way out and back. Ask him questions and he's happy to let you know about other things that have happened and seen in his many years as capt.

Take the Oscar Laighton and stop on Star Island for a guided tour and learn about the history of the island. Sit on a rock overlooking the ocean or stop in the hotel for an ice cream or lime ricky and sit for a bit in one of the rocking chairs on the expansive hotel porch.

We booked our tour through Uncle Oscar Island Cruises. We live closer to Rye than to Portsmouth and the cost was almost 1/2 what the Portsmouth company charged. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful island. The Captain of the small ferry (20 passenger max) was very informative both on the ship and the island. I would highly recommend visiting Star Island and use Uncle Oscar if that's closer to you. My daughter and I created some wonderful memories on the Island. We brought a picnic lunch with us but you can eat at the hotel on the island if you choose.
