“Back in the old days...”

First time in B&B. Loved its location, deco and style. Hosts Russ and his wife were very friendly, breakfast was great (though my boyfriend found it like plastic). Bed is super comfortable, with complimentary sherry and WIFI.

What we don't like about the room:
1. Bathroom is tiny, shower is too small that you can hardly turn around.
2. Heater gave noises at night.
Thinking about the houses were built in early 19th century, this is understandable.

I personally found the room is a bit pricey but it was definitely worth the experience!! Don't forget to try their big selection of tea!

Room Tip: First floor in the main house is full of flavor of old New England. Room on the second floor of the...

I always tell our guests that nothing says "old building" like steep, narrow stairs, but undersized bathrooms may come in a close second. I'm glad the reviewer is sensitive to the limitations of a 200 year old building in a historic zone. If anyone out there has any clever solutions for knocking the shampoo over with your elbow every time you turn around we would be delighted to entertain them!

This was our second time at the Martin Hill Inn and we loved it even more this time around! Stayed in the noonday suite which is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. The staff is so pleasant and even let us check in a little early. The breakfast was delicious!! You can't beat the price here, and it is quite close to downtown Portsmouth. You could walk, or take your car to shop/eat in the downtown area. If you like B&Bs I don't doubt that you'll enjoy your stay here. We'll be back!

Wonderful Inn close to center of Portsmouth. About a 10 minute walk. Very lovely room and comfortable bed. Owners and staff very welcoming. They are so accommodating. Breakfast was perfect. Baked apple, french toast, bacon. Will definitely go back.

We just returned from a very enjoyable stay in Portsmouth, enhanced by the Martin Hill Inn. We were a little amazed to learn that our hosts had only been with the Inn for a couple weeks!! They certainly landed on their feet. Our room was very comfortable and while we couldn't use the "sunroom" because of the cold, it would be very nice in warmed temps. The breakfasts were wonderful - a fruit course followed by quiche and bacon one morning and Blueberry/Pecan French toast and sausage another. Our room was very clean and roomy with a sitting room, too. We'd definitely return for another stay.

Just returned from an overnight at the Martin Hill Inn with my husband and our friends. This Inn is very nice, very clean and the new owners were very nice and hospitable.. It changed hands a few weeks ago and the new owners seem to be doing a great job so far! We stayed in Ranger which is located on the first floor of the main house-across from the dining area right by the front door. But all was quiet and we were not disturbed nor did we hear any comings and goings during the night. Breakfast this morning was delicious-Blueberry baked French Toast-delicious and a very good serving size. You certainly get a good value as well for the breakfast portion of your bed and breakfast stay. I would highly recommend this Inn and would stay again. It's about a 10 minute walk to town-just a bit out of the way of the main downtown area but certainly a pretty easy walk!

Room Tip: We had Ranger and enjoyed it. Nice cozy feel.

Is this true? This was a first rate operation when I visited in January. It was VERY CLEAN and well run, spotless and professional. The food was good, too. I'd definitely consider it for a return visit.

The Martin Hill Inn has indeed changed hands, and I know this because my wife Meg and I are the new owners. Margot is a tough act to follow, but we are trying our best to retain all the best parts of the Martin Hill Inn experience while adding on a few little perks. We are biased, but we also think the Inn is a great place to stay. Looking forward to your next visit.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in October and had a very enjoyable visit. The owner, Margot, was extremely helpful, the room was lovely and quaint, and the communal breakfast was both delicious and convivial. Being only a 10 to 15 minute walk to downtown was a bonus as we like to dump our car and then go by foot. Portsmouth is a lovely historic town, and we would strongly recommend at this B&B if you are visiting the area.
