“Such a huge disappointment for a Sheraton property”
Reviewed 30 August 2011

We stayed here as part of a 4-night package (2 nights Boston Sheraton, 2 nights here). Other than having an excellent location just at the edge of downtown Portsmouth, I cannot say anything positive about this property. As a Starwood Preferred Guest Gold member, I expect some preferred treatment when I stay at Starwood Hotels, but it is hard to fathom how my room could have been an upgrade from a standard room.

The hotel is dated. This property apparently hasn't been refreshed in quite some time. The door to our room (#254) said it was an SPG room. It was an odd-shaped corner room facing the front parking area. Maybe it was larger than the other rooms, but that was the only plus about it. Unfriendly, dated decor and bad feng shui pervaded the room. The bathroom was long, awkward and looked like it belonged in a Motel 6. The biggest disappointment, however, was the bed. I usually love Sheraton beds. This was definitely not the typical Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed--it was a cheap, bouncy mattress that gave me two mediocre nights of sleep.

We only ate one meal, the first morning's breakfast, at the hotel and quickly learned that we should spend our money elsewhere. I ordered the lobster omelette. It was expensive and awful: the eggs were overcooked, the lobster was chewy and didn't taste very fresh. My partner's breakfast (Eggs Benedict with Crab) wasn't much better. The F&B manager should be fired.

On the plus side, Portsmouth and the nearby NH & ME coast are quite lovely to visit. Thankfully, we enjoyed the time out of the hotel enough to not be dragged down by a depressing, lackluster hotel.

Dear CatskillMountainMan,

Please accept our sincere apologies that your recent stay fell short and was a disappointment for you and your partner. We appreciate that you took the time to provide us with this feedback and additionally the detailed information you provided gives us a chance to correct these issues as soon as possible.

In regards to the quality of sleep, we are deeply sorry you were not comfortable. Please let us assure you that we do have the standard Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bedding in our guest rooms but that we will certainly check on the status of our mattress in room 254 to ensure it is up to standards.

In regards to the food and beverage experience here, this is indeed unusual for our restaurant which prides itself on a superb dining experience. We will be sure to share this feedback with our F&B team in order to improve upon our quality assurance process.

We understand that this experience with us fell short and hope to have another opportunity to welcome you to Portsmouth and show you what a true service oriented hotel we are.

With Warm Regards,
Hotel Management

I used my Starwood Points to stay here.

The hotel is in a great location. Within walking distance of tons of shops and restaurants. Overall the hotel is just nice. It seems a little worn and not squeeky clean. But I wouldn't say dirty either ..just little things that weren't perfect. They probably need new wallpaper, drapes, etc. The rooms are spacious and they have the nice Westin bedding. Parking was easy and only $10 which wasn't too bad.

We upgraded to the Club level and the club rooms is really small. The first night it was so crowded that we decided not to spend any time but we did grab breakfast in the morning and it was much better. Just not your typical "pretty/relaxing" club type room.

I would probably stay here again but I am not sure it was worth the catagory of points through Starwood. I might have been better off to pay the rate here.

We booked here as a bit of a last-minute reservation as we went to the Air Show, and this was the only place that had room left. We stayed on their Club Level. The hotel has a wonderful location, right in town/by the river, across the street from the Isle of Shoals Steamship and 3 minutes on foot from the Portsmouth Harborside Ferry Tours and close to shops. You do have to pay for parking, and if you park in the garage, WATCH YOUR STEP going into the hotel, I tripped and scraped my foot, but didn't fall and am fine. The room was on the top (5th) floor and beautifully furnished, along with the halls and lobby, though hotel was very cold due to ac so bring a sweater! Club Level gets you a nice breakfast room with eggs and bacon or sausage, juice, toast, etc, everything except cream cheese! Beds are very comfy, beautiful patterned comforters, very warm, can open the window a bit for fresh air a huge bonus, and their bath products are GREAT , the conditioner actually conditions and the body lotion smells great and is the perfect consistency, and you get a little scrub puff way to go Sheraton!!! I've stayed at tons of hotels, and this was only the second with decent bath products and is by far the best!!! Their Harbor Edge restaurant has great food, AAA was right, I loved their chowder, and they cut up my lobster on request so I didn't have to struggle. Note is is pricey, but worth it if you want to have a nice white-tablecloth meal with a view. Room with king-sized bed is a bit small, but seemed very clean. Staff was very pleasant. Oh, room had mini-fridge/bar.

Room Tip: Can recommend club level.

We stayed at the Sheraton Portsmouth NH , Aug 18 th ! The location is excellent but could use a little updating . We were on the club floor level , evening attenant was so sweet and were quite surprised with the breakfast room attendant ( noticed by 2 other couples that mentioned it too ) that she seemed not very friendly & that we were putting her out ! Overall a great stay and we will defiantly stay at this hotel again !

We stayed at the Portsmouth Sheraton with our friends and family for our recent August wedding. We reserved 3 townhouses and our other guests stayed in the hotel rooms/suites. I am reviewing the townhouses only, as I did not have a chance to see the other rooms.

Overall we were satisfied with our stay. The location of the Sheraton is perfect and allowed our guests to explore Portsmouth (Market Square) on foot.

The townhouses themselves were a bit of a disappointment, especially for the price. Although very spacious and clean, the decor was tired and the kitchenettes old. The appliances in the kitchen were at least 15 years old and the lighting and cabinetry hadn't been updated since the early 90s. The bathrooms also needed updating as well.

Overall, our experience with the staff was pleasant. We had a few room service deliveries (champagne, etc.) which were all well presented and the staff even made adjustments to their cleaning schedule to allow us to check in an hour early.

If you choose to stay in a townhouse, please know that they face a main road which is a truck route for the sand & gravel company nearby. The noise from the trucks is quite loud in the morning and could be disruptive to anyone who wants to sleep in.

Also, if you plan to park at the Sheraton, there is a $20 per car, per night fee that gets added to your bill at the end of your stay. However, the Sheraton wi-fi is complementary and very easy to use!

I would recommend staying at the Sheraton, but encourage the Sheraton Management team to make some much needed updates to the townhouses, as they do not match their $300+ room rates.

Dear Travelkimba,

Please allow us to express our gratitude for the time you took to provide us with valuable feedback. We have heard your comments regarding the townhouses and will take the time to review with our Executive Committee members and ownership. We are sorry that these rooms did not meet your expectations. There is a parking charge at the hotel of $10 per night per car for self parking and $15 per night per car for valet parking. Our apologies if this was not communicated to you until your departure. While the parking information is included on our confirmation emails we will also be sure to review the check in process with our team to ensure they are making this clear at that time.

We are very pleased to hear that our staff was pleasant and went out of their way to make you comfortable.

Thank you for your candid comments. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Warm Regards,
Hotel Management
