“Great Location for an Authentic Olde B&B.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2008

Excellent location: Right next to the "mini-Williamsburg" of Strawbery Banke, and in an "old enough" house that we really felt a part of it all. Close enough to restaurants and the rest of Portsmouth that you don't need to drive, yet far enough from the "center of the action" for peace and quiet.

My husband I stayed at the Inn this past weekend and truly enjoyed our stay. The location is perfect if you enjoy walking. We didn't need to get in the car at all during the course of the weekend. Restaurants, coffee shops, and little stores are all close by. Sally was a wonderful host. Breakfast was amazing. Her homemade bread was delicious.

Our room was a nice size although there was very limited closet space. There was a stall shower which can be annoying but the room and the entire Inn were extremely clean. My only complaint was the location of our room which was right next to the front door. When other guests were coming and going it was a bit noisy when the old door was being shut but we didn't spend much time in our room and didn't feel the need to ask for a room change.

We enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay again at the Inn at Strawberry Banke.

My boyfriend and I just returned from Portsmouth yesterday. We spent 2 nights at the Inn at Strawbery Banke for our 5 yr anniversary.
We loved it! The location is perfect-- so close to the water and the center of town.
The decor is very comfortable and classic B&B-- beautiful rugs and hard wood floors. It smells wonderful thanks to Sally (the innkeeper) and her good cooking.
Our room (#4) was up a very steep set of stairs (keep this in mind if you have heavy bags or a bad back), it was spacious and very quaint. Classic shutters on the windows, a big closet and the bed was really comfortable! The room was chilly during the day but cozy warm at night.
The first morning we had homemade sourdough blueberry pancakes and sausage-- it was the best breakfast I have ever had!!
Unfortunately, our flight left too early the next morning to enjoy a hot breakfast but Sally was so nice that she packed us muffins and apples to go!
Sally's dogs were adorable and friendly as was the other staff member (don't know her name) - they really added to the experience but we never felt like we were being watched or hovered over. We had a really late night one night out at the bars but no one seemed to mind-- and we never heard a peep from the other guests except for the showers going in the morning.
We can't wait to go back and stay there again. Thank you Sally!

The Inn is in a wonderful location. Close to the waterfront and downtown but on a quiet side street. The common areas and breakfast room are lovely. Breakfast was served from 8-9 each morning and was very good. Sally is an excellent baker and an affable hostess. We stayed in Room #7 which had a very small bathroom and somewhat awkward layout given that the sink and vanity were across the room outside of the bath. The water pressure and temperature in the shower were very good. There was a well-functioning if unattractive a/c unit in the window. The bed was very comfortable and extra pillows and blankets were provided. I would probably stay there again but would request Room #6 or #4 which both appeared to have larger bathrooms. Room #5's bathroom is across a hallway from the bedroom which might be inconvenient to some. The stairs to the second floor are quite steep. The bathrooms all appeared to be very cheaply done with dated 70s/80s fixtures that do not match the lovely period decor of the rest of the Inn. A more conscientious remodel of the bathrooms would certainly add to the charm of this property. Sally has two dogs on the premises. Children under ten not permitted.

The Inn at Strawberry Banke was a great base for visiting Portsmouth. The location is very central, right beside the museum and a short walk from the centre of town. Service was friendly and unobtrusive and the breakfasts were lovely - freshly made and substantial with great coffee, served in the light and airy breakfast room overlooking the garden. The rbedoom was simply furnished but very comfortable, and the bathroom was clean and everything worked. There was no TV in the room but there was a nice living room with a TV and an endless supply of freshly-baked biscuits.
The only drawback was the roadworks right outside that started at 7am and made the road impassable, but hopefully they're finished now. I would definitely stay there again.

My fiancé and I went to Portsmouth for our fifth year anniversary in October. We LOVED the Inn at Strawberry Banke. The location was fantastic! It was a quick walk to all the restaurants and shops. You could not be in a more central location. The breakfast was lovely and served with a smile. The owners were friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The mattresses and pillows were a plus. The shower was a little bipolar with its water temperature but it was funny. The brewery had good food and a good atmosphere. Be sure to ask about the late night burgers served in the refurbished rail car.....you won't regret it! Portsmouth is a great town....enjoy!

Me and my wife had a single night at this B&B in the heart of Portsmouth and next to the popular Strawbery Banke Museum. Its location is its strongest feature, as the Inn itself was a bit rundown and in disrepair. The first impression you get is walking into someone's living room, full of old books, old (but not necessarily antique) furniture, and walls that could use a new coat of paint.

Our room, one of the larger the Inn has to offer, was nicely furnished with a mix of new and old furniture. We especially enjoyed the more modern four-poster bed and the soft pillows. Linens and towels were clean and soft as well. But the walls showed cracks and water stains, the fireplace was boarded up, and the toilet would run off and on all night. The shower curtain also had some mold on it, but the rest of the bathroom was clean and bright. The floors, although antique and rustic, had seen better days and need to be refinished someday soon.

The second best part of our stay (outside of the Inn's central location) was the breakfast in the morning. The blueberry pancakes were delicious, and the innkeepers were attentative to service needs. We both very much enjoyed our breakfast and the attention and wonderful demeanor of the innkeepers. They were always talkative and seemed like genuinely nice people.

I think this is a nice little inn with a lot of potential, if only the innkeepers paid some attention to sprucing up the rooms with a fresh coat of paint, ensured all of the plumbing was in good working order, and paid some attention to the deteriating building the inn is housed in.
