“Fresh Seafood”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Fresh, fresh, fresh, seafood and at least 8 items that are what they call the healthy lifestyle. My husband started with fresh oysters that were delicious and then he had the sesame tuna which he really enjoyed. I had the lemon haddock from the healthy lifestyle section which was light and healthy! We ended our meal splitting a scoop of salted carmel ice cream which did not disappoint!

“Fish is fresh and delicious”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

My 22 yr old daughter and I went to Surf last night and had a delicious meal. There was a wait for a table so we opted for one of the available outside street side tables. The weather was pleasant, the view of Portsmouth is quaint and lovely, and we enjoyed the people watching. Cassandra was our waitress and she was excellent...friendly and attentive to our needs. We started with refreshing drinks and two small plates that were scrumptious....especially the scallops. The scallops were so fresh and sweet and the chef plated them with so many wonderful flavors of pumpkin, white bean purée, pancetta and sweet potato crisps...yum! (Most important....the scallops were so fresh and sweet!!!) We each had haddock entrees and both agreed...the haddock was so fresh and cooked perfectly. We ended the meal with "just a bite" desserts which were yummy and just enough to satisfy a sweet craving. I live on the coast and I think this is one of the best meals I've had this summer. I highly recommend Surf and most definitely will return again!

“A Local's Locale”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

We like to sit at the bar and have dinner here. We almost always share a shrimp cocktail, which is delicious. My husband loves the mussels and the oysters and a number of other items on the menu. We've pretty much had it all. What's great about this place, though, is the people who work there. They are very friendly, professional, efficient and CALM! They never appear flustered or too busy to acknowledge their customers, despite the fact that the place is usually packed. It's a favorite of ours.

“Horrid service, uninteresting food.”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

First, the view is absolutely spectacular. It might be worth it to go just for that if you haven't found any other spot to get a good view BUT that is the only reason to go.

The interior decor is incredibly dated. It is what people thought was "cool" in 2002 but really wasn't even cool then. Think of all the tacky parts of Miami Vice.

The service... oh boy the service... I have never been treated more poorly in a restaurant in my life, and I have never witnessed worse treatment of other customers in my life. This all occurred on a Wednesday when they were fairly quiet. Our waitress clearly felt that anyone sitting in her section was a burden. She was slow to take our drink order, she was slow to take our meal order, the only thing she was prompt at was taking care of the bill. It was not just our waitress. The manager (i think) came and removed the drink menu from our table without asking if we still needed it (and without saying a word to us) and she randomly closed a blind (eliminating the view, the only redeeming quality of the restaurant) that was in a position where no one could have been annoyed by it being open.

The food is fine, just totally uninteresting. No creativity of local ingredients while also no tradition. The menu is created by someone playing chef.

I wouldn't go to Surf again if it was free.

Hello Paul,
We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience. We’re taking the feedback you’ve given about the service seriously and are working with our staff to figure out what happened – we want our guests to enjoy their food at a relaxed pace and not feel rushed, but we also don’t want them to feel ignored. The same thing goes for the removal of the drink menu; we do our best not to interrupt our guests.
As for the food, what was it you ordered? The menu itself been prepared and tested by a team of experienced chefs who have opened a number of successful restaurants. If you weren’t happy with a particular dish, we would like to know which one and what it was you think could have been done better.
Your review says you’re in Philadelphia, but if you are ever back in the area, we’d like to invite you back. And when you come in, ask for Michael Buckley or Ian. Michael is the chef-owner and Ian is the general manager. They would be happy to speak to you about how we can make your experience better.
Sincerely,
The Surf Seafood Team
