“Noisy sports bar for 20 somethings and cheap drinkers”
3 of 5 bubbles Review of Tequila Jacks

Tequila Jacks
Ranked #149 of 201 Restaurants in Portsmouth
Description: Located on the corner of Daniel and Penhallow Streets, Tj's is a staple for locals and a favorite for the 25-35 crowd. With plenty of televisions to catch all of your favorite sporting events, a full bar, and 16 draught lines, it has something to offer everyone. Our menu changes quarterly, and we pride ourselves in using only local, fresh ingredients. Our food stretches beyond your typical "pub fare," and our staff is more than happy to help with special requests. We know most of our customers on a first name basis, and love celebrating with them or giving them an excuse to celebrate!

No question, TJ's has it's place in Portsmouth. It used to be a frat boy hang out with predictable testosterone flare ups, but has become inhabited by a slighter older 20 something crowd... hey, frat boys do grow up. The draw is cheap drinks - although not as cheap as the Daniel Street Tavern, just down the road - and the TVs. For the more elegant sports crowd, try The Page at the other end of town.

“Tequila Jack's has Morphed into TJ's and isn't Mexican anymore”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2011

This has to be the same place because of the address. My wife & I were visiting downtown Portsmouth at 7 pm on Friday of their Restaurant Week. All of the restaurants seemed to be so full they were spilling out into the street and the fastest seating we could find was 45 -60 minutes. Then we were reached the corner of Daniel St across from the Post Office. There were only 3 customers. My wife decided for us that the menu posted next to the entrance looked good and she wasn't waiting any longer. No one was standing by the "Please wait to be seated" sign so we walked up to the bartender and asked if they were serving food. He said, "Sure, have a seat." I was ready to turn around and leave but my wife was already on a stool reading the menu. It's awfully hard to admit this but SHE WAS RIGHT. I ordered a Steak Bomb (which I had never heard of and which turns out to be somewhat like a Philly steak) and she chose a fish taco. They were both pretty good but what took our breath away was the potato chips. They were fresh potatoes sliced extremely thin and served right out of the deep fryer. We live near Saratoga Springs, NY and, according to the local Chamber of Commerce, that's where the potato chip was invented. As described by the C of C, we were served the identical dish as those first potato chips. They were absolutely "to die for." The bar was topped with copper sheeting which gave it a good retro look and the bartender became our good friend before we finished our meal. We've still got two more days to sample the Portsmouth restaurants but on our next trip we're definitely going to try those fresh potato chips again.
