Description: Located just two blocks down from Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jumpin' Jay's is a local foodie enclave serving refined seafood in a sleek restaurant setting. The quality of fare is unsurpassed, with fish arriving daily from local fisherman as well as some exotic catches from locations such as New Zealand and Ecuador. Four to six varieties of fish appear on the ever-changing "Catch of the Day" menu, complimented by your choice of gourmet sauce. Our raw bar offers an extensive variety of shellfish found in New Hampshire. Our specialties menu offers more traditional flavor, including Maine Crab Cakes, Haddock Piccata and our popular Linguine in White Clam Sauce. The atmosphere is casually hip, with no pretense. Reservations encouraged. Open seven nights a week.

“Jumpin for Joy at Jumpin Jays”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2011

My wife and I visited this restaurant during our most recent vacation to New England.
The restaurant was recommended to us by the owner of The Governor's House Inn (a great place to stay whilst visiting Portsmouth).
We had a reservation and despite the place being incredibly busy, we were seated within a few minutes of arriving.
The menu offered a broad choice of seafood from both its "raw bar" and cooked dishes. These were complemented by meat, poultry and vegetarian alternatives - the wine list was extensive with many of the wines available by the glass.
Now to the food!!
We ordered calamari and fresh oyster appetisers - both were wonderful!
My wife had the Haddock Piccata entree, she says it was "to die for".
I had the Diver's Scallops with a lobster sauce - this is without doubt the best fish course I have ever eaten.
The service was prompt and attentive, the prices although not cheap offer great value for the quality of food presented.
Our only regret, is that we visited here on the final night of our stay in Portsmouth - if we had come here on the first night, I doubt we would have gone anywhere else.
We are sure to return here during our next visit to New Hampshire.

“Better than expected.”

Great fresh seafood. Barely adequate wine list. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Good food, but the lack of quality wine choices detracted from the experience.

“an excellent lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2011

We walked by this restaurant several times during our stay in Portsmouth. It is located right on the edge of the downtown area. It is decorated in a way that sort of resembles a 1950s diner yet somehow attempts to be a very upscale restaurant as well. Although the description is a bit odd, they somehow manage to pull it off successfully. We arrived for lunch at 11:30, when they opened. Service was prompt and friendly. I had the scallop and bacon pasta. When it arrived, it appeared to be nearly drowning in what appeared to be a watery sauce. Yet as I ate, it became clear that it was all perfectly balanced. The scallops were excellent - seared and flavorful - and the bacon, fresh tomatoes, and other ingredients complemented it beautifully. My wife had a salad nicoise with searted tuna, which was also beautifully presented. The menu was relatively small and manageable, with a lot of fresh fish choices. Several folks we met in Portsmouth spoke highly of the place. We would certainly check it out for dinner next time we're in town. Very reasonable prices for the quality of what you get, at least at lunchtime.

“Party of 12 handled perfectly! Great food, great value!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2011

We had a birthday party here with twelve family members. The service was outstanding, the staff was very helpful, and the event was well received by all. We called ahead, and they were well prepared for us when we got there.

The menu is outstanding, fish right off the docks of Portsmouth! Everyones meal was presented well and done to perfection. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

“Fish doesn't get any fresher than this place serves it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2011

I visited the restaurant twice within a 3 month time period of visiting Portsmouth and found both the tuna and shrimp to be excellent. Having chosen to have the fish served on one of the mixed green salads, it was a large piece of tuna and many shrimp over a creative salad.

Although a little pricey when served just over a salad, the fish entrees were well worth it and it is a casual atmosphere with a pleasing staff. The table of four next to me were raving about their dishes which ranged from scallops to swordfish to halibut.
