Downtown Brick Oven Pizza and Pub is part of the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. restaurant - the entrance is actually around the corner from the Market Street entrance to the Gas Light Co. restaurant and downstairs in the basement. The restaurant is exactly what the name suggests - pizza and pub!

Looking for a break from seafood we went in here and weren't disappointed. The menu is full of pizzas, calzones, salads, and other tasty things. We only tried the pizza (they have a bunch of pre-made styles or you can design your own) but it was really delicious and tasted just like it had come out of the brick oven. Service was good even on a busy Friday night.

The place gets very, very crowded on weekend nights, so either come early or (especially if you have a larger party) be prepared to wait. If you have a smaller party of 2 or 3 you're likely to get seated fairly quickly, but they've stashed some tables in some tight spaces around the bar and you may find yourself dining with the overflow at the bar! It was worth the food, though.

Tip: if you can't decide on what kind of pizza to get or you want to try multiple kinds but don't want to order 4 or 6 pizzas, they will let you order toppings by halves, even of the specialty kinds. This let us try a bunch of stuff without ending up with a ton of food.

As the title states this is not a typical Greek pizza place which dominates the New England area. I do want to make it clear that I am not critizing Greek style pizza as we have several excellent places out here in central Mass.

This place in my opinion provides a more traditional brick oven Italian style pizza. The crust is fairly thin but not as thin as you may find in the North End of Boston so beware that their pizza can be very filling. We love it and always make it a point to go there whenever we visit Portsmouth.

The pizza selection was good with some creative topping combos. The service was good, our waitress was friendly and engaging without being overbearing. My only complaint was when we entered the resturant, the carpeting stuck terribly. It kind of grossed me out before we even sat down to eat. Everything else looked clean, but they may want to consider an update in the carpeting.

I've been to the Street level, casual with good food, and the lower pizza pub, even more casual with great pizza and try the chicken tortellini salad; best in town. Servers are all nice and friendly. In the summer, a nice deck for drinks and entertainment. Its the best place for varied options in food and atmosphere in town !
