“Victorian with a Vibe”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

The Hotel Portsmouth was a true port in the storm after driving through a torrential downpour from Portland, ME. This beautifully renovated Victorian is period perfect on the outside and a refreshing mix of modern and mid-century on the inside. Both AM and PM concierges were gracious, hip and accommodating. A large umbrella was loaned to us for a refundable deposit. Our room, 110 was spotless, delightfully designed and quiet. Walking distance to Jumping Jae's Fish, we enjoyed a very satisfying meal and romantic saunter back to the hotel. This property definitely offers more Portsmouth vibe and value than nearby hotel chains.

The Hotel Portsmouth was recently recommended to us, so we gave it a try.
I was able to get the last available room, booking the same day we were to arrive. The room was the Garden Suite, which is the hotels only pet friendly room. I was skeptical, but we booked anyway.
We arrived shortly before the 3 p.m. checkin time and our room was ready. The room was spotless and also had a small private courtyard with a fe chairs. the chairs in the courtyard were spotless as well. they must clean them prior to guest arrival. Every room had an iPad-mini, loaded with folders for various activities, such as lunch, dinner, breweries and so forth. I thought this was a very modern approach to what's in the area!
The staff is very friendly and accommodating, we felt like we were staying at a friends house rather than at a hotel.
The hotel was built in the mid 1800's and was renovated this past spring. There was no street noise whatsoever, they also have private on site parking for 1 vehicle, no valet hustles to deal with.
In the past we generally stay at one of the larger well know chain hotels, which are much pricier than THP. This will be our new hotel of choice when we visit Portsmouth.

It is great when visiting a historic town to stay at a historic Inn that is central to everything. Walking in the front entrance reminds me of the Inn from the Bob Newhart show. It is a nicely renovated with some of the quirks of an old building and lots of character. The service by the staff was great. The rooms have great beds and toiletries which is critical. The morning breakfast is adequate but nothing special. You can walk through the old town to all the key restaurants or drive to the beach, tour the breweries. Good hotel system communications, upgrades, and billing. I will be back.

Room Tip: Avoid lower level two rooms

We booked The Hotel Portsmouth for a quick one night getaway. It's a beautiful old Victorian building, recently renovated and open since April 2014. We stayed in Rm. 101, which was advertised as a Deluxe Queen on their website. The room was smaller than pictured, which we thought was a bit misleading. We commented on this at check out and were told the size of the DQ rooms varies. However, it was clean and nicely decorated. I agree with other posters, the A/C was noisy. The A/C unit was top venting, which caused cool air to blow under the blind when it was lowered for privacy. A front venting unit would be better. The breakfast was ok...could use more variety. Would have liked to get a cup of coffee to take back to the room in the morning...to go cups would be nice. Need to put a rubber mat in the shower, and also consider a shower grab bar for safety. Would probably stay here again but ask for a larger Deluxe Queen room.

3 Days of relaxing stay..........We have read most of the reviews for this Hotel and we agree....It is a very nice Hotel and we enjoyed our stay. The location is excellent for Portsmouth, as the area is quiet, and the downtown is just a short walk. The downside of our stay is the following:
1. The air conditioner in the room is very noisy. I talked to the front desk in the morning about changing to a room with a quieter air conditioner, but never heard back. He did say that they had someone look at it and made adjustments, but it never quieted it down. When we were checking out, I was asked about our stay, and I said it was "O-Kay?" The lady at the desk asked me why, just "O-Kay"...I told her I had trouble sleeping because of the "noisy" air conditioner. Another couple overheard my comment and they confirmed the same for their room...a noisy air conditioner
2. The hard-boiled eggs that were chilled had a "distinct" flavor that was not appealing...
3. When I made the reservation, I specifically mentioned it was a 30th Wedding anniversary, and it would be nice if something special could be done at our arrival...(BTW...I would have paid for a bottle of wine, flowers...etc) Just seemed like this Hotel had that type of class....
Not quite sure we will be back...

So many nice things to say about this hotel! The other reviews cover many of the things we found great about our stay here. Here a few of our impressions:

1) Not. a. chain. That alone is pretty awesome. A lot of character to the building, including some sitting rooms that we unfortunately didn't have time to explore.
2) Interesting, clean and modern rooms. We had the deluxe king on the 2nd floor, and it was incredibly quiet and peaceful.
3) Private parking. We only used our car twice during our stay, and that was to visit Maine. Otherwise, the quick walk from hotel to downtown was all we really needed. That was great. Usually when we vacation, we have to drive all the time, but not here. It was liberating.

Anyway, this was our first visit to Portsmouth, and we will be back in no small part because of this hotel. I'm convinced if we stay anywhere else in the area, it would be just a disappointment after our experience here.

Room Tip: No refrigerator, so plan accordingly.

No words can describe....the finest in every way. Ambiance and service was excellent. My bed was a bit firm for my taste but that is a personal preference. I would definitely stay here again anytime I am in Portsmouth.
