“Great place to stay in Downtown Portsmouth”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

This is a very cool hipsterish place that really works in Downtown Portsmouth. It has a very nice vibe that you don't get in new "Boutique" hotels. I would highly reccomend for a stay in Portsmouth. Make sure you let them know if you need a room that is accessible for stroller or wheelchairs as some floors have stairs even after the elevator.

The Hotel Portsmouth is a great alternative to staying in a chain hotel. It is small, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable with helpful hints about the area. They even have pocket-sized maps of the city with restaurants, shops and historic sites highlighted. Our room was very nice and the bathroom was well laid out with the sink separate from the shower, tub and toilet. The breakfast food was sufficient: fresh fruit, cereal, bagels, coffeecake, yogurt, juice and plenty of coffee. I have read that some reviewers have been bothered by the air conditioning units, yes they are noisier than window units, but we considered it 'white noise'. Our only complaint was that the bed pillows were too fluffy. There was no way to beat them into any sort of shape to making sleeping on them pleasant. Because there were four of them, it would have been a nice touch if two were slightly less full of stuffing. Other than this small detail, the beds were very comfortable. We didn't have time to sit in the front rooms but they looked very inviting. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.

We spent two nights in August in this lovely hotel. Our king deluxe room was spacious and quiet: the bed was comfortable, the shower was good, the staff were friendly and helpful. We appreciated the filtered water and the iPad loaded with information about local attractions and restaurants. The continental breakfast was completely satisfactory and the location unbeatable: we parked our car int the hotel lot (free parking) and were able to walk to a variety of local attractions and restaurants, without moving our car.

A few easy changes would move our rating up from a 4 to a 5: the portable A/C unit cooled the room but was very noisy throughout the night; the only upholstered chair was too large for one person, but too small for two, making it impossible for a couple to enjoy comfortable seating for reading or watching a movie. Lighting in the room was dim, with no lamp adjacent to the one upholstered chair that was comfortable for reading: a lamp on the adjacent table or a floor lamp would have been a great addition to an otherwise well-furnished room.

We hope to return to Portsmouth and if we do, this hotel will be our first choice for comfortable and affordable lodging.

Room Tip: Our third floor, deluxe king room was spacious, comfortable, and quiet.

Hello Martso,
Thank you for your recent stay with us. We are happy to have received so many positives from your time with us. We wanted to let you know that we will be undergoing Phase II of our renovations here this winter and will be eliminating the portable AC units that we currently have. Quieter wall-through units will be in place for next summer. Additionally, we will be adding higher wattage bulbs to our rooms as they are replaced. We look forward to having you back again!
Best,
Doug

This hotel opened this past April and someone spent some money renovating this old house. It has unique old details but the rooms feel modern too. The bathroom was super cool! We had some questions about getting around and the staff was very helpful. It is in a convenient location to get to shops, restaurants and historical sites. We loved staying here. Next trip to Portsmouth, this will be our hotel!

The Hotel Portsmouth was a true port in the storm after driving through a torrential downpour from Portland, ME. This beautifully renovated Victorian is period perfect on the outside and a refreshing mix of modern and mid-century on the inside. Both AM and PM concierges were gracious, hip and accommodating. A large umbrella was loaned to us for a refundable deposit. Our room, 110 was spotless, delightfully designed and quiet. Walking distance to Jumping Jae's Fish, we enjoyed a very satisfying meal and romantic saunter back to the hotel. This property definitely offers more Portsmouth vibe and value than nearby hotel chains.

The Hotel Portsmouth was recently recommended to us, so we gave it a try.
I was able to get the last available room, booking the same day we were to arrive. The room was the Garden Suite, which is the hotels only pet friendly room. I was skeptical, but we booked anyway.
We arrived shortly before the 3 p.m. checkin time and our room was ready. The room was spotless and also had a small private courtyard with a fe chairs. the chairs in the courtyard were spotless as well. they must clean them prior to guest arrival. Every room had an iPad-mini, loaded with folders for various activities, such as lunch, dinner, breweries and so forth. I thought this was a very modern approach to what's in the area!
The staff is very friendly and accommodating, we felt like we were staying at a friends house rather than at a hotel.
The hotel was built in the mid 1800's and was renovated this past spring. There was no street noise whatsoever, they also have private on site parking for 1 vehicle, no valet hustles to deal with.
In the past we generally stay at one of the larger well know chain hotels, which are much pricier than THP. This will be our new hotel of choice when we visit Portsmouth.

It is great when visiting a historic town to stay at a historic Inn that is central to everything. Walking in the front entrance reminds me of the Inn from the Bob Newhart show. It is a nicely renovated with some of the quirks of an old building and lots of character. The service by the staff was great. The rooms have great beds and toiletries which is critical. The morning breakfast is adequate but nothing special. You can walk through the old town to all the key restaurants or drive to the beach, tour the breweries. Good hotel system communications, upgrades, and billing. I will be back.

Room Tip: Avoid lower level two rooms
