“Black day for the Black Trumpet (NH)”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

Came with high hopes. After all it is expensive and has a good reputation.
Sad to say the food was mediocre and unimaginative. About as good at any mid-priced hotel. The wine was expensive and served too cold. My glass and fork were both dirty, and that waiter was an exceptionally unhappy and humorless boy with a huge chip on his shoulder. Worst of all he was unhelpful and basically rude. Very disappointing. I will not go there again.

“Success Can Be a Problem”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

We'd eaten at the Trumpet several times and it's been good to great BUT it's now looking like a victim of its own success, too pricey for the quality.

The wait service was just OK (why does one have to ask for an additional cup of coffee? We finally gave up on asking for two). Better training and slightly more upscale uniforms to match the pricing would be nice. (People do tend to perform up to the standard of their dress).

$35 for the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu ($11 for a glass) reeks of a restaurant that's gotten a bit full of itself Come on. Considering that restaurants make a minimum 100% markup on wine, a lower-priced house offering would just make good common sense.

The olives, almonds are garlic were just as good as every other time we've been there, and the banana cake desert was great. But, the duck might as well have been old roast beef. I've rarely had worse duck. And, can we get some decent bread here, folks, considering the price of everything?

We're repeat visitors to Portsmouth, but we won't be back to the Trumpet. There are always younger--and pardon the pun, hungrier--restaurants out there who want to work for your business.

“Excellent Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2014

There are more restaurants in Portsmouth than meals to be consumed. Many are good. The Black Trumpet was great. We ate there twice in the nine nights we visited and were highly impressed each time. The meals were cooked to perfection, the wait staff highly professional and the restaurant ambiance serene. The first night I ordered a lamb shank that was cooked to tender perfection, removed from the bone and shaped in a roll with vegetables on a mound of fluffy, light, perfectly seasoned mashed parsnips - a great, healthier diversion from mashed potatoes. It was so delicious that I ordered the same meal during my second visit. Given all of the possible choices in this beautiful, walking friendly city, however short the visit, the Black Trumpet is a must.

“Great! Very accommodating!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

First of all our server was great! He was very enthusiastic and our requests weren't a burden at all. My mom has a lot of food allergies and they were very good about accommodating. They made her a different version of a drink she wanted and made sure she would be able to eat her food. Overall great food, atmosphere and service!
