“Best place in Portsmouth”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2012

This is the better of the two residence inn of Portsmouth it is short way from highway right next to red hook brewery short drive to movie theater and fox run mall. all the rooms are a good size but the two room option is the best option in Portsmouth small kitchen aria with dishwasher and table for 4. Pull out couch and chair in living aria with flat screen TV. two separate bedroom with queen beds and separate full baths I have always stayed on the 2nd or 3rd floor and noise has never been a problem. during the week they do have free apps/dinner (depending on day on which one, had chili one night, tacos another and pasta another) free wine and draft beer. several time they did have problems with the keg think the lines needed to be cleaned because it was producing a lot of head. Nice outside sitting aria with gas fire pit and gas stove that all gust can use also have a char coal grill you can ask to use. Every time we stay we go to a local BJ's grab some meat and grill it up. Nice way to have a cheep night free apps and beer and grilled meat. pool is indoors but it does get really hot and chlorine feel in air we usually open up a lot of the windows in pool aria within 5 min it is fine.

Room Tip: 2nd floor has the coin opp washing mac.

Location was easy to find. If you are going to stay here, ask the front desk if the higher floors are quieter than the first. Our first floor room was very noisy from our own air conditioning unit. The noise was loud in both the bedroom and the living area. View from first floor is mostly looking through high bushes and into the courtyard or parking area. The high thick bushes right outside the window made for a lack of security. Hotel hallways(walls and carpet) were not as clean as most Marriotts(stains on carpet and some liquid stains on the walls. The side entrance was full of dried grass clippings. Although it looks like they tried to update the hotel, it has an old feeling about it, and the room we stayed in was a bit musty. The free breakfast was not appealing, we chose to eat elsewhere. Dirty silverware was laying by the buffet style breakfast and the lighting made the food look grey. The size of the bedroom and suite was large. The pullout bed appeared worn. I think that the difference in enjoying the hotel is definitely the room you get. Check in early so you can get the best pick of room.

Room Tip: Call ahead and ask for a room that is not noisy and the view is not blocked.

This one of those where I wish I could give a 3 1/2. Hotel is in a good location, rooms are spacious, and they have some nice amenities (dinner - with draft beer during the week, breakfast with a few hot items, spacious rooms with refrig, stove, etc). Rooms seem a little older the some of the ones we have stayed in recently - but clean and pretty comfortable.

We had trouble with the AC during our stay, but they moved us to another room quickly and credited us with some Marriott points for our trouble, which was nice.

There were quite a lot of children staying at the hotel while we were there. I understand that there are a lot of service men's families staying with them while they work at the naval shipyards.

The hotel is centrally located in downtown Portsmouth nh. You are right downtown and can walk everywhere. We stay here with our kids 11 and 13. We usually get a 1 bedroom suite which is a decent size not huge. The hotel is pleasant. The front desk is very nice. The rest of the hotel service is okay. The hotel is fairly new and the lobby has a very nice appearance. I would recommend it for anyone travelling with a family who wants a suite.

Room Tip: Choose a room not over the street

Just returned from 2 nights. Our room was clean and very comfortable. They gave us a pack and play for our 5 month old, which was perfect. The hotel staff were pleasant and very accommodating. The pool was fun and clean, too.

The title of the review pretty much sums up my recent 3 day stay at the Residence Inn Portsmouth.

Pros:

Convenient location to I-95 and shopping malls
Located in quiet office park near Pease airport with grassy areas perfect for soccer, baseball, or generally burning off kids' energy
Right next to Red Oak Brewery, which has a nice brewpub for a convenient dinner
Plenty of free board games for family game night.

Cons:
Room smelled like carpet cleaner (but that is probably a good sign)
The indoor pool was GROSS. Filets weren't working, the water was cloudy, and there was floating hair everywhere.
They need to stock better snacks and sundries. Selection was nonexistent.

I've stayed at other Residence Inns in the MA/NH/ME region. This one was just ok. You can do better staying in downtown Portsmouth or Portland.
