“Our Perfect Summer Lake Experience”
Reviewed 30 August 2011

My husband and I are on the last day of a month long vacation at Old New England Village on Spofford Lake, NH. We are Vermonters who have moved away, and this place delights us. (This is our second summer here.) The experience is charming, reminding us both of childhood lake cottages. Raette Trombly, owner, is funny and sweet and always helpful. The cottages are older, clean, and steps from the sandy, gradual beach. We rented The Church (cottages are named after village buildings) which sleeps eight, so we had plenty of room for visiting family and friends. The beach isn't large but has kayaks available, shade, a floating raft to swim to, dock space for boats (my husband got his sailboat out of a friend's barn), and 2 fire rings for evening fires. We don't fish but folks in a neighboring cottage caught a large bass. The lake itself is wonderful, with clear, warm water, and the island in the picture is a state park and easy to kayak to. This isn't elegant living. It is much more fun than that. (The night before we flew in to NH we stayed at the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego with city and water views. These two places are very different and we liked Old New England Village better.)

If you're going to Lake Spofford, you should stay at the lake. The cabins at Old New England Village are individually themed (Village Hall, Church, Jail, etc.) and offer kitchen, stove, microwave, fridge. They have a beach and dock suitable for lounging, picnics, or launching into the lake in one of their kayaks. (They also have a paddle boat, but I would limit my exploring to short trips - it's pretty slow...)
Get up early when the lake is glassy-smooth and crstal-clear for a near-perfect lake kayaking experience.
