First let me say this is a very nice inn in a very good location (minutes from Keene, N.H., and Brattleboro, Vt.). We stayed in the king suite, which was very comfortable and romantic. Our room had a gas fireplace, which added to the ambience. The food is also very good (not outstanding).

The problem was the service. First off, I registered online for one of the special packages, a two-night stay which was to include champagne and flowers in the room upon arrival and one complementary dinner, for $550. Their records showed I had not ordered the package, and they were prepared to charge me $550 for the room and none of the frills (this makes no sense to me; if you are going to offer these extras with two nights' stay, they should be given automatically whether someone signs up for them or not). When I pushed back, I was told they would bring the champagne (which they did), but it was "too late to get you flowers." We were also given the complementary dinner.

A few other issues: On one of the two afternoons, they forgot to put out the afternoon tea and snacks. When we inquired, they brought it directly to our room -- which was very nice -- but the point is we shouldn't have had to ask. The next afternoon, we were kicked out of our rooms for two hours to make way for installation of Direct TV. We were allowed to go into another room -- which, again, was nice -- but, again, it's not the best way to treat a couple on a romantic weekend and spending $275 a night.

Bottom line: Very nice place, good food, good location, service marginal.

We pride ourselves on our excellent service here and were surprised to read this review. This amounts to several misunderstandings that we could have and should have rectified immediately. The Romance Package (which includes a substantial discount) was not booked by the guest so we were not prepared with the fresh flowers. The Direct TV installation was on an emergency basis because our cable company went bankrupt and we needed to have TV for our guests immediately. We did give these guests another room with a fireplace to use while the Direct TV was installed. We made that choice rather than have the entire inn with no TV signal. Tea was served to the guests in their room as part of our personal service, and could have been served in the parlor if we had known that the guests preferred to be served there.

We took a long weekend here recently and really enjoyed our stay. The people were very welcoming and friendly and also very helpful. We ate breakfast here on both mornings and enjoyed it very much. We also had dinner one night here and were pleasantly surprised by how interesting the menu was. My only complaint was that the coffee at breakfast was not very good because the water here was not very good.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was very good and the dining room had a lovely view. Our room however was disappointing. The sheets were a dingy gray. I'm pretty that sure at some time in history they were white. The blankets were visibly old and not in a charming way. The mattresses were old and very uncomfortable. The wall paper in the bathroom was peeling up at most seems. I expected more for the price.

Much as we hate to read a negative review it, this kind of feedback is useful to us. This room is slated for renovation in January and will receive a complete face lift!

We were happy to find a bed and breakfast that allows chldren. Rooms were clean and a nice size. Lots of water problems - water pressure and no water at certain times during the stay. Staff was apologetic but could have offered a little something for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the honest feedback; sometimes things happen that are out of our control and we do our best to rectify them. Because the water problems were intermittent, we weren't sure who was effected by them, and tried to make amends with everyone who had a problem. Obviously we missed this guest, and I have been in touch with her to try to make things right.

We discovered this elegant country inn online and, impressed by its attractive, information-rich website, booked a 4 night stay for late September.

The inn is conveniently located near Rte 91 in southern New Hampshire, less than 21/2 hours' drive from our home in Fairfield County, CT.

The main structure, which began as a farmhouse, has great bones. A spacious wing has been added, but you won’t feel relegated to second-class quarters should you choose a room there. In fact our room in the Wetherby Building was one of the most comfortable we’ve encountered in our travels. It was well furnished—complete with a gas fireplace and windowseat—and thoughtfully equipped with plenty of drawer space, sitting chairs, a desk, and (hooray!) 3 way lightbulbs for readers. (You can view inn rooms on the website, www.chesterfieldinn.com, or peek, as we did, since the innkeepers wisely keep the doors on unoccupied rooms open.)

When you’re not exploring the many outdoor or cultural activities in the region, you can kick back with all the creature comforts a modern-day traveler could need, including high speed wireless Internet in your room and afternoon tea and cookies.

Just as the inn’s physical plant is a seamless blend of classic farmhouse and timeless new construction, the staff offers professional service with a generous side of down-to-earth friendliness.

The room rate includes an excellent cooked-to-order breakfast that may well sustain you till tea time. Dinner service is available and we enjoyed several great meals from a thoughtfully designed menu that changes seasonally, with attractive presentation and attentive yet low-key service.

Even better, the Chesterfield Inn—so rich in creature comforts—also welcomes the four-legged variety. While we didn’t travel with our best friend on this trip, now that we’ve seen the place and met its welcoming staff, we’re looking to a return with our furkid in tow.
