“The best seafood in town, without a doubt.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2011

We've lived in New England most of our lives, and consider ourselves experts on what constitutes good in seafood restaurants. This place is tiny bit difficult to find, but is tucked away on the back side of Wolfeboro Bay, has indoor and outdoor seating and they will even accommodate your pet at an outdoor table. Wolfetrap is very informal, very laid back, very comfortable and as a rule, the service is excellent. Fried clams are to die for here: crispy, juicy, fresh, and absolutely not greasy. Our other favorite food here is the Bouillibaisse, which is a very generous serving and includes wonderful garlic toast. The ingredients vary with what's fresh on any given day, but include shrimp, mussels, scallops, haddock or sole, and is served in a seafood/garlic/tomato base that is just delicious. More than enough food for two to share and save room for their great desserts. The bartenders are great here; make a wonderful and generous martini and the staff is usually warm and friendly. We also love their heavy duty, well made tee shirts, both long and short sleeved, in a rainbow of colors....just the ticket to warm your shoulders and arms on a cool summer night, lakeside. Please remember that this is a very busy town "in season" and without a reservation, you may have to wait a while for a table. We have personally witnessed potential customers abusing the staff because they were asked to wait to be seated; come on folks, it's a vacation town! Ratchet it down a notch and relax; this place is worth the wait.

“Great Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2011

I seen an advertisement in a magazine for this place and it was delicious! The food was a bit pricey especially for the kids meal. $7 for any choice off the menu is a bit much for the little ones. They use a large sheet of paper over the tables for the kids to color on while waiting for there food!!The portions were good for the adult meals and the seafood was great. They have a few seats to sit outside and enjoy the bay. I would definitely return. I wish there sign out front was a little bigger we drove past it then had to turn around to find it!

“Updated review -- under new ownership (bad news)”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2010

Well, I hate to retract all the nice things I said last summer, but I just have to.

We ate at the "new" Wolfetrap a few nights ago, and there is nothing good to report.

The menu was never a bargain, but whoever owns this joint now has a vision for putting the "trap" back in Wolfetrap ... as in tourist trap.

$7 for a kids' hot dog? It was pricey last summer, but at least the hot dog was a half pound (and very tasty) all-beef monster.

This one is such a paltry rip-off it would make George Steinbrenner blush.

The adult food was pretty "meh" as well ... not horrible, but certainly not worth the price. You wouldn't call it special -- probably more like "passable." It is pretty clear that they changed food suppliers once again, and this time for the worse.

And the depth of the menu is cut back considerably from summers past as well. That's a real shame, because they had historically done a nice job offering a handful of creative seafood and landlubbers' dishes. Most of that is gone now. (Lamb pops, where are ye?)

To top it off, we had absolutely atrocious service -- walked in with young kids and four adults ... and it took over 45 minutes for the first kids meal (ordered right when our drink orders were placed) to arrive. This on a mid-week night when the restaurant was at most half-filled. When I asked to see the manager (twice), he refused to come out ... sending a bottle of white wine (which was okay, but hardly a solution to the food problem) in his stead. Man up next time, sparky.

FWIW, the bar scene seemed to be as packed as ever. So if that is what you're looking for, the Wolfetrap seemed to still be an option.

The dockside setting is nice, but there is no point in patroning the Wolfetrap anymore. Total FAIL.

“Wofetrap a must in Wolfeboro”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2008

My family always stops in to eat at the Wolfetrap. My kids have their tee shirts and look forward to eating there every year. Good seafood, swordfish steak and beef steak. Lobster rolls are very good. The steamers are fresh but always seem to be a little too sandy. Friendly and efficient service. We like to eat on the porch. I noticed they have added more outside tables next to the back bay. At night it is candle lite. Great place for a casual romantic evening. There is a quick boat shuttle from the main dock in town to the back back at the Wolfetrap.. It is busy so arrive early. If you have to wait there is a comfortable and casual bar area with a baseball game usually on. There is a small shopping booth with souvenirs to occupy time while you wait for a table. Moderately priced.
