“Not bad but not great”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

Great location but rooms need work.
Very good breakfast at the Mad Batter.
Woman at front desk, Jill is a very different individual...not customer oriented at all....rude to guests and potential guests on telephone. Although the young woman at the front desk was extra nice.
Anyway, not bad and I may not return again only because we may want to try others as there are so many...but again, not bad.

We stayed one night for a quick, last-minute birding trip. We didn't get any sort of deal or package, just saw it listed on a Cape May website, read favorable reviews, so we booked directly. Check-in took awhile as there was a line when we got there, but the woman who checked us in was very pleasant, although behind a plexiglass window that was not very welcoming. There is an odd room off the lobby/hallway that has the appearance almost of a storage/utility room, which may be better situated away from public view, as it detracted from the character of the place; for example, the nice seating area across the hallway.

We walked up a beautifully-carpeted stairway to Room 8, which was small and cozy, the size of which we didn't mind, in fact we chose it for this reason. Like some prior reviews, we found it quite dated - cracked wallpaper, stains on ceiling. There was no soap in the bathroom to wash our hands (no Gilchrist & Soames at all) and there was no conditioner in the dispenser; luckily, we had packed our own toiletries. The shower started off cold, took a long time to heat up and then the hot water didn't last long. They were busy, though, so running out of hot water may be expected. The television worked well and the Wi-Fi was appreciated. The bed, while clean, seemed hastily-made, also, like a previous reviewer of this room, we were quite itchy in the bed and unable to get much sleep between the itchiness and the noise of the air conditoner, which didn't seem to be functioning well as our room was warm and stuffy all night, even with the ceiling fan going. Opening the door the next morning to cool air was refreshing. There was lobby noise but it didn't bother us.

We didn't stay for breakfast as we were heading out early for birding, so we can't speak to the quality of food, though it always smelled good when we passed through the porch. We did miss being able to sit on a porch, as the restaurant seating took up all the room. Many reviewers mentioned the bar and happy hour, which is not a selling point to us but is a nice feature if you are looking for that.

Lastly, I don't know why so many people refer to this as a 'B&B' - it isn't. It is a hotel. An old one, in keeping with the era of a Victorian town, so that is not a drawback in and of itself. With the upside of a friendly staff, it is one that could be made better with more general maintenance, such as new paint. Based on the owners' comments of reviews, though, the pride in their establishment is evident, and their updates ongoing.

Green Features: We did not notice any environmentally-friendly practices.

We are having our wedding here in a few short weeks and the staff at the Carol Villa is just AMAZING. Everyone is very nice and they really help you with anything that you need. We stayed in Room 28 which is the suite to finalize our wedding plans. The room is beautiful and has a fabulous view of the ocean right from the bed. The food at the restaurant is amazing and Pam is a wonderful person. I can't wait to go back for our wedding then each year for our anniversary. We booked room 20 for our wedding and I can't wait to sit on the porch! Amazing place HIGHLY recommended.

Room Tip: The suite is great for a family. It is spacious---

Lovely older hotel hosted our family reunion. Our room was spacious with lovely antique furniture. A little more care would have made the dresser drawers slide in and out more easily, and an upgrade to the electrical system, e.g. a power strip, would help with our many electronic devices. Still, the rooms were clean, the shower was refreshing, and we appreciated that. Staff was helpful and food was excellent at the Mad Batter. Location was terrific and our grandson loved the miniature golf down the street and nearness to the beach!

Perfect location, amazing breakfast, cute hotel! Booked a travelzoo deal, included lots of extras. we visited both the local wineries with free tasting vouchers. Went on a trolley tour seeing the Victorian part of cape may. Hotel was the perfect location to do everything. Staff was all very friendly.

Our first trip to the Carroll Villa was in 1979 or 1980. The Mad Batter Restaurant was recommended to us by a close friend and we decided to stay at the hotel. We have visited several times since and have never been disappointed. The rooms are quaint and the staff very friendly and accommodating. And, it is only half a block to the beach!

I also consider the value very compelling. Whenever we stay in Cape May we always make it a point to eat most breakfast/lunch at the Mad Batter and also will eat dinner there a couple of times during our stay. Considering the package of a voucher which covers most of the cost of the breakfast and a discount for dinner, it just makes sense to stay here. The service was excellent. Chita was most helpful at check in and Greg and Carol made excellent recommendations during our dinners.

My son and I had a brief stay at the Carrol Villa in August. We'd been before with my husband who couldn't make this trip.

The location can't be beat - you're right there on historic Jackson street - a block from the beach in one direction and to the Wasington Mall area in the other. Breakfast comes in the form of a voucher to be used at the Mad Batter for lunch or dinner. Can't beat the breakfast and the number of choices. The restaurant also has a wonderful dinner and guests receive a discount.

Parking is provided via a voucher to be used in a parking lot about a quater mile away. The walk isn't bad at all with lots of things to look at.

If you're looking for sumptuous lodging - this isn't the place - it's lovely and clean but it's in an old Victorian building - the rooms are on the smaller side. If you want to be in the middle of Cape May and don't plan on spending a ton of time in the room - then you can't beat the Carroll Villa.
