We stayed at the Hotel Alcott for three nights this week, our first visit to lovely Cape May. The location is great- one short block to the beach. Parking is impossible and the Hotel's parking lot is quite a distance from the Hotel. A shuttle service might be nice. The hotel is nice enough, very clean. The beach towels are great. But amenities in the rooms are sorely lacking and the rooms are not kept up (but they are clean). In our room, the shower head and handle were both broken and there was no water pressure at all. Oddly, the shampoo provided by the hotel were in small cylinders that made it impossible to get the shampoo out. The third day, there were different brands of shampoo, conditioner and lotion, leading us to believe that the hotel bought sample buyouts and just put out whatever they had. The worst thing was the bathroom towels- thinner than any hotel towel I have ever seen and rough like sandpaper. Although they advertised bathrobes, there were none in our room. In our friends' room, the air conditioning broke and they had to be moved to another room.
As for concierge services, they were non existent. I asked several questions about the best boat tours and trolley rides around the town and I was told: "I don't know. I live here. I haven't tried them." We asked for restaurant recommendations and also got little response. We asked how to get to the local day spa where we had booked services and was told to ask someone else. Although there are no elevators (as is expected in a historic hotel), there was no one at the hotel to help us either in or out with our bags. The stairs are long and winding. My husband has bad knees and help would have been appreciated. Also, since it is impossible to park in front of the hotel during the day, having a valet at the entrance would have greatly helped us with checking in and getting our luggage out of the car and to the room. A parking valet would be greatly appreciated by anyone checking into the hotel. In a hotel with similar parking problems, the Omni Parker House in Boston, there is no issue because there is valet service as soon as you pull up to the hotel. In short, for $290 a night, we vastly overpaid to stay here. There were no luxury services or amenities but, the hotel is clean and fine if you just need a room.

The hotel itself is nice and conveniently located by the beach. However, there is no parking unless you are willing to walk two miles to their offsite parking or drive around and look for a metered spot on the side streets - which can add more expense to the visit. We had a Standard hotel room and were charged more than the posted prices online. The room was tiny and we paid $210 a night. If the location and ambiance of the hotel building itself were enough to make the stay amazing then it may have been just that. However, the staff was pretty rude. Our party paid to have a wedding reception there and were told rude, snide comments like "we aren't used to weddings this casual." The staff was very reluctant to help us with the things we needed. Quality does not come on its own, the staff at the hotel alcott seems to believe that relying on thier historic location by the shore is all they need to succeed. Customer service is lacking here. They ran out of foods for the very "casual" holiday inn style continental breakfast. For the price you pay to stay here and have a reception the quality of service and amenities are far from quality.

Room Tip: If you get the cheapest room you will be disappointed in its size, if you get any larger rooms you w...

Last min Trip due to no rain for the weekend/lucky find having the only vacancy for 2 nights(Fri and Sat). 1st time in Cape May/best room my wife and son can ask for- 1st flr suite/(only suite on the 1st floor)large spacious, clean and we did not have to worry about bothering anyone since we have a 18 month old son(superman). It made easy to move with all the beach stuff from room to street to beach which was right across the street and close to all restaurants and attractions.Staff was very professional but knew how to smile(a lot of hotel staff has forgotten how to do this)Free breakfast/stay away from those croissants - heaven in a basket. planning to come back and stay in the fall!

Room Tip: clean/ spacious room/high ceilings/spacious bathroom/

Hotel staff was very friendly, it's extremely close to the beach, rooms and lobby were nice and clean, but the parking situation wasted a lot of time and a lot of quarters.

It may not sound like a big deal, but it ended up being a real drag. They have an "off-site" lot, but it's about 2 miles away and an exhausting walk if it's hot and sunny. Parking nearby the hotel is all metered (25 cents per 15 minutes) and but it's hard to find on a spot during peak beach hours. 2 or 3 blocks away there are un-metered spots, but those are even harder to find. It's easier to park on the street in Manhattan, at least my $32 parking ticket wasn't at Manhattan prices.

On the plus side, it's hard to beat the beach at Cape May.

Room Tip: Bring $20 in quarters

My boyfriend and I decided to go on vacation to Cape May relatively late. We had been talking about it for a while, but only started looking into things in the middle of May, barely a month before we planned to take our vacation. While researching hotels online, we realized how very expensive it is to stay at a nice hotel near the beach; almost every place we looked at was $200-$300 per night, which we thought was completely outrageous! We found The Hotel Alcott on www.capemay.com and saw that the starting room rate was only $130! We called, and the gentleman at the service desk could not have been more helpful! He helped us find the best time to come, told us about the rooms, gave us a bunch of different rates based off of what we could afford/wanted, was extremely patient as we kept wanting to talk it over and call back, and got us a room for $150 a night!

The Hotel Alcott is even more beautiful when you see it than it is in the pictures. Not only is the hotel beautiful, but it’s only one block away from the boardwalk and beach and three blocks away from the Washington Street Shops; my boyfriend and I walked to everything on our vacation except Wildwood! Along with the beauty and fantastic location, the staff is also incredible! They let us check-in early, gave us guided instructions and maps throughout town, and walked me up to the top floor to get pictures of the room right before we left because I forgot to take some for our scrapbook; they really go out of their way to please you and give you the best vacation ever!

The rooms are very small, but they are extremely comfortable and clean! The maid comes every day and the room is spotless after she leaves! The entire hotel uses central air, which can be controlled in each individual room, so it is nice and cold plus you don’t have to worry about one of those window air conditioners being loud or not working properly. The bed and pillows are soooo comfortable! Normally hotel beds are hard or lumpy, but this bed was as comfortable and soft as a form mattress!

Each room has two side tables with drawers, a slim closet to hang clothes or for storage, and a large credenza that stores the TV and provides three drawers for your clothing. We were a little unsure about putting everything we brought with us in the drawers (I mean, we didn’t know the people who work here), but everything we put in the drawers (IPods, camera, keys, wallets, money, etc.) or even left out throughout the room were right were we left them after the maid came only neater =). They are an amazingly honest and trustworthy hotel!

The bathrooms are absolutely spotless, and they give you plenty of soft, fluffy towels! For the two of us, they gave us six bath towels, three hand towels, two washcloths, and a floormat every day. Six towels may seem excessive, but with constantly going to-and-from the beach and heat, we used all of the towels every day; they provide fantastic service with everything, everyday!

Another aspect of the hotel we loved is how it’s on a side street/the serenity of the hotel. So many people want a hotel that is on the main street across from the beach, but they don’t think about how busy that street it! It’s kind of difficult to enjoy the ocean when all you can hear is traffic rumbling by, people yelling, etc. The Hotel Alcott is in a perfect location to enjoy a quiet breakfast in the morning and a relaxing, fresh ocean breeze in the evening. Also, many of the hotels are so large that you can quite easily get a noisy neighbor who keeps you up all night or wakes you up early in the morning, but The Hotel Alcott is the most quiet and relaxing hotel I have ever stayed at! The guests are all extremely pleasant, polite, and even helpful! It’s a wonderful experience to be eating breakfast and be able to just casually start chatting with the people sitting around you.

A final wonderful factor is their delicious continental breakfast! This is no ordinary continental breakfast with cheap food; The Hotel Alcott serves fresh croissants, muffins, bagels, cereal, milk, juice, and coffee which you can either eat inside or out on the veranda, which is extremely pleasant.

The only down-side to The Hotel Alcott was the parking. While most of the hotels have parking lots, since The Hotel Alcott was designed from an old Victorian hotel/house, the only parking is on the street or in their parking lot 6-8 blocks away. It was extremely difficult to find parking when we arrived Sunday, but Monday-Wednesday was 1000 times better! All of the locals come to the beach on weekends and take all the parking spaces, but during the week we found free parking within 3 blocks of the hotel every time! If you stay here, don’t stress about the parking even though it’s frustrating at first; it does get better =). My boyfriend and I are already planning our next trip, and we definitely plan to stay here again!

From the time you walk into the lobby, this hotel offers a true Victorian experience. The decor carries the era throughout, from the porch rockers to the windows, wallpaper, duvet and lighting fixtures. The bathrooms are modern as is the large flat screen TV, but the hotel blends in with the Victorian theme found throughout Cape May. Large comfortable guest rooms, several open onto a large upstairs balcony. A delicious continental breakfast is complimentary each morning, as are the snacks and lemondade available in the lobby throughout the day. Located a short block from the beach, and within walking distance of the entire downtown area of shops, restaurants and the historic district. Parking is on the street, and difficult to find.

Room Tip: Front rooms that open onto the balcony.
