“Eclectic and Charming.”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

Just completed my second stay here and will return again. The second week in September is perfect. In season this location might be a little too busy since it is across the street from the only Arcade on the beach. But it is also just across the street from the Beach! Traditional charm of the bygone days of the Jersey shore hotels are preserved at the Macomber. Stairs, no elevator. Tastefully modernized rooms with independent AC control, not window units, provide comfort without compromising the look of the era. Excellent beds. Small bathrooms. It's all you need as a couple or single person. The Victorian lobby/parlor along with the front porch are nice places to gather and meet friends or other guests. Staff is casual yet attentive. Rooms are kept nice and clean. Towels and bedding of good quality. Off street parking included. We kept our beach gear and bikes in our mini-van and took them out each day as needed. Very convenient thing to do. If your hotel tastes run more towards modern amenities, you will not be happy. But if you appreciate a warm and charming experience, stay at the Hotel Macomber.

I stayed at the Hotel Macomber for a few days in September 2013.We were told this was a real Hotel with B&B charm. For the most part they are right.. but that isn’t always a good thing.

When we checked in, the front desk was very courteous and helpful. We asked for more towels and they called the housekeeping to deliver more to our room wWithin 10 minutes.

The lobby/lounge/ front porch is nice and clean with a nice comfortable atmosphere with attractive furnishings. They also have private outdoor porches in upper levels for certain rooms.

The room was mostly clean as well as the bathroom. The room itself has a wonderful charm. I liked the 2 white painted wood end tables,as well as the beautiful antique chair( see photo). The walls have fairly nice attractive wallpaper. (see photo). The rug looked nice but it wasn’t 100% clean and under the bed there was a lot of dust/dirt( see photo).

The bed had a beautiful bed runner.( see photo) The bed felt fairly firm and was in a beautiful white painted wicker headboard/frame. The thing I didn’t like was it had a foam mattress pad that slid around all the time and caused the sheet to fall out. Speaking of sheets, the bed had a flat sheet where a fitted sheet should have been( they use only flat sheets to make the bed) so the bottom sheet came out all the time( I have only seen this once before in Ocean City NJ… and I vowed never to stay there again). This is very cheap of them.

The LCD TV was on a beautiful white painted wicker dresser. Many drawers. Very attractive looking.( see photo)

The room is a split-ductless AC system. Quiet. fairly efficient. But it says you cant set it under 67 or else it freezes. What’s the point? What if it was 100 degrees out! Bad idea guys.

The fridge wasn’t very practical It has a lot of shelves ( so you cant stand anything up except a water bottle on the door).Plus it doesn’t freeze .So if you want frozen bottles for the beach the next day, I would try another hotel.

The bathroom was clean but poor layout/features. There was no shampoo (only liquid hand soap and some tiny bars of soap( see photo).
No floor mat on tile floor( You could easily slip)
The shower was pretty much a nightmare to use. Although it was nice to have a stand in one, the shower caddy kept dropping any or all of our shower amenities ( see photo).
Also, even though there was a floor trim to try to prevent puddles( see photo),the shower curtain was too short. It made it very easy to cause leaks They gave you not much room to clean yourself (you couldn’t stand far away from the showerhead if you wanted to) The worst part about the shower was the temperature and pressure. Not only the pressure was one of the poorest I have ever seen in a hotel in my life, but it took 5 minutes for the water to heat up as well!
Also the sink itself was poorly designed: Whenever my girlfriend tried to wash her face in the sink, she couldn’t because the glass shelf was sticking out from the wall and always in the way( see photo). The bathroom has no ventilation fan.

The rates after Labor Day were reasonable ( but definitely not worth it mid summer)

The WIFI was a problem. I constantly had trouble connecting to my work laptop). Cmon
guys…

The worst part about the room was the noise. We couldn’t sleep through the night any of the days we stayed there. and there’s no one at the front desk after 10 to complain if you did. Of course just about every hotel in the Cape May does but still… If anyone needed it, its this one.

All night long you hear people jumping up and down above you and to the side of the room. You hear door slams outside your room. I had to literally put cotton in my ears in order to sleep for just a few hours! I had to use a portable sound machine. We woke up tired and unrefreshed from lack of sleep.

If they worked on a few of the problems I mentioned I MIGHT go back…… but other than that I wouldn’t recommend it. There are far better hotels in Cape May.

Not Recommended.

PROS:
Clean room mostly
LCD TV in room.
Attractive bed frame
Helpful front desk service
Generous with towels.
Nicely rated restaurant built in
Attractive room and furnishings
Close to beach
Close to bagel cafe
thick towels
Nice porch to hang out at
Charming lobby/lounge.
Price ( at times)

CONS:
Not so clean rug( especially under bed)
Bathroom has no ventilation fan
Shower curtain could be longer
Bed had no fitted sheet
Water pressure/temp awful in shower
Bad value during peak time in summer( July- Aug) over $200
Shower area very narrow
Shower curtain short
Bathroom had no shampoo/mouthwash/conditioner
Fridge did not freeze
AC easily freezes.
Noisy! (extremely thin walls/doors(you can hear everything from neighbors above and below as well as hallway)
Sink layout poor.
No coffeemaker
No elevator( it doesn’t sound bad but the stairs are very high and when you are carrying all your luggage it isn’t easy.)
Poor Wireless internet connection (would connect and disconnect frequently)
no hand towels
No floor mat

We come to this lovely hotel every year. This hotel is very old, however, it is absolutely charming.
They have modernized the rooms and they are very nicely decorated.
Bed was very comfortable. Right across the street from the beach.
Hotel staff is pleasant and accommodating.

I absolutely loved this place, the private porch was great (little kids would wave at us like we were royalty up there) and it is right in the middle of everything you could want to do in Cape May. The staff was also very helpful, providing towels for the beach and countless other things we forgot to bring.
Just be advised, it is certainly a "historic" (aka old) place. Musty smells, uneven flooring, a few ants, and of course typical beach dampness is everywhere. Things like this didn't bother me but if you expect spotless surfaces and a supportive bed...stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Pay extra for the rooms with the private porch! The relaxing comfortable chairs and ocean view is wo...

We were lucky to get a first floor room as we requested at this no elevator hotel. Right on Beach drive about midway in town. Lovely lobby with antique furniture. Hot Bagel place had great bagels right next door for breakfast. Across from the Convention center. Sitting on the front porch in the rockers was super in the morning. Very attentive staff and room was well cleaned each morning. Would easily return to this hotel.

Room Tip: With no elevator you need to ask for a first floor which is one flight up. It did not bother us tha...

Loved the location. Sitting on porch rocking chair for a glass of wine and a cigar was heaven. Last night of stay fire alarms go off in middle of the night and we had to evacuate but staff arrived to assist and they went above and beyond to please guests. I left hotel very satisfied even after that inconvenience (which was started by another guest who did not follow rules and smoked inside hotel).

I look forward to booking another stay at Macomber soon since i know they take care of their customers.

Room Tip: First floor get the rooms with the balconies! They look awesome. Or if your into scary stuff get ROO...

My husband and I were pleased with the location and the room. it was very clean but we came away with two complaints...the bed was not overly comfortable and the bathroom sink was very narrow making it difficult for my husband to shave. Our favorite memory is meeting people in the evening on the front porch...very pleasant!
The staff were friendly and helpful to us. The Macomber is on the Historical register in Cape May. We will likely stay there again.
