I am from Hoboken, New Jersey and was a first time visitor to Cape May. I went to Le Mer with my parents who are both senior citizens and my girlfriend. I choose Le Mer based on the reviews I read on trip advisor. My overall impression was the hotel was very overpriced, the service was poor, but the rooms were clean and had nice views. Basically, you pay for a room, pool and location. The restaurant is not owned by the hotel. The rooms considering the massive price tag do not have any extras beyond what you might find at a Marriott Courtyard or Comfort Inn. I paid roughly $500 per night on average for two sea view rooms so the below is based on that experience.
Service: I arrived early at the hotel and asked the hotel to check me in early if possible. In all fairness they tried to accomodate me. The woman looked at the computer at the rooms we reserved and said one room was ready. She said its weird the people have paid and the room has been made up, but they haven't checked out. So the woman said I will check them out. We went up to the room. The people were still there and the room had not been cleaned yet. I felt bad for the people who had not received a call (It was 12PM) telling them they had to check out. The couple was very upset. Honestly, I was not bothered by this incident, but this was more symptomatic of how this hotel is generally run.
The problem got sorted out. We went down to the desk and asked for our beach tags which they gave us. However, the woman kept telling us in a condescending way at least two or three times that we would be charged $28 if the tags were lost. I understood her point, but there was no reason to over emphasize. She also kept saying you know you need to move your car to the back lot because the front one is for loading and unloading. I was a bit confised at this point, because they were trying to accomodate but also being rude.
We originally planned to stay for one night and extended for an extra night. Upon checkout I asked for a one hour extension (from 11AM to 12PM). The woman began to argue with me and say that it was impossible. I said I have never stayed anywhere in the world that does not grant you a one hour extension. She said if you really need it I'll do it for one. Both my parents are over 65 and I did not want to interfere or rush them. I told them it was unacceptable and finally she said to me fine you can have it if that's what you want. Their check in time is 2PM and they were able to grant e the request. I do not understand why we had to argue to get to that result.
Rooms: The rooms were very average. They are clean and spacious, but really nothing special. I would put them on par with a mid range US hotel with a view. The hotel basically looks like a cheap hotel renovated into an expensive one. The showers had a crusty shower curtain and there were no extras like toothpastes or combs. Just really cheap shampoo. Had I paid $150 per night I would not have cared. But at $500 per night it just felt stingy. The rooms were quiet though.
Beach Service: The hotel has a beach service. This was actually run well. I thought they were quick and helpful. Moreover, the restaurant serves food via the beach service. The food and restaurant service was good.
Restaurant: The restaurant was excellent and so were the cocktails. However, the restaurant is not owned or run by the hotel. To be honest when I come back to Cape May I will eat at this restaurant, but not stay at this hotel.
I know it is high season, but considering what their competitors charge this hotel is massively overpriced. I thin they need to charge no more than $250 per room until they can get their service to be more professional. The lady at the front desk's attitude really left me with a sour taste in my mouth about Le Mer.
