Charlie and Barbara are terrific hosts - you can see them pouring their hearts into this place. Every year, they make some sort of improvement to the property - this year, new air conditioners and handrails in the tubs - big or small, they are always trying. We book the same room a year in advance to take advantage of the view of the boardwalk and ocean and enjoying a cocktail on our private balcony (as opposed to what a previous poster stated) - kinda hard to miss them. It's not perfect - but it's a home away from home - and that's important on week long trips such as the ones we like to take.

I took my wife to the Avondale for her B-day in April. One or 2 previous comments made me a little nervous, but it was hard to fin a room at all, without going into the $200 plus range. We stayed in a King Suite. Based on an earlier review we opted to stay on the second floor to avoid any stale smell. There was a musty odor and I began to regret my decision. We left the balcony entrance and the door open, and in less than half it hour it was completly gone. I chalked it up to being the first weekend after being closed for the winter.

Each year we stay in 3 or 4 seaside motels. By their nature they take a lot of abuse. It was obvious that this place is well cared for. Everything is clean and in nice condition. The balcony was a generous size and had 2 nice wooden rockers, not the usual Walmart flimsy plastic. The view consisted of 3 large panes of glass that were very clean. We have stayed in so many places where this is not the case, that we now carry our own windex and paper towels. Why pay for a view you can't see? We experienced no rudness during our stay. We had dealings with both the owner(Charlie?) and the man who works the afternoon shift. On arrival he graciously showed us both a 2nd and 3rd floor room, and offered to help us with our luggage as well. The owner spent quite a bit of time talking with us about what there was to see and do in the area. Bonus points for keeping a clean breakfast area. I usually won't even eat from them they are so dirty. I could go on. There are lots of little details, like the fact that the chairs at the table by the window are padded so you can relax with a glass of wine and remain comfortable, that you almost would'nt notice unless you stay at as many seaside motels as we do. This is easily the best overall experiance we have had in a sub $150 room (spring rate) One last thing, it is also the perfect location, besides the ocean view, you are in easy waking distance to all the restaurants and the Washington walking mall shopping area.

We have been coming here for the past several years & wouldn't go anyplace else. The owners are delightful & very helpful. It's delightful to sit on the porch & view the ocean &
people walking by. It's difficult to get our Mom around w/ a walker & wish there were more handicapped & more easily accessable bathrooms. Can't wait to come again this year.

We enjoyed very much our stay at the Avondale-by-the Sea, and found none of the problems mentioned by other guests. Of course, we went out-of-season (mid-October) and received discounted rates, so perhaps our expectations weren’t as high. We found the rooms clean and well stocked. I especially liked the shower, where one could adjust the temperature and power separately. I have suffered too many showers with a single control where in order to achieve an acceptable temperature one is almost blasted out of the tub. Also, I was glad to see a Toto water-conserving toilet. Regarding the continental breakfast, I was pleased to find my usual choice, juice and cereal, in addition to the bagels and donuts. We would be happy to return.

We've stayed at Avondale by the Sea for seven years based on location, rates and room type (separate bedroom). Each year we've commented on how rigid and unwelcoming the manager has been. This year, he made our stay one to forget. I reported finding a mouse in the pool. His response: "Are you sure?" Then he reluctantly sent an employee to pick out the mouse and did not clean or treat the pool afterward. Even worse, our room smelled distinctly of mold, which we attributed to the air conditioning unit on the first night of our 2-night stay and turned it off. The second night was so warm we had to run the AC. The smell of mold was unbearable, giving me a poor and congested night's sleep (about four hours in all) and my husband and young sons all awoke congested as well. I talked to the manager whose first reply was: "You might want to stay somewhere else next year." No apology, no courtesy, no inkling of customer service. It was a clear "I-don't-need-your-business" message and a disgrace. We will not be returning.

This motel is well managed, friendly and very clean. Has an across the street view of the ocean. Quiet hotel at that time; continental type breakfast in the morning. Only wish would be that the coffee would start at 7am, not 8. Beach vacationers often get an early start on the day! Good value after summer season.

This hotel is one of the nicest in Cape May. The place is very clean, staff is friendly and accommodating and the owner is always on site. Their location is perfect for walking to the beach or to downtown.
