I'm torn about the Beach Shack... we just returned from our 3 nights there. We had an amazing time in Cape May. It was our first time there. There were 5 adults, a toddler and an infant...i searched everywhere for a place that could accomodate all of us and the Beach Shack was the only thing i could find that still had availibility (i booked 2 months in advance). I wasn't thrilled about the idea of it being a motel bc i vowed to never stay at a place that wasn't clean and of good quality...but the website didn't seem all that terrible and the reviews were great.

Let's just say that my husband and I differ in our opinions on this place. My husband and i loved it and would return. I, however, don't think i could stay there again. I'm not sure if it's bc we spent $500/night for a motel or bc it was a typical motel feel. Not to say that it wasn't clean...b/c it was. It's just that having 2 little kids, means we would be in the room a lot, for naps and getting ready, so i just wasnt as comfortable there as i would've been in a hotel.

We had family option B which had a queen sized bed in the front room, and a double and twin beds in the back room. The back room had the air conditioner unit which was vey loud. The front room doesn't have air conditioning but the air is supposed to blow into the front since the door to the back room has the grates. We kept the door open though so my in-laws could feel more air in the front. Twin bed was super uncomfortable. For some reason one side would tilt down when you leaned on it or layed on that side. Pretty dangerous. Bathroom was small but manageable. Room has a microwave, fridge, plates, bowls, etc which was helpful. Like i said, the room is clean, but it's weathered...

The live music on sat night was amazing! The girl singing and playing guitar was soooo good! The whole outdoor feel w/the outdoor seating, bonfire, live music and bar were so chill....pretty awesome. Rusty nail had really good food. had lunch and breakfast there. So convenient that it was literally right outside our door. Kids meal comes on a frisbee which my son loved!

Beach is right across the street. $5.00 for over 12 yrs old/day (other options avail). Complimentary beach towels, chairs and umbrellas that the guys on beach help set up for you...really convenient!!

Location was great...was able to walk to Mad Batter, Uncle Bill's Pancake House, Ice cream shops, Chill (smoohies and crepes), mini golf. Not too far from the Mall as well, although we did drive there.

All in all had a great time. If you're ok w/the whole "motel feel" that isn't luxury at all, and want a lively atmosphere that is kid friendly, and pretty much on the beach, then this is definitely the place to be.

Room Tip: higher floors have view of ocean

I had not been to Cape May for over 20 years and was pleasantly suprised that I could still be enchanted by this wonderful and charming area .
Myself and a friend stayed at the Beach Shack, right across the street from the ocean.
Beach Shack is part of several hotels, the famous Congress Hall being one of them.
The hotel seemed like a throwback from the 1950's, this being a good point.
The pool was kind of smallish, but more than adequate.
Our room was very simple, clean and comfortable.
There is a small kitchenette, complete with microwave, fridge, coffeemaker and utensils.
There is no phone in the rooms, but everyone uses their cells anyway.
The hotel is in a great location for walking to the numerous, stores, sights and restaurants on Washington street.
One of the great pluses in choosing this hotel is that we are provided free of charge, umbrellas, chairs and towls on the beach and everything is set up for you.
The only downside is that you have to pay to get onto the beach $5 per day or $10 for 3 days.
We felt that the hotel should have provided the guests with a pass.
otherwise it was a very enjoyable stay.

We had a great time. Highly recommend. There are lots of kids and it's pretty loud, so if you are looking for quiet and peaceful, this is definitely not the place for you. We will be back next year.

Since we were only in Cape May for 2 nights and traveling with our 6yo son, our accommodation selection was limited. But the Beach Shack proved to be the perfect fit...2 queen beds (surprisingly descent linens and towels), wet bar, minifrige, cups, bowls for cereal, etc, private small, but functional bath, clean pool, lively, yet kid friendly bar/restaurant....and best of all... an amazing 3rd floor view of the beautiful beach! Also, it was a huge bonus to have use of chairs, towels, and umbrella!

I would say that our expectations were met, not necessarily succeeded. The rooms could definitely use some touch ups...even a fresh coat of paint would make a big difference. But as long as you accept the Beach Shack for what it is... you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Choose a 3rd floor room, poolside (afternoon/evening music can still be heard but not as loudly)

I needed to mend a broken heart and longed to see Cape May NJ. I found Beach Shack hidden like a treasure in a list of bigger places to stay...I took the chance and boy was it refreshing, the therapy I needed and the digs were super for the price. I can't wait to go back - at the same time of year - JUNE. Before the mad dash of others - it's the place to be and have the same luxury of food, entertainment, location and you can't beat the closeness of the waves on the shore. Many a photo perfect picture will result!
