“A lovely B&B”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

We lucked into great weather and a great B&B this October in Cape May. Just outside the town center and those insatiable Cape May parking meters and blocks from the beach, the Mason is in a great location. The Davis Room on the second floor overlooking the street is a two room suite with a fireplace and a private bath with jacuzzi. I cannot confirm that it is a working fireplace. It's gas, but I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. Perhaps if the weather was a little cooler, I would have bothered to ask. Quiet even with a full house and nicely furnished, the room comes with a closet reminiscent of the Victorian era to which the building dates, that is to say really, really small. Check in is at Tea Time, so arrivals are greeted with warm beverages and an assortment of cookies, baked goods and homemade chocolate. Bicycles are available to borrow and provide an ideal mode of transportation to work off the wonderful French toast served at breakfast. Overall, a clean, comfortable, charming place to stay.

We decided to re-visit the Cape May area and thought it might be fun to stay at the same place (but during a different time of year). Last year we were there during the summer, this time we stayed in the fall (October). If possible, the stay was even better than before. This time we stayed in the Madison Room (2nd floor). The room was very quiet (even though the Cottage was sold out), inviting and very clean. Our weekend just happen to coincide with Chocolate Week. What a treat!! Friday night was an over the top Chocolate Reception. Everything was made in house, and was all about chocolate. Patti (Outstanding Innkeeper), is not only a great cook but also a great Chocolatier. This is definetely one of those places that seem to keep getting better with time!!!! We will be back for a third visit.

Room Tip: We have had a room on the first floor and on the second floor. We thought they both were private an...

Husband and I did a two day getaway..last minute decision and found a $300 per night room at the Mason Cottage B&B.
Location is wonderful..just quiet enough but close to everything. B&B was fine..clean and a very nice front porch to watch people walk by.
The staff were pleasant..not really friendly..we never did figure out who was the operator and who were the workers..one very disappointing thing was that we were looking forward to the big, fabulous breakfast..had a very overdone quiche, pretty tasetless. Not what we expected.

My fiance and I stayed at this beautiful B&B in August for 3 nights. We had an incredible experience. The location is perfect...one block from the beach and a few blocks to everything else. The Inn is stunning and kept in immaculate condition. Patti and her staff made us feel right at home and provided everything we needed for a perfect romantic getaway. The gardens are beautiful and the breakfast and tea snacks were amazing...especially the french toast! I highly recommend the Mason Cottage! You will love it. We had such an amazing time, we are looking into getting married in Cape May and staying here with our guests.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Rose Room and it was wonderful!

My husband and I enjoyed staying at the Mason Cottage B&B on our return trip to Cape May in August. Despite the fact that they don't offer personal parking spots, the innkeeper, Patti, directed us to a street one block away where we quickly found parking (at 5 pm on a weekend) that wasn't metered.

Breakfasts were delicious - fresh fruit and a maple syrup-covered bread pudding on one day, and a freshly baked fruit nut muffin and salsa-covered egg casserole on the next. They offered a nice tea/snack hour from 3-4 pm and served lemonade, iced tea, and an assortment of cookies alongside a chocolate cake.

Our room, the Decatur Suite, was the first large room after a flight of stairs. The window a/c unit kept the room nice and very cool, as did the overhead ceiling fan with its 3 speed levels. True, the adjoining bathroom with jacuzzi and shower did heat up easily, but by keeping the door open and turning on the bathroom's ventilation van, it cooled down after some time.

Alas, our Cape May weekend that we had planned 6 weeks in advance had a small kink - record rains for the NJ and NY area (8-10" rain in one day!) for our entire weekend, so we never made it onto the sands of the beach. We did manage to walk the length of the beach area, as well as walking all over Cape May to enjoy the beautiful neighborhoods and buildings. We made several walks (some in rain) over to the Washington Mall for light shopping and dining.

Because of the rain, we were able to stick around the B&B a bit more and appreciate the beautiful veranda and its comfortable rocking chairs. We also had both of our breakfasts outside (it's first come first served) - there are plenty of tables/chairs in the front and one set in the back. As we checked out of the B&B, the sun had come out, and we saw some of the other guests using the complimentary bicycles and helmets. And, for TV lovers, there are small flat screen TVs in each of the bedrooms with lots of cable options...

All in all, a wonderful relaxing B&B that is only a short 2 block walk to the beach. We certainly would plan to come back on a SUNNY weekend =) As far as one of the other reviewers' comments about the lack of a/c, while we were in the common rooms and in our Decatur Suite, we were entirely comfortable with the temperature...however, there was no sun those two days and the temp outside ranged 68-80, so maybe that's why the place felt fairly cool. The Decatur Suite's a/c unit kept the room sufficiently cool for us, and we like it cool!

My husband had planned a two night getaway leading up to my birthday this year as a surprise. He couldn't have picked a more accommodating and charming place for the special occasion. We really enjoyed our stay. Kim the innkeeper was friendly and hospitable. She provided us with tons of info and had some excellent recommendations for dining in cape may during our brief visit. The location was ideal being just a short block away from the beach and a couple blocks from the town center for shopping and dining. The cottage itself hosted a simple tea service at 3 pm daily and I will say that for a first attempt at shortbreads the tea cookies Kim made were so delicious we had to grab seconds. Breakfast each morning was made from fresh local ingredients and the only thing better than the food itself was having the chance to dine each morning on the beautiful porch. Great for people-watching or to relax and read a book. Mason cottage also has beach cruiser bikes available for use so on a could afternoon we took advantage and took a 2 mile bike ride to the cape may lighthouse and migratory bird sanctuary. It was picture perfect. That area was a hidden gem and apparently is the place to be for bird watchers in September and October. My birthday was topped off when I got a special treat. Peaches and cream French toast with a candle and a happy birthday greeting!! We had a great stay and would highly recommend the mason cottage for it's comfort, classic style and modern touches. Great location and great staff!

Room Tip: Our room was street facing. Had a great ocean breeze but you do get street noise as a result.

The location of The Mason Cottage was excellent. It's within walking distance to the Mall and all the good restaurants. Sitting on the porch was very enjoyable and the innkeepers were delightful and most accommodating. One problem was having to find a parking space on the very busy and crowded streets. The common areas are not air conditioned and with the brutally hot temperatures, it was somewhat uncomfortable in the dining room and parlor and unbearably hot in the library. The Decatur Suite was really nice, but, it too, could have used a bigger AC unit since it was a very good sized room and didn't really cool off the bathroom. Overall, it was a very nice place to stay.

Dear Guest,
While we did experience record high temps in Cape May during July, I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Mason Cottage overall. Unfortunately the day of your arrival (July 24th), the high in Cape May was 95 degrees and extremely humid. Like many B&B’s in Cape May, we are historically registered and not permitted to install central air conditioning. While all of our guest rooms have 8,000 BTU window units, it is difficult for “any” AC unit to keep up when temperatures reach 95+.

With regards to the library, there is a very large air conditioner installed which is turned on when we have very hot days (my apologies, I am not sure why it was running this day). This unit not only cools the library, but cool air travels down the hall to the dining room and parlor. While weather temperatures are unpredictable, I do hope that you will come and visit us again. Best regards, Kim
