Wonderful location in Cape May! We could see the ocean from our bedroom (Davis Suite), close to the 'Mall' and all the other attractions. Parking might be a problem in the summer. The inn was in pristine condition (I'm a retired builder), nicely period furnished, very clean. Breakfast was 'spartan'...good but no choices as to juice, rolls, pastry, toast, etc.

Room Tip: Davis Suite was great!

My wife and I just returned from quick 3-day, 2-night trip to Cape May, staying in the Mason Suite. After reading all the rave reviews here on TripAdvisor for the Mason Cottage, particularly for Patty and her hospitality and delicious breakfasts, we were very much looking forward to our visit. We were disappointed to say the least. Our stay at the Mason can be summed up as "pleasant, but underwhelmed." We were the only ones staying at the Inn during our stay and when we learned that, we thought we'd get some extra attention and warmth. Our experience was just the opposite. Because Patty and her friends/helpers were busy decorating the house for Christmas during our stay, my wife and I constantly felt like intruders instead of welcomed guests. Our interaction with Patty was minimal, and while she answered our questions and gave us some good advice on restaurants (Lobster House!), she never initiated any conversation with us other than a passing hello and brief chat about the decorating and a smile from time to time. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our private suite, watched a few movies on the DVD player (bring your own DVDs, the Inn does not have a collection) and enjoyed the afternoon tea and treats, which were one of the highlights I suppose. The breakfasts were OK, not wonderful as some have said here on TripAdvisor, and again, my wife and I felt breakfasts would be a good opportunity to strike up a conversation with Patty, but other than answering our questions she just did not seem interested in us. Pleasant, but our stay at the Mason left us feeling very underwhelmed. To make matters worse, the merchants on Washington Street were not very welcoming, either. Hardly ever got a "hello" or "welcome" from clerks or store owners. We bought things from folks who said hello (spending $300+), and promptly left the stores where we were ignored. One unexpected highlight of our trip was during our drive home. We stopped for lunch at Dodge's Market in Elmer, NJ. What a delightful little corner deli/market. Delicious food and for such a small market, a fantastic assortment of products. After disappointing customer service in Cape May, the folks at Dodge's Market were a delightful breath of fresh air! It was a wonderful cap to our 15th Anniversary trip to New Jersey.

Room Tip: A soaking tub is not a jacuzzi tub. Carefully read the room descriptions.

Upon reading your review, it deeply saddens me to hear that you felt this way. As an innkeeper, it is a very difficult line to walk when gauging the amount of interaction a guest desires. Some guests want to keep solely to themselves, while others prefer more interaction from me and the other guests. I come across so many different personalities in my line of work and I try to meet the needs of all my guests. I apologize, but I did not want to intrude, as it was you and your wife’s 15th year wedding anniversary and I assumed that you wanted alone time.

Christmas is a very special time at the Mason Cottage and your visit did correspond with our two days of decorating. Decorating both the inside and outside of the inn is a huge undertaking, but we feel that the time is worth it when our guests see the final outcome – it is absolutely beautiful and something we take great pride in. Since the inn is on quite a few Cape May Christmas B&B tours, we are under the gun to get all the decorating done in two days. The ladies that were here decorating specialize in interior holiday decorating that is why I brought them for their assistance.

I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed your suite and the afternoon tea and treats. Our afternoon tea is typically served in the parlor, but with the decorating going on I did not want you to be inconvenienced, so I did a special tea service in your room each day during your stay.

While I cannot comment on the Cape May merchants or the Dodge's Market in Elmer, NJ that you mentioned, I do hope that you will give us and Cape May another try, as you will see that this is a great town, full of wonderful people!

Kind regards,
Patti

Our stay at The Mason Cottage was absolutely delightful. This B&B was exactly what we needed to celebrate our 5-yr wedding anniversary. The house was very warm and welcoming. We stayed in the Davis suite, which comes with a Jacuzzi and fireplace -- perfect for a romantic getaway. The robes and the bath amenities (especially the bath salts) added a nice touch to our stay.

We also took advantage of the reading room on the second floor. Here we discovered books (duh!), board games, and the Wii. There's also a pantry on the 1st floor that's always stocked with coffee and tea. The parlor provides for tea time and is stocked with an assortment of chocolates.

As nice as the house, our room, and all the amenities were, the innkeeper, Patti, made all the difference. She was so fun to talk to and really made us feel at home. We could never make it to tea time, so she would set aside a plate of her delicious cookies for us. Patti's breakfast was even more amazing. Our first morning there she made orange pecan pancakes with crispy bacon. The next morning she made 4-cheese quiche. We were in heaven! We will definitely choose The Mason Cottage for our next visit to Cape May.

We arrived too late to enjoy the afternoon tea, but were shown by the owner, Patti, how to use the snack bar area off the kitchen anytime. We loved our romantic Victorian room on the second floor, the Madison, and had a peaceful rest. It's a short 3 blocks walk to the shopping area and even shorter to see the ocean beachfront! Patti's morning breakfast of French toast was "out of this world" as the other couple staying conversed with us. Our peaks into other rooms not occupied was encouraged by the owner so we may choose another when we return. We wished we had more time to enjoy the ambience here, but easily found the ferry for crossing the Delaware Bay. This time of year it's easy to get around in the shops and find parking. Oh, and enjoy the chocolate she offers in the sitting room. We loved the malted milk balls...

Room Tip: Any room seems great. They each have their own rewards.

We lucked into great weather and a great B&B this October in Cape May. Just outside the town center and those insatiable Cape May parking meters and blocks from the beach, the Mason is in a great location. The Davis Room on the second floor overlooking the street is a two room suite with a fireplace and a private bath with jacuzzi. I cannot confirm that it is a working fireplace. It's gas, but I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. Perhaps if the weather was a little cooler, I would have bothered to ask. Quiet even with a full house and nicely furnished, the room comes with a closet reminiscent of the Victorian era to which the building dates, that is to say really, really small. Check in is at Tea Time, so arrivals are greeted with warm beverages and an assortment of cookies, baked goods and homemade chocolate. Bicycles are available to borrow and provide an ideal mode of transportation to work off the wonderful French toast served at breakfast. Overall, a clean, comfortable, charming place to stay.

We decided to re-visit the Cape May area and thought it might be fun to stay at the same place (but during a different time of year). Last year we were there during the summer, this time we stayed in the fall (October). If possible, the stay was even better than before. This time we stayed in the Madison Room (2nd floor). The room was very quiet (even though the Cottage was sold out), inviting and very clean. Our weekend just happen to coincide with Chocolate Week. What a treat!! Friday night was an over the top Chocolate Reception. Everything was made in house, and was all about chocolate. Patti (Outstanding Innkeeper), is not only a great cook but also a great Chocolatier. This is definetely one of those places that seem to keep getting better with time!!!! We will be back for a third visit.

Room Tip: We have had a room on the first floor and on the second floor. We thought they both were private an...

Husband and I did a two day getaway..last minute decision and found a $300 per night room at the Mason Cottage B&B.
Location is wonderful..just quiet enough but close to everything. B&B was fine..clean and a very nice front porch to watch people walk by.
The staff were pleasant..not really friendly..we never did figure out who was the operator and who were the workers..one very disappointing thing was that we were looking forward to the big, fabulous breakfast..had a very overdone quiche, pretty tasetless. Not what we expected.
