“A little disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2012

My husband surprised me with a weekend get away for my birthday! He booked The Mason Cottage. It was one of the few B&B's that we have never been to. We come to Cape May every fall or Christmastime. The inn was very cozy & nice but definately lacking "warmth" the innkeeper was "too herself" and although we were not mistreated by any means it was not a welcoming feel either. Which, honestly, is one of the reasons you stay at a B&B. (otherwise why not stay at a hotel like Congress Hall??) Anyway, we thought maybe it was just "us" but we had talked to other guests and they had a similar experience. The day we checked out we were waiting for the Halloween Parade to begin. It was at 3pm and we had an hour or so to kill so we went back to the Mason bc we had to pick up some leftovers (from all of our fabulous meals! The Washington Inn & Tisha's are winners!!!) We decided to have a cup of tea and read on the porch. ANY B&B that we have been to always encourages and welcomes you to hang around the next day before you leave. It was at this time that we both felt unwelcomed and when we said goodbye to Patti...all we got was "bye" ??? No "thank you for coming" or "come see us again" nothing, nada, zip. That was our last impression of The Mason Cottage and although when we first stepped thru the doorway we thought, this place has a lot of potential, it was very clean with nice rooms...we will not be back next year.

Thank you for your recent review. We certainly appreciate the feedback and are always looking to improve our service.

While we strive to achieve the ultimate B&B experience for all of our guests, we do have policies put in place for a reason. If at all possible, we are happy to accommodate folks outside of those policies, such as early check in and use of some of the amenities including the bikes after check out…Both of these, we are happy to say were made available to you and your husband to enjoy after your scheduled check out at 11am.

While we encourage our guests to enjoy the relaxing front porch, during a sellout weekend it does present a challenge when folks come back several hours after they have checked out to use the in house amenities available, such as the complimentary coffee and tea machine and our 3PM afternoon tea.

It is our hope that the afternoon tea is a relaxing and welcoming experience for all our guests where they are able to interact with other in house guests, ask the staff any questions they may have, or sit quietly to unwind from their day of travels.

We will certainly take your feedback to heart and wish you all the best to you.

Sincerely,

Patti

We stay at the Mason Cottage at least twice a year. And we go back for so many reasons. It is welcoming and comfortable and well furnished. We've stayed in the Grand Mason and Davis Suites and we decided on the way home that we like Davis best.

But the real secret of this wonderful B&B is Patti, Innkeeper Extraordinaire! She is what keeps us coming back. Whether it is making a dinner reservation or a wonderful spa treatment or making those hearty, delicous breakfasts or those fabulous brownies at tea time, she couldn't be more helpful, courteous, respectful and sweet. Her helper, Viola, is sweet too. You'll love the Mason Cottage - we do!

Room Tip: Try the Davis Suite.

We thoroughly enjoy the Mason Cottage in Cape May. The property is well maintained, room very clean, and the inkeeper very accessable and very accommodating. There was a book of restaurants and attractions in the area for you to review. The "trolley" stopped close to the property. Breakfast was delicious and it is not a continental. Even though you have to walk up one or two flights of steps to get to the rooms, the walk is worth it once you get into the room. Room was clean, well lighted, nice furniture.Walking to the beach and to the shopping area was a breeze. Bikes were also available on the property for guests use. Our room, the Davis Room, had a jacuzzi which was really nice.

Room Tip: Depends on whether or not you can walk up one or two flights of steps, and whether or not you want a...

My husband and I have stayed at many B & B's. The Mason Cottage is a very nice, slightly above average B & B. The location is ideal, being close to the beach and shopping at the Washington Street Mall. Our room was clean and had attractive furniture. The jacuzzi tub was a nice treat. Breakfast was ample, and tasty. It was helpful having free bikes, beach chairs and towels. Attention to minor details is what sets apart excellent B & B's and some of those things were lacking at the Mason Cottage. But overall, it is a very nice place to stay when visiting Cape May.

Room Tip: No pool or fitness center, but n/a not available on Tripadvisor. Decatur Room was comfortable and s...

This was our first stay in Cape May and our choice of the Mason Cottage was a wonderful experience. Location , atmosphere, accommodations and the innkeeper, Patty, all combined to make the experience a wonderful one. Having those scrumptous breakfasts on the veranda in the most amazing weather made it difficult to return to "the real world". Hope to make another trip in the near future.

Room Tip: Ware Room is on the 2nd floor, front where the morning sun awakens you to a view of the beach only a...

I loved my weekend stay at The Mason Cottage. Patti was warm and welcoming, breakfasts were fantastic, my room was darling (though a 2 story walk up, so bring your luggage in several small pieces rather than in 1 large heavy suitcase).
There are bicycles to borrow (of high quality), sand chairs that recline flat to borrow (also of high quality), and beach towels.
I had to park about 1/4 mile away, but I didn't touch my car until I left Cape May, so the parking challenge presented itself only once.
I hadn't realized that one had to pay to go on the beach--cash only. So, I bought a 3 consecutive-day pass for $10. What's nice is that there are clean bathrooms one can use along the concrete boardwalk, so that makes the fee worthwhile.

My wife an I had never been to Cape May nor stayed at a bed and breakfast and decided to do so for our anniversary. We stayed at Mason Cottage for two nights and it was wonderful. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The innkeeper, Patti, couldn't have been more friendly and the breakfasts that she made were inventive and amazing. The location was central for both the beach and main area of town. We would definitely recommend Mason Cottage and plan to return in the future.
