“the female owner intrudes on your privacy”
Reviewed 22 April 2008

berny is absolutely intrusive from the minute you arrive, constantly knocking at the door, leaving you notes about what you need to do there like clean up and haul out trash and don't use the coffee and micro together because then you get the power shut off...also you can't even start your day as she is right on the deck as soon as you step outside to talk to you while you are trying to get to the beach. She asked us to cook her a meal while there and then proceeded to yell at us because the stove wasn't spotless and when i said there wasn't a lot of cleaners under the sink she yelled at me and tild me i should have asked for some. the night before we left she told us to take our time to leave in the am and then when we did (leaving 11:30am as opposed to 11:00AM she literally threw us out and started to scream and cry about how she still had all these rooms to clean and no time to do it and how we had not left the place spotless for her and on and on.... we were so distraught after a week stay in this lovely town that it soured our vacation when she reacted like this and we both knew we would never take rooms there again...please don't make a mistake to stay with these people as cape may has many other fine choices without being insulted

We just got back from our first visit to Cape May, NJ and it is a truly wonderful place. But warning - if you stay at the Thomas Webster House - you can expect to have your beach memories marred by a message on your answering machine upon arrival back home. Eventhough you have hauled the garbage down 3 flights of stairs, cleaned out the refrigerator and hand washed all dishes (no dishwasher), you will receive a nasty call that the sink (malfunctioning garbage disposal) and stove were not cleaned "up to par" and the girl that works for them complained that the kitchen floor needed cleaning. IMAGINE! A check for $550 for 2 nights on a 3rd floor rental, several blocks from the beach and the proprietor has the nerve to call us and say we had dissappointed her! This after many "friendly reminder" notes left all around the place about closing windows, being quiet, hauling garbage, and washing all sand off your feet before entering "her house." P-L-E-A-S-E! Do not stay here - this woman wants to live in a private residence at the beach, not run a business.
P.S. No paper towels, no box of tissues and we had to ask for an extra roll of toilet paper .
P.P.S. Harry - the gardens are beautiful!

Pros - The place is very charming and inspires a quaint, cozy feeling. It definitely has more charm and character than a hotel room. It is also within walking distance from the beach (about 7 blocks).

Cons - The beds are very small and the mattresses very old and noisy. Two people will certainly have a hard time sleeping together (my wife and I both weigh less than 170lb and we had a hard time turning around without waking each other up). The house is also right next a pretty busy street, so expect some noise at night.

For my wife and I, however, the worst part of the trip was a message left on our answering machine by the The Thomas Webster House's owner, Berny. She, in a very rude tone, said we didn't clean the stove and sink properly before we left.

That confused me: we paid $275 a night to stay at her inn and did all the dishes before we left (I thought I was being a nice guy by doing so). I probably didn't leave the place spotless, but we shouldn't be required to do so. Can you imagine getting a call from the Marriott saying you didn't make your bed before leaving the room?

The fact that the owner of the establishment seemed annoyed to have to further clean a sink makes me think they don't really clean the place between guests. And now that I think of it, they don't have maids. Do they wash the sheets between guests? Do they replace the towels? I am afraid they might not since a couple of specs on the sink and stoved distressed them so much.
