Got a Huge King room with a fabulous mattress. The linens were fabulous. The grounds are large and great to walk through.. I am a plant person and the variety of plants were great. Lets see.. the front desk staff were super friendly when we checked in early and got us to our room quickly. There was a delicious breakfast . I had a shrimp eggs benedict which was super. all in all I loved it and the fact that it had on sight parking was great

Cape May is a beautiful place and, don't me wrong, the Southern Mansion is beautiful, but if you are going to spend money on a place to stay, don't spend it there. Visit the tour, but don't sleep there. I've been to many B & Bs and the service is not that great. They don't have afternoon tea, they don't have any hot drinks in the evening. They give you only the bare minimum as far as toiletries. The staff was very nice, but it feels as if they don't take pride in the place. There is nothing real " authentically victorian" or " southern" about it. It's also a little ways from the beach. If you want to get a real feel of Cape May, stay at one of the B & Bs near the water.....

The Southern Mansion is a beautiful victorian inn, but we experienced significant services issues with the front desk, housekeeping and the waitstaff at breakfast. Since you pay for your entire stay upfront at checkin, there was little motivation for anyone to resolve our issues. Their entire staff needs to be trained on how to be customer focused.

We were impressed by their website and NYT reviews of "the place to stay in Cape May," We were looking for upscale and special.. What we got was fine....but, honestly, there are better places to stay in Cape May when you consider the price. The building and the grounds were lovely -- the staff was friendly and very welcoming. But, the decor is a bit grandmom'ish and really for what you pay the amenities are bare bones. We were also turned off but the really mediocre breakfast -- VERY greasy omelets and no fresh fruit, etc. If you LOVE the Victorian bed and breakfast experience you might disagree. But if you are a sophisticated traveler you'll soon realize the place is resting on old laurels and an out dated concept that they haven't managed to keep fresh.

My husband and I stayed here over Memorial Day weekend.
Pros: Beautiful grounds, we enjoyed a bottle of wine on a swing in the garden and it was very relaxing. Breakfast was amazing half continental and half served. There were pastries, juice, water and coffee served continental style and then the waitress gave you a menu with four choices the morning of our stay it was a crab omelet, make your own omelet, waffles and any kind of eggs. The breakfast was excellent. The room and bathroom were huge; the bathroom had a lot of natural light.
Cons: The Southern Mansion is farther from the beach than we like. It felt like a hike to get down to the beach with chairs and towels and back. The rooms do not have a fridge, while I understand the Victorian elegance theme going, the rooms have air conditioning so add a small fridge. A large number of the restaurants in Cape May are BYO and sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy a bottle of wine on the ground as we did (clever packing with lots of ice). The air conditioning was incredibly loud so every time it clicked in or off all night it woke us up, then after the ac would click off a pipe would clink for a while after. There was no “other” guest noise but the room made enough noise to keep us up most of the night.
Overall I’m not upset I stayed at this hotel, I don’t think I would again.

My son's wedding at the mansion is the reason my husband and I chose to stay at this beautiful inn for 2 nights ... good choice! We were in room #25, top floor with private balcony. Our king bed had a new mattress ... absolutely heavenly! Be sure to ask for a room with new bedding, as some are quite old and somewhat lumpy. The tvs are also old with poor cable service, but not something to be concerned about when staying at a B & B, as most have none at all. The breakfast is wonderful, so be sure to get there within the alloted time or you'll miss out on a great meal and excellent service. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the inn is on Washington, just a couple of blocks from great restaurants and shopping. If you sense an uninvited guest in the middle of the night, you're not alone ... a friendly female ghost seemed to mill about in our room, probably looking for a lost love. Spooky!!!
