“Good location, but not a five star B&B”
Reviewed 30 September 2013 via mobile

Nice B&B, but not a five star B&B. The location is excellent and the quaint atmosphere was inviting . On the down side, the bed was lumpy and soft, the bathroom is dated and cheaply renovated (circa1970). Breakfast is served at a hard time, with no variety. The quality of the food was fine, but not at a caliber of a better B&B. Owner seems inflexible and somewhat over confident about the demand for his B&B . Generally disappointed based on prior rave reviews.

All the probflems stated in this review boil down to possibly one implied, but not directly stated, guest issue that the inn could not fully accommodate. It was referred to as "owner seems in-flexible" in the guest review. The stay in question was only 1 night with an early checkin of 12 noon requested and granted.
The issue developed when, at the last minute after breakfast, the wife requested a late checkout with the husband gone and his plans already in effect for the entire morning. The inn's checkout time is 11AM and a compromise was made to extend that time to 11:45AM. As a small 4 room inn, we do not offer late checkouts nor on the rare occasion that one is needed and is possible for us to provide, we do not charge for it ( which is sometimes practiced here in Cape May). When the husband returned to the inn at 11:50AM, the couple left in a frenzy and upset at the difficult situation.
To summarize, we feel the negative tone of this review was based on guest assumptions that larger accommodations may have been able to provide (while a small inn of only 4 rooms like The Saltwood House would not be able to) based on their other Tripadvisor reviews. These assumptions, as to what was expected, include a large variety of food at breakfast, expansive serving hours for breakfast and flexible late checkout times.
The Saltwood House was a disappointment for this reviewer, but on the other hand, if you like to eat breakfast at 9AM which is homestyle quality and variety, rather prefer a Sealy pillow top mattress purchased new in 2012, think that onsite parking is a real plus for a B&B in downtown Cape May, have no problem with a new built bathroom from the 1990s, understand when checkout time is and how important it is to the running of a small inn, then maybe our B&B is for you.

Cape May is a beautiful town and The Saltwod House is our favorite Bed and Breakfast in that town. Don has welcomed us back for the the last , probably, 15 years.Erik works for Don and he will do anything for you. His personality is one that people can just warm up to. The onsite parking is great, you don't have to worry about where to park.Once you park your car everything is within walking distance. We love all the antiques throughout the beautiful house. We have stayed in every room, but our favorite one is The Newport Suite. It has a bedroom , sitting room and bath, decorated beautifully. Don's breakfasts are a special treat every morning . It is always fun to come down in the morning and have a cup of coffee on the porch and talk with the other guests. We all have some funny stories to tell some times. It is just a warm and friendly place to stay. Wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. Thank you Don and Erik for making our vacations fun.

Room Tip: Newport has a large bedroom and also a living room . Very nice room if you want more than just a be...

My wife and I just returned from a enchanting cruise down the Rhine River. However, at its conclusion we were exhausted from all the sightseeing. When we returned home to Pennsylvania we realized we had scheduled our yearly visit to Cape May for the following week. It turned out to be just what the Doctor ordered. We had a wonderful stay at the Saltwood House. Don and Eric are the best of hosts; they are there when you need them, but out of the way when you need your down time. We have stayed at several bed and breakfasts around the world and this one is tops in our book. A different delicious breakfast every morning coupled with enjoyable conversation from guests from as far away as Europe. The house is sparkling clean and loaded with interesting antiques. Both Don and Eric are a wealth of information on sights to see as well as the best places to eat. We were able to walk a half block to the beach and soak up the sun while lounging in the beach chairs provided by the Saltwood. Of course it would not be Cape May without shopping. The Inn is located a half block from the outdoor shopping Mall which my wife thoroughly enjoyed. I spent a couple of hours on the porch sipping lemon chello and snacking on cheese. My only regret is that Don will not sell me the portrait of Catherine, the original owner, whose beautiful Victorian portrait graces the wall of the stairs leading to the upper floors. We have already booked for next year.

This was our first stay at the Saltwood House. We rented the top floor suite and it was excellent for me, my wife, and out teen-aged girls. The location of this B&B is perfect... a half block to the beach in one direction and a half block to Washington Ave with shops and restaurants in the other. Erik and Don were super hosts and the breakfasts were tasty every morning. Beach chair and beach towel loaners are nice touch along with a dedicated parking spot. We've already signed up for a return trip next summer.

My husband & I have been returning to the Saltwood House for almost 20 years. There's no better place to stay in Cape May. The home is beautiful, spotless, and the perfect location for a visit in Cape May. We have met some very nice people there over the years and Don & Erik will do everything they can so you enjoy your visit, they are like family now. And the breakfast is always something to look forward to. We look forward to our next visit.

My husband and I have just stayed at the Saltwood House for the third straight year and had another beautiful vacation. We have been coming to Cape May for 20 years and have stayed in many different places. Saltwood is our favorite and we feel no need to look any further. The location is A+, the hosts are great, and we love our suite. Don always makes a delicious breakfast, keeps the house immaculate, and has many antiques, pictures, and artifacts that are fun to look at. The house is smaller than many other B & B's and offers a level of intimacy not available at larger places.

Room Tip: The house offers regular rooms and suites. We always chose the same suite as we enjoy having the li...

My partner and I just stayed at the Saltwood for the 4th year in a row - since finding this gem we book the same week in August every year. Last year AND this year we added another day to our stay… we figure that by the time we are 90 we’ll live at the Saltwood! We keep coming back for Don and Erik’s gracious hospitality, the DELICIOUS breakfasts, the cleanliness, the proximity to “everything fun” like the beach and shopping. This year we had a special unexpected treat… a celebrity sighting! No names to be dropped, but a well known actress appeared at our breakfast table one morning and entertained us with her stories. There’s no other place in Cape May I’d consider staying at!
