“Wonderful stay!”
Reviewed 19 November 2012

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the Victorian Lace Inn on Veterans Day. The staff was genuinely enthusiastic and welcoming. We felt as if we were coming to visit friends. The inn is beautifully decorated without being overly fussy and it is spotlessly clean. Our third floor suite (Wickoff?) was very spacious with a king-sized bedroom, sitting room and small kitchen area. We had a view of the ocean from the bedroom which was lovely as the Inn is located only one short block from the beach. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversations with the other guests. Carrie, the owner also stopped by and greeted everyone at the table. Of course we had the most perfect weather that weekend which added to our overall wonderful experience. If you have never been to Cape May, you must treat yourself to a unique and beautiful shore town. For those of you who already know and love this place, try the Victorian Lace Inn. You will NOT be disappointed. We are already looking forward to making a return visit in the spring.

My wife & I visited Cape May a few weeks before Storm Sandy and stayed at the Victorian Lace Inn. We had a lovely stay. the innkeeper, whose name I am embarrasses to admit i forgot, welcomed us on Friday and set the mood for a nice couples weekend away. The owners were also at the property and they were very nice. Our Suite, the Kerry Suite, was very generous in size and comfort. Even when we had a problem with the gas fireplace, the staff did a great job of accommodating our request. Breakfast was delicious both mornings and the afternoon tea and homemade cookies were a welcome treat. I would definitely recommend you stay at this lovely inn.

Looking at the overwhelmingly excellent reviews, perhaps our expectations of the Victorian Lace were too high. Starting with the good--The hospitality was warm and welcoming, the breakfast was very good, and the location was ideal. The staff really was very warm and friendly. We try to be low maintenance, but our small requests were promptly and efficiently handled. The location is very close to the beach, with no metered parking out front. We stayed in the Leitrim suite; it's quite large, with two fireplaces (one not working; no big deal), a kitchen and living room area, a private balcony with a view of the water, bathroom and bedroom with a very large bed. To be honest, it was probably too much room for us, but we were looking for the private balcony, which was indeed very nice.

So what was not perfect? It seemed that architectural and design choices were our biggest head scratcher. The Leitrim suite was divided in such an odd way that it was awkward to move in and out of the bedroom, which was mostly blocked by the bed. The living room had a nice view of the ocean and a nice fireplace, but neither was highlighted by the furniture arrangement. In short, the Feng shui of the space was all wrong. The kitchen was similar to a kitchenette in an inexpensive beach motel, which took away from the Victorian ambiance. The shower was tiny and plastic. One small housekeeping issue: although the towels were replaced during our stay, the tissue, toilet tissue and paper towels were on their last spin around the tube. It's no problem to replace them ourselves (readily available under the sink), but why attend to the towels and not the toiletries? In this era of water conservation, most hotels and B&B's expect you to use the same towels during your stay anyway. It's just a small thing, but small things count.

Our biggest issue was with the central air conditioning. It's just a poor design. The system is too dependent on closed windows to operate. There should be some damper control or a separate thermostat for the rooms so that a visitor can open the window, particularly in the cool ocean air. After all, why visit in the fall if you can't feel the ocean air? Perhaps it would be expensive to fix. If you like air conditioning (particularly in the heat of summer) then this should be no problem for you.

Back to the good~ the fresh cookies were a welcome touch, and the porch was relaxing and quiet. So, we should emphasize that overall our stay was wonderful. But to be Excellent? For the value, we think it missed by a little bit.

Room Tip: If you like the real B&B experience and you're a couple, you probably don't need the Lei...

We have been going to Cape May for the past 25 years and about 17 years ago found the Victorian Lace Inn and have been staying there ever since. The Inn is beautiful both inside and out. I love the wrap around porch where a delicious breakfast is served every morning. Innkeepers, Andy and Carrie, go out of their way to make sure your visit there is perfect. The location is great, only a block from the ocean and a short walk to the shops and restaurants. We have come to feel like it is our second home and I cannot imagine staying anywhere else. If you are planning a trip to Cape May, check it out. You will not be disappointed.

My wife and I have been vacationing in Cape May ever since we met years ago. I surprised her one year by booking us at the Victorian Lace for our anniversary. We've been going there ever since and look forward to our stay every fall for 2 weeks of quiet peace, warmth and beauty. Never have we been treated so kindly. We've grown so fond of everyone at the Inn. The Innkeepers (Andy and Carrie) are wonderful. And Nicole is a gem. Brandy was a welcome addition to the staff this year and a perfect fit. Everyone goes out of their way to make sure we have everything we need while staying there. We love staying in the "Leitrim suite" with a big private deck that looks out over the ocean. Thank-you Andy and Carrie for your beautiful Inn! We will forever be your returning guests!

From the outside the inn is a typical Cape May ''gingerbread house'' - its charming, colourful and old fashioned. However, the inside is less appealing to say the least. Old furniture and bizarre ornaments fill this freezing air-conditioned sealed inn. You cannot escape the cold as the windows are sealed shut from the inside. The smell of fried food is therefore also kept in and never leaves the rooms or the surrounding spaces of this small house. On a more positive note, the bedrooms were only decent-looking but extremely clean and the breakfast was good. It had an optimal position as it was only a 2-minute walk to the beach and the main street.

We are disappointed in your review of our Inn. Hopefully folks that are interested in staying here will read the excellent reviews of others who have stayed with us (particularly the reviews from August, the month when you were here with us.) In response to your comments regarding temperature, the Inn is on a central climate control system and therefore we ask that guests do not open windows in the heat of the summer as it will negatively impact the temperature throughout the Inn. And the windows are NOT SEALED either from the outside or the inside as this would be a fire hazard and against code. I recall your visit and that your daughter was not able to sleep in an air conditioned environment. We did provide extra blankets to accommodate her but unfortunately that did not satisfy her. As I am sure you understand, we could not turn the air conditioning system off in the heat of August with a houseful of other guests who were very happy to have it on. I suspect that the "smell of fried food" you refer to may be experienced in the early morning when we are preparing breakfast but I would like to make note that our breakfasts do not consist of fried food. Even the bacon is baked so that it does not come out greasy. And of course in late morning or early afternoon, our guests enjoy the aroma of homemade cookies and cakes being baked for afternoon refreshments.
Again I am sorry that Victorian Lace did not meet your expectations. Hopefully you enjoyed Cape May and the "not to miss" sights we chatted with you about. And we do hope you enjoyed your trip to Costa Rica before returning home to Italy.

My husband and I have spent several wonderful vacations at the Victorian Lace Inn in Cape May, NJ. This year we stayed in the Cork Suite, which was fabulous!! Many thanks to Carrie and Andy for making every stay at the Inn so special. Everyone at the Inn is so friendly and hospitable that we feel like the Inn is our "home away from home" in Cape May. We have to say that every breakfast is delicious (and, of course, the afternoon cookies!) and we love meeting other guests on the beautiful Inn porch. We look forward to our next visit to Cape May and our next stay at the Victorian Lace!
