“What a great time in Cape May!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2010

This is our sixth or seventh time to visit Cape May and each time we stayed at the Heritage Inn; we request the third floor for the great view of the ocean, especially from the porch. The Inn is very convenient to the beach (just cross the street!) and all the best shopping & restaurants are within walking distance. We usually have breakfast in the room (We bring a coffee pot!) lunch on the beach (packed from items we store in the room refrig or reheat in the room microwave) and after-dinner wine on the roof-top deck. The parking in the back lot is about 1/2 block away and behind the building next door and can be inconvenient with luggage, especially in the rain. However there's a convenient front lot for about 4 cars (plus 1 for handicapped) and a load/unload temporary spot or two.

The room was very dark, dingy, and smelled of mildew (in fact I had to wash an xtra blanked from home because it reeked of mildew). The mattresses were rock hard and necessitated a visit to the chiropractor upon returning. The first floor corner was very noisy at night so we had to crank up the AC just to drown it out. The "efficiency" consisted of meager cookware, no dish drying rack and one thread-bear dish towel. The bathroom was a 1950's mess with hardly any light and a fan that made noise but did not defog the mirror. The pool is basically a large bathtub. On the plus side: great location across from the promenade and walking distance to everything. Nice roof deck. The 2 boys at the desk were both very nice. Fortunately our trip was only a few days long and we had limited time in the room. Stay somewhere else!!

The sole reason I joined Yelp is to write a review for The Heritage Inn. I have traveled around the world, stayed in hostels in the red light district in New Amsterdam, and this hotel was by far the worst lodging experience I have ever encountered... and we were only there for an hour!

The old lady at the desk and her daughter were very rude and uninviting. As soon as we arrived we went to check in and it was taking the lady at the desk such a long time we had to ask if we could run into the room to use the bathroom. The room smelled like mildew, and was gross and dank. We then went back to the front desk to finish checking in. When we made the reservation we were told that they didn't accept Amex, then when we were checking in we saw the person in front of us pay with an Amex. We asked about this and the lady acted like she didn't know what we were talking about and wasn't sure how to run the card. She then proceeded to take a telephone call and told us the card wouldn't run while she was on the phone. She stayed and chatted on the phone for about 15 minutes while we stood there waiting to check in. She then yelled at us for being "impatient" and wanting her to let us check in.

We decided to head next door to the Macomber Hotel to see if there were rooms available there. Thank goodness there was. It was $100 less expensive for a two bed room rather than the one bed room we had at the Heritage, the receptionist was pleasant and accomodating, and the room was lovely.

When we went back to Heritage they refused to cancel our reservation, and they were going to charge the card anyway. We could not possibly saty there because it would have ruined our weekend, so we left with the hope that we could contest the charge. We contested the charge and won!

The moral of the story is, beware of the Heritage Inn! Go anywhere else, just stay away from this awful place!

The truth behind this review is that the young girl in question was trying to put a 3rd young adult in a room that had been reserved for 2 persons ONLY which she has failed to mention. Hence the comment she wrote about the other motel having 2 double beds verses the Heritage only having 1 king bed in the room. When the woman at the front desk confronted her about the 3rd person this young girl berated the desk clerk, flew into a rage and stormed out.shouting threats of retallition. Several other guests witnessed this tyraid and offered support and kindness to the older woman at the desk. Perhaps the "moral" of this review is "honesty is the best policy".
Thank you,

We have been staying at the Heritage for many years. It is the most economical hotel located on Beach Avenue that is centrally located- a stone's throw to the beach, restaurants and shops. It is family owned and we have found the owners to be friendly and responsive to our wants. The rooms are a decent size and have always been very clean. There is also a pool which came in very handy this year with our 2 yr. old granddaughter. I would recommend this without hesitation or exception.

Our stay (with young children) resulted in a police escort out of the hotel--for our safety. We still tell the story about the night the owner's family member and friends ruined our and other guest's vacation. The questionable ratings for this hotel are spot on. We experienced them all, plus.

Stayed here one time in our 30+ years visiting CM and this is the only poor experience we've ever had.

Beach view was nice! LOVE CM!

We would like to question the validity of this review as there have been no incidents involving any type of "police" involvement at the Heritage Inn. We believe this review to be erroneous, perhaps a different establishment. We have been the owners/operators of the Heritage Inn for the past 38 years operating a family friendly motel with a wonderful repeat clientel.

The Heritage is my favorite place to stay in Cape May! I have three children that range in age from 2 to 15. The location of the hotel couldnt be more convenient! The staff is wonderful and extremly helpful! I recently stayed and asked if it were possible to get a connecting room so we could spread out a bit more. They worked their magic and got us another room (off season, of course, so it was available!) for a great rate. The pool is great, and never seems to get too crowded, even in peak season. My husband and I go there alone for our anniversary whenever we can in October, and I try to take my children every summer for a few days.

We recently stayed at the Heritage Inn for three nights. It is a great location for beach access. The pool was nice and clean, as were the rooms. Staff was very helpful and friendly. This is a good place to stay for families.
